Been lucky with Sandy boys recently

3 are going to be in our area of the draft

Ollie Murphy - 200cm defender
Charle Edwards - 191cm midfielder
Harvey Johston - 185cm midfielder

I think being a local is although not necessarily that important it is nice

I would be very happy with that haul

A better strategy/option than bringing in foreigners who grew up playing a different code.

Tell that to Zack Tuohy's face

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

It is an EXTRA option.

The main draft is also better than the rookie draft or SSP, but neither should be ignored just because the National Draft has a higher chance of success.

There a number of premiership players who were foreigners who grew up playing a different code.

Plus players like Stynes who went ok.

And again this is an extra option.

Yeah ok.

I’ll also tell him those highly speculative project player types seem to work at rich successful flag winning clubs…even then it’s not as though it’s fertile ground….our club…not so much.

You wouldn’t call an incredibly small number of players a fertile success story, and as I say those types of recruits only seem to work at rich successful clubs…us not so much.

Again, this is an extra option. I already stated that it was less likely.

The Dees were not that flash when Stynes and White arrived there.

Wild idea I know, but maybe to become successful our Club has to lift its game in ALL areas.

That would be nice and it sounds like a marvellous thing to say but they are just words and I’m sure you understand and accept the skepticism.

There’s a long way to go before we will know if the club has turned a corner after its 150 year track record.

All of our recruiting should consist of high percentage decisions and maybe we should first prove we can recruit locals successfully before poking around the sporting fields on the other side of the globe.

Why any genuine St Kilda supporter would rubbish the club trialling a young Gaelic footballer from Ireland is crazy.

Liam O'Connell has been signed as a category B rookie so it's not as though he will be competing for a spot in the seniors until well after he's proven that he has all of the footy skills and athletic talent to make it in the AFL.

Almost every AFL club, rich or poor, scans for talent in Gaelic football, it has nothing to do in any shape or form with a club's financial situation.

It's true that only very few Gaelic footballers have become successful playing in the AFL, but the few that have and do make the endeavour very worthwhile.

"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

Is this factual?

How many clubs can you list that do so?

Factual or not. The average for Irishman who have debuted is about 60, which equates to a free pick between 21 and 30.

Two non-factual claims don't make a factual claim.

26 Irish players have debuted.
They have amassed 1643 games @ 63 ave.
That compares to pick 21-30.

For anyone interested in the facts of Gaelic footballers playing in the AFL, the full history can be read on Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_exp ... _football)

It reveals that almost every AFL club has either recruited players from Ireland or toyed with the idea.

It includes a reference by one of the game's most honoured players and coach of all time:

"Ron Barassi, drawing comparisons between Australian rules football and Gaelic football was of the opinion that Gaelic Footballers could provide a previously untapped pool of potential Australian Rules players."

But no doubt there will be some non-believers, one in particular on this forum, who will continue to argue that St Kilda recruiting Liam O'Connell is a dumb move...
