Like the prerace going to the barrier chatter at Flemington. The commentators manage to mention every horse up to the 20/1 shots so its hard not to mention the eventual winner, but they are not rich from punting. We are in the hands of Eagles, North and all others who sailed below us. May their judgements continue to be crap.

St Kilda

Picks: 13, 21, 40, 77, 82, 86 (likely to use four or five selections)

It will be a wait and see who gets through to St Kilda's third pick after their two early selections but they have been looking to move up the board and are expected to trade a future third-round pick for Melbourne's pick 42. They will then likely turn that pick, plus 40, into Gold Coast's pick 27, handing the Saints three top-30 selections.
So, given we need (good) midfielders like oxygen - why are we looking to trade away a future 3rd (in next year's midfielder-rich draft) to get earlier access in this year's draft which is widely viewed as patchy at best outside the top 10?

Am I missing something?

Moir was apparently rated a top 5 prospect before developing a hip issue or bursitis?
Might be worth a punt if he slides to pick 40, or pick 27 (if we trade up our pick 40)?

So if next year is a midfield rich draft this one is a big man draft so lets get 2 bigs with this draft early there are some really good bigs in the first 25 and look at a midfield later in the draft and next years draft when there are not many bigs available.

My point is that we've already traded away our 2024 2nd rnd pick so, if we trade our 2024 3rd rnd pick as well tonight ... we'll be very thin in draft capital next year

Fair point but they can always trade back in next season.

I presume that they have someone in mind who may not last until our next pick that they are keen on, so will make the trade if that person is still on the board when it gets to gold coasts pick. They also probably suspect that those later round picks are pretty easy to obtain in trades each year, we have Melbourne's third round pick next year from the Billings trade so are willing to part with one pick to get someone in now.

When people say this is a strong /weak draft for midfielders / forwards / defenders / rucks does anyone come back five or 10 years later to check that?

18 year olds are playing against other 18 year olds and it's a pretty inexact science picking how one player will play in the AFL and I reckon it's a very inexact science trying to do it for a whole cohort and talking about next year being strong or weak for certain types is just ridiculous.

I seem to recall Hugh Goddard being touted as the likely number 1 pick early in his draft year.

What am I trying to say? Don't bother trying to trade in or out of a particular draft year because of perceived strengths or weaknesses of the cohort.

To add to this…

There’s a certain forest from the trees thing that goes on with supporters from time to time.

The goal is not to get the highest number of top picks in the strongest draft - yes that could help us in terms of probability to land a good player… but the actual goal is to snag an elite player. If we get another Jack Sinclair off the rookie list, that makes this draft a success. If they have someone in mind that could be it… then go for it.

They can always trade back in next year if they want to.

This year's group of players have been harder to assess because of the disruptions they faced during the Covid lockdowns. They just haven't played as much football as they otherwise would have. There are bound to be some real gems outside the top 15. It just needs a keen eye to spot them. Chris Toce will be earning his money tonight!

You must nail your first picks though!!!!

Do that you win premierships

What I don’t want to fkn hear

Is we pick someone who is rated to go way later in the draft but we had him rated higher on our board!

Like Matthew Allison (who) at pick 26

I like it when we select the right obvious
If it looks like a duck… it’s probably a duck

In order
Players I like
Darcy Wilson
Molten Tholstrup
Harry DeMattia
Charlie Edwards
Riley Hardemann

One thing that is certain is that in 4 year's time, 30% of tonight's drafted players will have been cut, and in 5 year's time in excess of 40% will be have been cut.

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

If you look at the actual draft against the phantom drafts, 5 years after the draft. I don't think the phantom drafts do that well.

Anyone got a 2018 phantom draft list?

If Norf win 3 games next season will they be eligible for more draft concessions?

Well precedent has been set, although another crap season might mean 3 is not enough. AFL would not become arbitrary just to try to get one side an advantage, surely all children are equal. Then there is always the umpiring lever if it gets dire.

Leake not yet picked. If he slips i'd be keen.

edit; just had a look at his profile - we don't need any 187cm utilities, unless we can play him through the mid.
