Saints-Zebras affiliation revamped

Not sure about the guaranteed rookie spot, seen a lot of Sandy over the few years and there's not a lot to get excited about in their ranks. Maybe Milney's boy?

Re: Saints-Zebras affiliation revamped
I like that the club is leaning into this.
Reality is that it’s in our interest to have a strong and vibrant Sandy team/culture. It’s a good club linked strongly to us and fits in strategically with our club identity as the Bayside club.
Can’t keep treating them as a lesser saints reserves.
Need to make it work

So the brains trust is happy to have our 'seconds' team running around in ugly Hawks colours
A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

I think it is a good move that could help all parties. Juniors overlooked in the draft have an incentive to choose Sandy as a VFL club, Sandy get more talent in the door, Saints get a closer look at potential talent and how they may blossom or struggle in the club environment.

You could only dislike this initiative if you're incredibly short sighted.

Interesting that Sandy are appointing a Recruiting Manager. Who was doing the recruiting previously?

"As part of St Kilda’s existing affiliation with Sandringham, non-selected players are eligible to play from the Zebras in the VFL competition."
I thought we already did this. "from" should be "with"?

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

We do, it is stating the existing arrangement. Pretty clumsily worded though.Jacks Back wrote: ↑Thu 26 Oct 2023 9:30pm "As part of St Kilda’s existing affiliation with Sandringham, non-selected players are eligible to play from the Zebras in the VFL competition."

Re: Saints-Zebras affiliation revamped
Hawks have done it well... people going to Box Hill know they are a chance to get picked up by Hawks, so good players go there... they then have a successful side and also produce players like Newman.nostalgicsaint wrote: ↑Thu 26 Oct 2023 6:50pmamusingname wrote: ↑Thu 26 Oct 2023 6:47pm I think it is a good move that could help all parties. Every time a Sandy player trained with Saints in the summer, they did not get put on the list... so why would a good player with ambitions to play AFL chose Sandy over Box Hill?
Geelomg and Bulldogs also seem to try to bring talent through their VFL sides.
So.. seems a good initiative to me

Re: Saints-Zebras affiliation revamped
When are they going to become the Sandringham Saints?
When are they going to wear Red, White, and Black?
Why are we the only team to have a VFL alignment where the aligned club still looks and sounds like an old VFA team?
Every other club either has a deidicated reserves team, or the aligned team is AFL branded...Box Hill Hawks, Casey Demons...Both changed from the Mustangs and Scorpions to wholly align themselves.
It's time for the Zebras to become the Saints!

That's their traditional colours. Not sure why you need to say that.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Thu 26 Oct 2023 4:49pm So the brains trust is happy to have our 'seconds' team running around in ugly Hawks colours
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Re: Saints-Zebras affiliation revamped
The Bayside area in Melbourne has probably the richest supply of football talent in Australia. See Sandy Dragons, Brighton Grammar, Beaumaris FC etc. why don’t we capitalise on this a lot more.

Re: Saints-Zebras affiliation revamped
But they're our 2nds team. I'm not sure the Zebras would be around in the VFL if not for our alignment.magnifisaint wrote: ↑Sat 28 Oct 2023 1:01pmThat's their traditional colours. Springvale and Box Hill had to suck it up and have a name change.
It's about time they became the Sandringham Saints and wore our colours...Or at least our WWI colours if you want to replace the white with yellow.
And, for the record, Sandringham wear gold, black, and blue...Not brown. So no Hawks colurs.

Does it matter a fk what colours they are wearing?!
Would they play or develop better in another jumper??
The only people obsessed with jumpers are fans

Re: Saints-Zebras affiliation revamped
So I guess all that previous propaganda about getting our own St Kilda VFL Team paying out of Moorabbin is now dead and buried yeah? The biggest issue with the Sandy alliance is having to play at Beach Rd. It's a very small ground with a fair to middling surface and is almost unplayable on some of those galeforce windy days. It's not at all suitable to developing AFL talent (the ground size and conditions don't really compare to AFL venues)
Go you red, black & white warriors

Re: Saints-Zebras affiliation revamped
Our reserves shouldn't play there at all. It's like playing matches in Tottori. Our home games should be at Moorabbin, or a curtain raiser at Docklands or the G.Saintmatt wrote: ↑Mon 30 Oct 2023 12:36pm So I guess all that previous propaganda about getting our own St Kilda VFL Team paying out of Moorabbin is now dead and buried yeah? I'm wearing black today as I'm in mourning after this news.

Re: Saints-Zebras affiliation revamped
St Kilda and Sandy feel like cousins to me. Including the clashing colours. Not that I wouldn't disagree that a reserves team in red, white and black would be good. I do. I wish we could have both!
Memories of Saints players in Zeb colours on a Sunday at Beach Oval. Rex Hunt!
And it was fun down there being with my mates, who were mostly Richmond at the time, but we all liked the Zebs.
does anyone remember going to a game between the St Kilda reserves and Sandy one year? Or am I dreaming? I think there was one, and I think I was there!
