better question might be why did only one team want billings and half his salary? hmm.

Pity this thread drifted into the negative, once again, when all Tony was doing was highlighting a positive ie some players training at the club during their off season and in particular the very good news that one of those players was Tim Membrey.

Just in case you have waded through the thread this far Tony.

Thanks heaps for the info, it's appreciated and I guessed Jack wasn't needed after he demonstrated he wasn't 100% committed enough to do what is required for our endeavour of success and I am elated that Skunk was training.

Reckon the 4 year extension would’ve been a trade off to get his money reduced…was probably on 700-750K previously

With all due respect (or none of it in this case) … were you dropped on the head as a child? More than once?

I don’t think anyone particularly likes their club paying players to play elsewhere however, it’s become a bit of a necessary evil.

In any case, can I please get your take on Collingwood paying >$1M in total this season for Treloar and Grundy to not play for them?

Just cherry picking one part of the equation.
Actually saving $250k/year and removing a bad apple from the barrel. JB is not suddenly going to become a gut running tackling machine fully focused on a role and ice cold shot for goal. Melbourne are the ones that bought the pup.

Very grateful for starting this thread Tony74, hope that you're able to give us a weekly report of what's happening at Moorabbin during the off-season, it'll help to deal with withdrawal symptoms when it all ends on the last Saturday in September.

Maybe there are other supporters who attend training sessions that will also contribute....

Yep

Paying players to play elsewhere- good list management eh?!

Now JB is a bad apple? I mean seriously- that is a load of s*** and a distinct lack of respect for a 155 gamer!!!

Saintmike65, if Biilings had been on a contract worth $750 a year, then it showed the true state of our list. A reasonably good player getting paid like a superstar.

Gresham had been on similar money, and Coffield rumoured to have been on $600k.

I just hope that salaries can reflect true value in future. The only way for that to happen is that some genuine stars emerge.

So in 2023, Billings, Gresham, and Coffield cost us roughly about $1.8 million. Amazing, isn't it?

I wish I was an average AFL footballer.

None of those salaries are correct - or even close

And why are we trying to have room in our cap for this season - or any season in fact

We can’t bring in anyone of any note now

I can’t see how paying under your cap for any season is beneficial
The cap is there to level the playing field

This thread is about St Kilda players having a kick down at the ground - not about Billings.

I'm glad you admit you don't understand the complexities.

Now for the next step- assume our experienced management team do.

Is that the experienced management team that thought bringing in Hannebery was a good idea?

Or the newly minted EGM who in a previous role thought Luke Ball was only good for 6 minutes at a time!

Attitude. Bad. Not a team player.
BM are you saying you would like to be in the trenches with JB. Great until there is pressure or bit tired. Yes, I don't respect him as a footballer now he has used the club and bailed when the heat is on.

I would like to ask my fellow esteemed Saintsationlists, does the AFL bring any of its gentle persuasive powers to bare during protracted trade negotiations that are threatening to end in a no-win stalemate?

In other words, it seems to me that JB, like all players , is an asset of the AFL franchise and it is within the AFLs interests, to keep him viable and in the news.

And that extends to adding a little weight to the palm of the hand about the ink a deal.

I suspect the AFL weighed in on the last day of the trade and said, ‘Hurry up and do it Saints’ ‘Remember who you are!’

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!
