Re: Gresham
For me, this Gresham deal will really shine a light on the footy smarts of SoS, Gubby and the off field team.
They really shouldn't be accepting anything other than pick 13 as compo.
If Essendon aren't paying enough to force a pick 13 compo, we absolutely should match to keep him - and/or force the Bombers to raise the offer.
He is in our best 22. If we accept end of first round or worse, then its the start of another unravelling, just like the failed Dal Santo compo back in the day which was an absolute disgrace. They are seriously delusional if they can turn pick 19 into a player as good as Gresh in what is a weak draft and trade market.

Re: Gresham
Good Jade played* his best game of the year against Essendon. Hope they missed most of the others.
*Jade rhymes with played but Gresh didn't mesh.
Maybe overlooked by team mates once too often in the forward pocket at 1 degree in from the boundary.
I hear his plaintive "give it to me, give it to me...good goal, prick."
Then there's all that defensive running Ross demands, so boring. Essendon players don't have to do that, so there.

Re: Gresham
Well, we don't decide what compo pick we get. The AFL will reem us on that. But - do you really want Gresham at Moorabbin a minute longer. If we happened to turn the pick we get for Gresham in a good draftee (that Ross can mould into his type of player) or, Liam Henry (who's younger and has more upside) then, I'm pretty ok with that. Gresham won't get any better at Essendon; he's his own finished product now and to be honest - God only knows why they want another midget wannabe mid who butchers the crap out of it by foot.Zed wrote: ↑Tue 10 Oct 2023 11:44am For me, this Gresham deal will really shine a light on the footy smarts of SoS, Gubby and the off field team.

Re: Gresham
The Injectors will get their money's worth if they turn Gresh back into a small forward, his natural position.
Partly because of his own ambitions and partly because of necessity, the Saints turned him into a midfielder and recruited Butler and Higgins to fill the small forward roles. Ergo there's no longer a position for him at the Saints in his natural position.
Will the Injectors manage to do so? Will Gresh be happy with that? We shall see...

Re: Gresham
At present compensation for Gresham would be
Mid 1st round = pick14
End 1st round = pick21
Mid 2nd round = pick 35
End 2nd round = pick 41
Mid 3rd round = pick 56
End 3rd round = pick 62
Mid 4th round = pick 74
Saints have picks 13, 34, 55 not much currency without using future 2024 picks.
But Coffield, McKenzie and Gresham are expected to improve that currency.
Mid 1st round = pick14
End 1st round = pick21
Mid 2nd round = pick 35
End 2nd round = pick 41
Mid 3rd round = pick 56

Yes, you have to match the length of the contract and total dollar value.

Re: Gresham
Trade radio just said the Saints are trying to get Dodo to do a trade for Gresham, they also said Dodo is not interested in doing a trade.
They speculated Essendon's offer to Gresham doesn't give the saints the Compo pick they were after.

If we're not getting band 1 then we should match and convince him to stay. Essendon won't be trading us anything of value, and if they're not paying that much they clearly don't value Gresh very highly

Re: Gresham
That contradicts reports I've come across that quote Gresham saying he likes playing for Lyon, he certainly was never dropped even when his form declined towards the end of the season. It's more likely that his manager has informed him that he'll get a better deal with Essendon than St Kilda are likely to offer him.
When the Bombers put a firm offer on the table tomorrow, if St Kilda is unhappy with the compensation pick from the AFL he might end up staying put.
Personally, I hope it will turn out that he does move to Windy Hill, on quite a few occasions he's played for himself rather than his team.

Re: Gresham
AFL REPORTED TODAY:
ST KILDA would be comfortable matching Essendon's contract offer to Jade Gresham if it does not trigger end of first-round compensation for the restricted free agent.
The Bombers plan to lodge paperwork for Gresham in the next 24 hours and list manager Adrian Dodoro said the club had not yet been in talks with the Saints as they look to secure the 26-year-old without negotiating a trade.
St Kilda's acting football boss David Misson, however, said Gresham would only move as a free agent if the Bombers' offer triggered adequate compensation, with the club "hoping to get an end of first-round pick".
"The ball really is in Essendon's court there to lodge an offer for Jade. Once that's done, we need to decide if we're going to match that offer and potentially facilitate a trade," Misson told SEN on Wednesday.
"If the compensation we get offered isn't what we'd like, then we would decide whether we want to match it. Jade has a great relationship with Ross (Lyon), so if we have to we'd be very happy to keep Jade at St Kilda if that's the way it starts to look." – Nathan Schmook

It would appear Essendon would like to think so.
Meaning we went cold on Shiel when they asked for too much. They don't need Jade but they would like to get Shiel off the books.

Expect the deal will get done, including Shiel coming to us in the final minutes on the last day, usually do when a player nominates the club he wants to go to. Isn't this just just the usual dance clubs do to hold out to the very end to ensure they maximize all options before closing out.
