Re: Keep Coffield
Interesting he wants to go to a lower performing club with culture problems and a coach under the pump. I guess it's the money and whatever was said at the exit interview.
You'd think the Dogs would want a very thorough medical and have several conditions in the contract. Shame it's come to this.

Re: Keep Coffield
We absolutely must. We used a top 10 draft pic on him and stuck with him through long-term injury. Plus I think he can really play.
Wonder what the issue is? Not rated by the powers that be? Dogs have offered simply a better deal?
Hope I am wrong, but I feel this one could come back to bite us hard. What do we get in return for our long-term investment in Nick?

Re: Keep Coffield
Coff was the natural Webster replacement moving forward. Shame he couldn't get on the park this season because his ceiling is higher than Webster's and I'd prefer him in that role from here on out given his intercept and rebound skills are better. I'd keep a dialogue open with his management about whether we can change his mind.

I don't know what all the fuss is. He wasn't that good at the Saints. Not worth a number 8 pick.

Re: Keep Coffield
What position did he play when he came 5th in the Trevor Barker medal in 2020 (I think), and who has been playing his position these last few years?
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Carlton 2017 draft:
#3 Dow
#10 O’Brien
Both gone now.
1. Hope we don’t get them, but I’m betting we trade for Dow and invite O’Brien to train.
2. What input does the list manager (SOS) have over drafting? After the worst first round drafting of any club in the AFL history during his time at GWS, Carlton didn’t exactly nail their drafting while he was at Carlton until later seasons.
In 2017 I recall hearing we tried to trade with Freo offering 7&8 for 5 and their 2nd pick as we liked Cerra.

Half back. A position now firmly held by Nas.Jacks Back wrote: ↑Fri 06 Oct 2023 6:43am What position did he play when he came 5th in the Trevor Barker medal in 2020 (I think), and who has been playing his position these last few years?
But I'd think his role was more like what Stocker provided this season.

Re: Keep Coffield
A player with speed and good kicking skills....disappointing to lose. The only knock I had on him was that he wasn't keen on the physical stuff.
Hard to know what the club has been playing at with Nick. Had they offered him a deal near the end of the season and he knocked it back? Did they not even offer him a deal? Did he have no intention of staying, anyway?
It could go wither way with Coffield. He could become an A grade running defender or he could end up being just another competent B grader.

Re: Keep Coffield
The list manager has recruiters that give him direction. He might ask them to find the best fit and they give him a list of names in order. Hard to blame SOS entirely.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Fri 06 Oct 2023 7:14am Carlton 2017 draft:

Re: Keep Coffield
How do you know that he was offered that kind of deal?
What are the Dogs offering?
Saints sound like they would prefer to let him leave.
Apart from HB, I can’t see him playing in any other position. He’s no BJ.

Re: Keep Coffield
I was hoping he could turn into a Jake Lever type but he’s not big or strong enough for that type of role. We also have Battle doing that job.
We are well covered for HBs and have better and much more attacking options there as has been pointed out.
He probably can’t play on a wing either.
I don’t see a place for him in the our best team to be honest.
Kid saw the writing on the wall and bailed.
Maybe he can go back and play basketball with his old Footscray mates. He can do some refereeing of the under 11s on the side out at Whitten Oval on a Saturday morning too.
Hope we exploit this and lock in a price for him and screw the dogs hard; real hard.

Re: Keep Coffield
That was basically my assessment of him. Not the type of player to run back with the flight of the ball, or stand in front of a pack.
He has pace and good foot skills, though

be gone with him and his type, time to take to the place with a broom and bring in hard men that can play with one leg cut off.

Re: Keep Coffield
So how do you think Coff leaving will change the situation vis-a-vis other players on the table? Billings? Gresh? Ya think there’ll be a change of tone in those discussions?
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Re: Keep Coffield
I don't either.
But I think his natural position in the 22 has been taken over by Wilkie (never saw him in Webster's role) as a marking intercepter and distributor.
And he's going to struggle to remove a current AA player from the team.

Re: Keep Coffield
I don't think he's been missed in the last couple of years. Is he a midfielder or half back?

Re: Keep Coffield
Why do supporters feel the need to be happy when the club cuts a player who isn't rated but some then feel the need to criticize a player when he says he wants to leave - significant double standards.
I was one hoping to keep Coffield and him getting back to what we saw when he finished 5th in B& F.
Injuries have been significant but with a new staff in and the early calf it seems that put a line through him.
He could become the 20's version of Tom Lynch not given chance or not seen as right size/ speed and turns out to be 200 game player elsewhere or could be Ben Long or the like a bit part player elsewhere.
Time will tell but IMO no need to bag the guy personally because he wants to leave
