Re: Clarry
Do we want him?
Obviously a great player but if we’re paying a king’s ransom it should be for a specific type of player and I don’t think he’s it. A disposal accumulator (albeit an exceptional one) with iffy disposal is not exactly high on the shopping list for me.

I highly doubt we’d be making a play for him. I can imagine a club like Geelong might.

He is the player Geelong needs, but they also need to go to the draft for a few years before they bounce back.Sainternist wrote: ↑Wed 04 Oct 2023 2:34pm I highly doubt we’d be making a play for him. I can imagine a club like Geelong might.

They want King Gresham and pick 12 and they want half Kings wage paid and a new Chery SUV for Gresham's mum.

Does he have drug issues?
If not, why not?
He's a clearance beast.
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

True, but they still seem to have an uncanny knack of reeling in big-name players.Otiman wrote: ↑Wed 04 Oct 2023 3:06pmHe is the player Geelong needs, but they also need to go to the draft for a few years before they bounce back.Sainternist wrote: ↑Wed 04 Oct 2023 2:34pm I highly doubt we’d be making a play for him. Re: Clarry
I doubt whether is he really on the table. Just think they want to pull him into line.
But if you had to choose one player to make you a contender, he'd be right up there.
Whether we could afford him or satisfy Melbourne's demands is another thing altogether.

was out injured....then there was the scuttlebutt....then denials from club and even from the muckraking scribe's who are the source of most rumours.....then surprisingly his standard 3 week hammy becomes a 10 week hammy .....then end of season he's being shopped around .

Re: Clarry
I hope our club doesn't follow this ridiculous trend of giving 7+ year deals.
I'd be gob smacked if Oliver fitted into our supposed current list build strategy...as he doesn't.
Lyon has to be in it for the long term...like 10 years. Let's build through the national draft as a core strategy, and then through a diverse range of options that don't include overpriced URFA or FAs until we are clearly in the premiership window and have a genuine hole to plug.
Our list is way of the need for an overpriced anchor.

While I dont disagree, Oliver has been thrown up just to see if Essendon are for real.Vortex wrote: ↑Thu 05 Oct 2023 8:38am I hope our club doesn't follow this ridiculous trend of giving 7+ year deals.

Believe they are ready for finals, just need 3 players like McKay Gresham and Oliver.
Believe they have the cash, 2 down 1 to go.
Well they have pick 8 but they don't have Gresh, just yet and they still have Shiel at $1.6m.

Re: Clarry
Yep
Billings, 12, 13
for Oliver
and 3rd round pick to absorb Shiel's salary
But we need to somehow get Henry too.
Package Coff,Dmac,Ross to GC for a pick in the 20s for Henry.
In: Shiel, Oliver, Henry
Out: Gresh, Dmac, Ross, Billings
Clayton is the inside + outside + burst mid that is exactly what we need in one player.
Gordon Fode couldda been Plugga

Re: Clarry
In that context it's easy to conclude things aren't great between Oliver and Melbourne, not good after locking him into a massive long term expensive contract, it worked for the Pies offloading Grundy so possibly Melbourne are following the Pies list management technique?CQ SAINT wrote: ↑Thu 05 Oct 2023 8:58amWhile I dont disagree, Oliver has been thrown up just to see if Essendon are for real.Vortex wrote: ↑Thu 05 Oct 2023 8:38am I hope our club doesn't follow this ridiculous trend of giving 7+ year deals.

Re: Clarry
He's made a few statements in the media since re joining that has me thinking he thinks it's going to take a lot longer than his first 4 years, I see that as a good sign as the key to his success surely comes from the long term game.spert wrote: ↑Thu 05 Oct 2023 10:14amI don't reckon Lyon will hang around if we have a couple of ordinary yearsVortex wrote: ↑Thu 05 Oct 2023 8:38am I hope our club doesn't follow this ridiculous trend of giving 7+ year deals.

Re: Clarry
Rap on him was that he wasn't towing the club line regarding keeping match fitness while rehabbing, partying too much etc. - apparently had to move in with Gawn to try and straighten him out and Gawn has had enough. The shopping him around thing is similar to what Tigers did with Dusty to get him back in line - worst case is they lose a player they can't control, best case he pulls his head in.

Re: Clarry
Industry needs to respect that Max G is now Oliver's carer and has modified his home accordingly. Let it settle, the easy clean wall coatings and naughty room are expensive.
Oliver, poor dear, was poor and dear in the finals series and is no doubt trying to come to terms with that: blaming his club and others is a good first step to self awareness.
Probably has been able to behave as he likes for over 20 years and finds the current attitude where Melbourne is fed up with him difficult. (Where did that come from?)
I feel sorry for a guy on close to a mill a year, gifted with athletic ability and red hair, no family concerns, playing for a top club that spoon feeds him care and attention. No wonder he has gone off the rails, where were the periodic reality checks. Poor Clayton. Its just not his fault.
Of course going out is straight sets in consecutive years with a team that should be in the grand finals tends to cause a general angst and impatience with prima donnas that don't earn their keep. Then in hobbles mouthy Clarrie and his foot tat.

Re: Clarry
Well, if he has issues that HE thinks are issues & wants support...great.
If not he may create dramas we don't need.
It's pretty hard to party like a maniac & escape scrutiny these days even if you do play well.
He definitely is a beast and we can use a beast.

Hanneberry was alleged to love a party and Colombian marching powder too.

I was 100% ok with Hanneberry coming along especially if he could lift beyond his past. He proved he did just that...but his body never let him return to the game.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Thu 05 Oct 2023 1:59pm Hanneberry was alleged to love a party and Colombian marching powder too.

If Clarry has things he knows he can grow beyond AND bring the intensity to Saints...we'd be mad not to try.
Unlike some (Steven) who were great players but the demons finally controlled him & he washed up on the shores of shame.
