Re: Gresham
This thread is confused no scenario floated sees st Kilda giving up any pick other than 31. I think there was a mistake in the wording of an article by Jon Ralph which has caused a stir. St Kilda lose Gresham and 31, gain 13 and Shiel

Agreed!! However once father-son & academy picks & free agency are assigned. It might blow out to 40

Re: Gresham
What is in it for Essendon?
They get like for like on the salary front.
They get rid of a VFL list clogger.
They do get Gresham for free.
Gresham is a big winner - salary wise
Offsiding the AFL on the technicalities of the rules is a downside.
Essendon have their eye on that first round pick

Re: Gresham
Some of the things we have done at the trade table have been so unbelievably stupid, so yeah, I do believe it. Remember us giving up Cripps to Eagles for bugger all? They said they would reciprocate in kind at some time in the future - then we wanted Mitch Brown and they wouldn't deal.takeaway wrote: ↑Wed 27 Sep 2023 8:07amThe report was from the HS, John Ralph? Surely you don't believe that rubbish. It was written by Essendon FC. No way will that happen.samuraisaint wrote: ↑Tue 26 Sep 2023 3:57pmNo, that's not correct according to the paper this morning. According to John Ralph in the HS we have to give Essendon that pick 13 for Dylan Shiel.takeaway wrote: ↑Sat 23 Sep 2023 4:12pm"Let's just focus on drafting the best youth we can get".samuraisaint wrote: ↑Sat 23 Sep 2023 2:29pm No to another player in his 30s with injury issues thanks.
In fact, no to any player over 28. That includes Boak or anybody like that.
Let's just focus on drafting the best youth we can get. In a couple of years Tasmania will come in and it will be like the endless cycle of draft concessions GWS, and the Suns (and Sydney) have been getting for over a decade. We need to get our next two or three drafts right.
Then it comes down to player development. It's lucky we have Lyon coaching, because the next three years are going to be all important to the long-term success of the club.
That's what they are doing with this proposed deal isn't it? If Gresh goes, pick 13 is much better than 31, better chance of getting a quality youngster, or even package 12 & 13 to go higher in the draft. Shiel is a side issue, and might even give a couple of good years, which would be a bonus.
We are virtually paying Essendon in order to get better FA compensation.
Seems a good move by the Saints to get a better draft hand, although we are dealing with Dodoro, and the AFL has to approve.
That would be an absolute howler of a move. An injury prone 31-year-old for Gresh? No thanks.
I'd rather us keep Gresh thanks.
Your friendly neighbourhood samurai.

Re: Gresham
Recieving pick 13 for Gresham and giving 31 for Shiel is a bonus deal.
If it's available, take it. No brainer. We lose nothing in terms of onfield contribution and gain pick 13.
Offer Shiel 2 years at a discounted rate on the 1 he has left and our midfield improves immediately.
Shiel, Dow and Henry will add grunt and speed and, if Billings,Jones and Mackenzie come good, we will look at lot different on the outside and potentially a lot better than last year

Re: Gresham
Again on gettable
Twomey believes we will be getting the 13 Compo pick and then handing it back to Essendon for Shiel
However, he thinks Essendon will be paying some of his wage
I am only interested in the pick - not at all interested in handing it straight back for a 31yo mid with injury history
Happy to give pick 50, maybe even 31
But pick 13 is outrageous- I don’t care if Essendon is paying some of his salary

Re: Gresham
Why the f*** would we give 13 for Shiel....that would be outrageous, salary or not, what is the point.
Shiel could easily break down and never play again.
Take 12 and 13 to the draft, or 13 and future first for a top 5 pick.

Re: Gresham
So....let me get this insane scenario. Gresham walks to Essendon and we then give them pick 13 for an injured guy near the end of his career.
Essendon get the biggest gift in trade history
In return we make a massive net loss
This surely cannot be real. If it is, then clearly the coach and the list manager have lost their minds

Maybe if halfwit Gallagher or Trout were still at the helm.
Like, love or hate RTB, he’s nobody’s fool and would have his input in this.
No way this is accurate, not possible.
Would make the Hill and Hannebery trades look like winners.

I'd like to get it straight as well. We give Gresham to Essendon and get pick 13 as compo. We get Shiel from Essendon and give them pick 13.cwrcyn wrote: ↑Thu 28 Sep 2023 7:14am So....let me get this insane scenario. So we lose Gresham but get Shiel. Essendon lose Shiel but get Gresham AND pick 13. FMD

Ess get gresh our compensation maybe 30 something
If we wanted shiel we would trade a pick and pay his contract
IF WITH THE SUGGESTED DEAL
Ess would increase gresh contract to trigger 13
We the give 13 to ess for shiel
Essendon will then pay some of shiel contract

Has Gresham called out Essendon as preferred destination? Would have thought Hawks, Blues, Cats and a couple others would be well into him.

Re: Gresham
It seems pretty simple, and as an outsider it seems like we should be in the box seat. So telling Essedon that we wont match the bid for Gresham, if their contract triggers a band 1 compensation pic, and tell them that we will absorb Sheil's contract, and will give them pick 13 (compensation pick) for pick 8 and potentially pick 51 as well.

Re: Gresham
If we give a pick around 13 for just Shiel then Ross and Silvagni need to be fired on the spot.
That would be one of the most ridiculous trade deals ever.
Ross does have a history of trading that screws over the Saints so I wouldn't put it past him.
He was the man behind the rank stupidity that traded Andrew Lovett for pick 16.

#26 to Swans for Schneider & Dempster in return wasn't a bad trade by RTB in his relationship with Swans players and coaches.SinCitySainter wrote: ↑Thu 28 Sep 2023 9:53am If we give a pick around 13 for just Shiel then Ross and Silvagni need to be fired on the spot.

BTW #26 was used on Brett Meredith by the Swans.

Re: Gresham
Over riding image in the media is that St KIlda are open to trade Gresham.
How true is this?
Because, if it is true, wouldn't Gresh be like, 'Well, they don't really love me too much"??
And then what?
Trains his arse off over summer?
Hires a sports psych?
Doubt it.
THoughts?

Re: Gresham
What's in it for Essendon? They get to do a big salary dump (Shiel) which allows them to secure their other targets. Shiel was a salary millstone. Getting him off their books is a big deal for them.repta wrote: ↑Wed 27 Sep 2023 2:50pm What is in it for Essendon?

I'm sure they will want to get back that first round pick we receive as Gresham compo but there is NO way that is going to happen.
If the deal goes down, Essendon get Gresham, get Shiel off their salary cap books plus a third rounder from us. We will have a first round pick to go with our other first round pick and Shiel.
It gives us a chance to move up the draft which clearly the club wants to do. Would not be surprised if the Saints have a specific player in the draft they want to target, currently well above our first available pick.
If the AFL approves the deal, then it's a good result for the Saints and some clever trading.

Re: Gresham
Just because Essendon is pimping Shiel and that is backed by a media that is willing to push a convoluted line doesn't mean Saints are entertaining it in the least. Gresham has backed himself into a corner and we can wait. We don't need Shiel, we don't need Gresham. His agent would be doing some fancy footwork and buying a few lunches at the moment. Gresham has played his hand badly, every team now knows he is fairly desperate, has few options and probably over values his worth.

If the rumours are true, that Essendon are willing to offer Gresham enough to trigger a 1st round compo for us (supposedly pick 13). In exchange for offloading Shiel and getting pick 50 in return, then that's quite a deal.
That would give us picks 12 & 13 which we could possibly trade to Gold Coast for pick 4. All that in effect, for Gresham & pick 50. I'd be doing that deal in a heartbeat.
Can not happen
Saints trade pick 50 for shiel as a salary dump.
Gresham selected as a free agent by essendon paying overs and giving us pick 12
Saints trade pick 12 and 13 for pick 4
That is what I said.
The previous post stated that we could get pick 4 for Gresham and pick 50.
Its actually Gresham, pick 12 and pick 50 used to get pick 4 and Shiel.
I personally don't think we will get pick 4 and would rather not get Shiel.
