Re: Dylan Shiel
The other thing of note imo.
Billings could easily fill the Gresham role/output of this year.
Billings isn't going to attract much by way of trade where as Gresham can get as a 1st round pick (upgrade from 2nd) and Shiel potentially.

Re: Dylan Shiel
People fixating on Shiel in this completely miss the point
He’s 1 year salary goes off book’s end next year meaning we’ve just freed up circa $800 k to have a crack at FA
We struggle to park all our salary cap $ now
IF we get 13 it’s smart business and kudos to SOS and co for going lateral …..we don’t get Nth handouts so we gotta be creative
Lions and Bombers previously manipulated same process with Daniher …why not us?? As Brett would say

Exactly. Everyone’s caught up on “Shiel” look past that and see we got 2x First Rounders if the deal goes through. So much flexibility with that.Teflon wrote: ↑Mon 25 Sep 2023 10:22am People fixating on Shiel in this completely miss the point

Re: Dylan Shiel
From Fox Sports:
DONS, SAINTS CONCOCTING SHREWD FREE AGENCY PLAY
Essendon and St Kilda reportedly in crafty negotiations that could see the Bombers land an extra first round pick at this year’s draft.
According to The Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph, the clubs’ experienced list bosses Adrian Dodoro and Stephen Silvagni are concocting a trade and free agency ploy that could see an extra first round pick get created through free-agency compensation for St Kilda free agent Jade Gresham.
The pick would then get handed back to the Bombers in a trade for midfielder Dylan Shiel.
If we use pick 13 on Dylan Shiel, I won't be renewing my membership. Dylan Shiel is barely worth a second round pick.

Absolute joke if true.
No to this. We went through all of this with DH back in 2019 and Shiel isn't 28. Never again thanks.

Re: Dylan Shiel
obviously speculation, however i would hope that we are then able to split 13 into a later first round pick and second or 2 seconds, 1 goes back to Ess for Shiel and 1 to Freo for Henry
Keep 12 ,
get Shiel and Henry
Lose Gresham
that seems to work ok
Alternative
Get Henry using 2nd round pick
Lose Gresham

Re: Dylan Shiel
This is from SEN:
Dylan Shiel (Essendon) & Jade Gresham (St Kilda)
“The theory is, as reported in the Herald Sun yesterday, Essendon has an abundance of midfielders and Dylan Shiel turns 31 in March.
“He’s coming off a 12-game season and coming into the last year of his contract on a decent wage. This was his big six-year deal when crossing from the Giants when Carlton came hard for him.
“St Kilda aren’t interested in keeping Jade Gresham despite what they say publicly. He’s also well paid, and they need more midfield support.
“Gresham would leave as a free agent and because Essendon would pay him enough it gives St Kilda either a first-round or end of first-round compensation pick. It would be 13 given their first pick is 12, or at the end of the first round of course.
“Then the trade period sometime later, St Kilda send a pick back to Essendon for Shiel. The theory goes it could be that same pick that they use in the Gresham deal. List managers I’ve spoken to said they would be floored if the Saints gave up a first-rounder for Shiel.
“They’ve got 31 so it would be more likely that the Saints would give up 31, or that second-round pick for Shiel and Essendon allow it given the Saints would be taking on Dylan Shiel’s wage at the same time.
“Essentially it’s a pick buy. St Kilda will be buying a pick here.”

Re: Dylan Shiel
Here's a scenario to you, how would the AFL feel about this?
Team A and B both have a free agent on their list, say they are a GOP, role playing, bottom 6 in the best 22.
This year, Team B offers team A's player an 800k 3 year deal - gets a 1st round compo pick.
Next year, Team A offers team B's player an 800k 3 year deal - also gets a 1st round compo pick.
Both teams have effectively bought a first round pick with cap space.

Re: Dylan Shiel
Essendon don’t have a cap issue tho
Perhaps Essendon take gresh as reported we get first round
But we get Shiel for 0 salary cap impact in 24 but have to give the pick back
Essentially Shiel for $0 impact allowing us to hit the FA elsewhere
Either that or we keep Shiel and his salary and give back a later pick but I don’t think Essendon need cap relief so why would they do that??

but sounds like a mega deal for Essendon that gets to Salary dump on a surplus player get pick 13 and get the free agent for nothing that they want.

Supposedly Essendon have more cap space than us so I don’t know why they would be interested in salary dumping
In any event I would still rather just keep the compo pick don’t get me wrong. But I reckon Essendon would prefer Shiel over pick 31 so something doesn’t stack up

The compensation is worked out on the totality of the free agency gains/losses.
In your scenario, neither team would receive a compensation pick.

One thing this has done is flagged we are a destination for a cap dump. Expect offers of picks to cap dump players. Possibly from Port Adelaide.

Re: Dylan Shiel
His stats were great c2018 - 2019
If only our medical team could come up with a cure for OLD. Of couree if they did that they wont stick around as they will own private islands as the industry for a cure for OLD is worth trillions
His injuries are symptomatic of an OLD player at the end of his playing days. There is no turning back the clock on a player over 30. The cake is cooked. A slice might get moist if you bang it in the microwave for 20s. But ultimately there is no real hope.
Shiel is -what- 7 best Essendon midfielder this year? A team thar didnt make the top 8.
List clogger. Hope brown and white stripes suit him.

If all this accomplishes by us composing a pick 13 for Gresham is to give it to Essendon for an overpaid 31-year-old, it SUCKS.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Tue 26 Sep 2023 5:33pm This is from SEN:

I can see why we do this to allow Essendon to salary dump Shiel for a much later pick. But not for the compo pick going straight back.
