Re: Gresham
I don’t know anything about this player Shiel.
Just say, for instance, somebody compared out potential picking-up of him to Collingwood grabbing Tom Mitchell. What would you say?
Mitchell was probably nearly 30, third club.
And there have been a few others.

Re: Gresham
Shiel at his best was a jet. He is the type of mid we are lacking. I'll back Ross to get him back near his best, if not his best and get 2 or maybe 3 good years out of him.
If the rumours are true, that Essendon are willing to offer Gresham enough to trigger a 1st round compo for us (supposedly pick 13). In exchange for offloading Shiel and getting pick 50 in return, then that's quite a deal.
That would give us picks 12 & 13 which we could possibly trade to Gold Coast for pick 4. All that in effect, for Gresham & pick 50. I'd be doing that deal in a heartbeat.

Re: Gresham
Whatever we get from Essendon (if the deal goes through) it'll be watered down by the compo picks to North Melbourne

Saints trade pick 50 for shiel as a salary dump.
Gresham selected as a free agent by essendon paying overs and giving us pick 12
Saints trade pick 12 and 13 for pick 4

Re: Gresham
the saints rarely ever go to the trading table.and win.
Certainly always get shafted by Essendon at the trading table.
Getting a injury riden pensioner on an absorbant salary is not a good deal. He is ranked what 6th best in a team that was 11 on the ladder.
Are we contender or pretender?
Stop with list cloggers. Stop with has beens. They will never be great again. There is no cure for old.
There is very few over 30s midfielders as there bodies are stuffed.
If it really is Greham and pick 50
For shiel and pick 13ish
Ok. Guarantee bombers are eyeing off.that first round pick for themeves.
How else does that salary dump actually work. Like for like on salaries?

Re: Gresham
For Essendon it's:
Shiel out ($800k)
McKay in ($900k)
Gresham in ($800k to trigger the R1 pick)
Pick 31 or 50 in
I don't see how this benefits their salary cap position for McKay.
They'll still need to find some cap space to dump. Perhaps they have another high $ player they want to offload as part of the deal.

Re: Gresham
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2023/09/26/ ... -and-more/
Dylan Shiel (Essendon) & Jade Gresham (St Kilda)
“The theory is, as reported in the Herald Sun yesterday, Essendon has an abundance of midfielders and Dylan Shiel turns 31 in March.
“He’s coming off a 12-game season and coming into the last year of his contract on a decent wage. This was his big six-year deal when crossing from the Giants when Carlton came hard for him.
“St Kilda aren’t interested in keeping Jade Gresham despite what they say publicly. He’s also well paid, and they need more midfield support.
“Gresham would leave as a free agent and because Essendon would pay him enough it gives St Kilda either a first-round or end of first-round compensation pick. It would be 13 given their first pick is 12, or at the end of the first round of course.
“Then the trade period sometime later, St Kilda send a pick back to Essendon for Shiel. The theory goes it could be that same pick that they use in the Gresham deal. List managers I’ve spoken to said they would be floored if the Saints gave up a first-rounder for Shiel.
“They’ve got 31 so it would be more likely that the Saints would give up 31, or that second-round pick for Shiel and Essendon allow it given the Saints would be taking on Dylan Shiel’s wage at the same time.
“Essentially it’s a pick buy. St Kilda will be buying a pick here.”

Re: Gresham
This.
Im struggling to see Essendon willing to trade Shiel for anything less than a 2nd rounder - even if it is a salary dump.
The Andrew Lovett saga still burns. Essendon supporters still laugh about that.
And even if somehow, we do get Shiel for pick 50, I reckon there is every chance he plays at most a handful of games before he breaks down, retires, or "needs time away" - and we are left paying out his contract.

Re: Gresham
No, that's not correct according to the paper this morning. According to John Ralph in the HS we have to give Essendon that pick 13 for Dylan Shiel.takeaway wrote: ↑Sat 23 Sep 2023 4:12pm"Let's just focus on drafting the best youth we can get".samuraisaint wrote: ↑Sat 23 Sep 2023 2:29pm No to another player in his 30s with injury issues thanks.
In fact, no to any player over 28. That includes Boak or anybody like that.
Let's just focus on drafting the best youth we can get. In a couple of years Tasmania will come in and it will be like the endless cycle of draft concessions GWS, and the Suns (and Sydney) have been getting for over a decade. We need to get our next two or three drafts right.
Then it comes down to player development. It's lucky we have Lyon coaching, because the next three years are going to be all important to the long-term success of the club.
That's what they are doing with this proposed deal isn't it? If Gresh goes, pick 13 is much better than 31, better chance of getting a quality youngster, or even package 12 & 13 to go higher in the draft. Shiel is a side issue, and might even give a couple of good years, which would be a bonus.
We are virtually paying Essendon in order to get better FA compensation.
Seems a good move by the Saints to get a better draft hand, although we are dealing with Dodoro, and the AFL has to approve.
That would be an absolute howler of a move. An injury prone 31-year-old for Gresh? No thanks.

Re: Gresham
Guys, this trade isn't even about Shiel. We are taking his salary for draft pick 13. If we get some games and leadership out of him it's a bonus.
Clearly there's a plan to utilise our picks 12 and 13 and this is the real plan. We could either trade them both for a higher pick in the top 10, or keep 12 and split the 13 into picks.
We could actually walk away from this trade/draft period with:
OUT:
Gresham
IN:
Henry
Shiel
Sanders
Talk about bolstering the midfield !

Maybe, I'd still do the deal if we gave up pick 32. If we give up a FRDP for Shiel then Bassett should start firing the coaching and recruitment team. We should see if the cats would take pick 12 for Hawkins another key forward would be handy.

I think we'd have the most recruits from other clubs in the comp. We need homegrown Saints from-the-start players rather than all of these (sometimes crappy) imports.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
