North Melbourne's compensation
So, the AFL have gifted the Kangaroos again. That club made decisions in the past 6 years that deliberately set them down this path. Firstly, they recruited older players from other clubs in a tilt to win a premiership between 2013 and 2016. After that failed, they went down the full tank mode. No one forced them to take that approach, yet here they are again being gifted draft compensations that not one other club agrees with. Their attempts to get Sanders have now taken a turn for the better, with the points capital to challenge a bid without it affecting their early picks.
Currently, they have Sheezel, Wardlaw, Thomas, and Davies-Uniacke, all very early picks they got for taking the tanking option over the past few years. Now they are in a position to get two more highly rated midfielders, even without the AFL assistance, which will give them, within 2 years, the most dominant midfield in the competition.
This is a huge mistake by the AFL and there a re a lot of angry people. It seems that whatever Clarko wants from the AFL , he gets. Remember, he built a premiership team at Hawthorn with a few priority picks, which they received only a couple of years after playing finals.
They will be a much hated club from 2024 onwards.

Re: North Melbourne's compensation
Norf’s AFL assistance includes:
1 FRDP at the end of the first round in this year’s national draft 2023
2 FRDP at the end of the first round in the 2024 draft which is subject to review at the end of next season
No caveats on these picks either. They can keep, they can trade etc.
Talk about incentivising mediocrity!
They are only allowed to bid on Sanders who was declared an academy player after pick 40 but he is most likely to go before then.
I can’t really understand the need for this, particularly the second bit of assistance which involves TWO additional picks which is way over the top.
Ridiculous!
Where did Laura Kane work before?
It’s a very bad look.

Chris Scott actually took this to task on 360 last night. I couldn’t believe my ears.

Re: North Melbourne's compensation
This compensation is a disgrace for a self inflicted wound.
If anything they should be made to trade them because they need an immediate injection of talent not a speculative selction so they can get a player that would potentially walk out after two years.
If North qualify, then the Eagles won't be far behind.
We are in for many seasons of compromised drafts. North for the next two, the Eagles if they don't improve, then Tassie!

The North compensation is a joke. They have only had four poor seasons. This year was only as bad as it was because their coach took leave.

Re: North Melbourne's compensation
I know that, but they're in a worse mess than North and none of it was self inflicted.Beno88 wrote: ↑Tue 26 Sep 2023 3:41pmIt's been a whole five years since West Coast won a flag.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Tue 26 Sep 2023 3:31pm This compensation is a disgrace for a self inflicted wound.

Only elements missing are no games in WA, SA and Qld, no 6 day breaks, no games against the top 4. No MRO reviews.

They were 2-7 with a percentage of 62.9. Re: North Melbourne's compensation
I am repeating myself here
Expansion clubs take some cream
Big clubs take all the free agents / expansion club leavers
Bottomers like North take the remaining top players.
Leaves very little for teams in the middle.
Also, losing out soon to Tassie draft concessions.

Re: North Melbourne's compensation
Gill was mightily defensive last night about the big leg up to North, with a hint of narky vindictiveness. Interesting precedent. Interesting legacy also. AFL is Mortgaged to betting industry, beholden to broadcasters, has declining fan experiences, umpiring in crisis, bending over for Collingwood now a KPI, a mythical Tasmanian team, Brownlow that's been made an irrelevant curiosity- even the winner was slightly embarrassed. Richard Goyder has been a god send to Joyce and Gill. Bad luck about everyone else.

Re: North Melbourne's compensation
If the AFL feel the necessity for compensation picks, perhaps they should develop and publish a formula which is transparent to all.
Such an algorithm may allocate points for 'number of years since last premiership', number of finals appearance in 'previous 10 years, number of games won past 5 years .. etc ..

Re: North Melbourne's compensation
Isn't it a way of saying 'sorry' to North?
Sorry that your coach took a hit so that the AFL could take a stand on racism. Sorry and unlucky for the few years since Scott left. For trying to marginlise you, send you to Tassie as a 'Bridesmaid' team?
Sorry for shafting you in the '90s?
Dunno
I suspect there is a bit of 'sorry, thanks champ' going on.
And what did we expect Gil to say now anyway? After the deed is done?
Another more cycnical way to look at is that it is a trap, a set up
1) We are giving you priority pics
2) We well know those players will leave to go to more successful clubs
3) When we force you to close down, merge or re-locate we can at least say, 'We tried to help you, we really did'

Re: North Melbourne's compensation
North win Flags SG. I think a lot of their young players will stay with them. Apart from obvious highly publicized examples, their players tend to stick. They were playing in preliminary finals in the not-too-distant past. They decided to retire and clear players to rebuild and now they are asking for assistance. I would like us to ask for assistance based on the fact we haven't won a flag for nearly 60 years, but it won't happen.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Wed 27 Sep 2023 9:20pm Isn't it a way of saying 'sorry' to North?

Re: North Melbourne's compensation
What are the chances Gill Mc will soon be a job where he flips completely and passionately advocates for the purity of market forces and against any regulatory interference. Something like (unless you are a robber baron entrepreneur) authorities should not try to pick winners and invest accordingly, and oh, subsidies for my industry is a different thing.
The support North has been given will come back to haunt the AFL because it is so arbitrarily designed, no strings attached and will not be managed by the AFL to ensure it is used as intended. If Suns, GWS, Sydney and now North keep getting special treatment how long before other clubs fans just lose interest because the game's rigged. And don't mention the lurking money pit of a Tasmanian side.
At least in horse racing there is some science to the allocation of handicaps. Do we think Laura K excused herself because of perceived conflict of interest. No we don't. What if Formula 1 set the grid with the slowest getting the prime pole positions. I suppose it would make for more crashes and compelling TV, but as a merit based contest, not so much.
