Dylan Shiel
This is being reported on AFL website;
Shiel is 30 , injury prone and is on par with Gresh for s*** disposal plus we’d be picking the difference in the salary cap.
Apparently there’s discussions around trading picks as well.
Would we really do this deal?

Re: Dylan Shiel
FYI , this deal is all about getting the Saints a mid first draft pick.
The background to this is effectively is an inducement to have the Don's pay Gresham enough that we get band 1 compensation for Gresham.
So the Don's pay him extra in $$/years.
Saints then get Pick 13 FA Compo (ie Pick after our first round pick 12).
In return we take Shiel off their hands including his one year remaining of his contract in 2024 of about $800K (He is on a 6 year $4.8 million deal, so it may not be a flat amount per year).
Shiel would not be traded for our first round pick as swapping 12 to get 13 would make no sense), but may be say swapped for pick 31.
No deal may mean that Gresh only generates at best Pick 19, but may much later in FA Compo. Alternatively Saints match and try and trade with Essendon. Or we just match and try and keep Gresham.
The attraction to to Essendon is trade value for Shiel would not normally be good, and that they get Gresham for free tradewise, but yes will cost them more $$ for him, though will save the Dons some Salary Cap next year.

Re: Dylan Shiel
Exactly. We are literally taking on a first round draft pick, Shiels salary, for a late draft pick in a heavily compromised draft and Gresham at a loss.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Sun 24 Sep 2023 1:10pmFYI , this deal is all about getting the Saints a mid first draft pick.

I think it’s amazing. We can package our two first rounds for Gold Costs pick 4 and a future that we can give to Freo for Henry or we split it and get Dow and Henry and something else. It’s really smart and gives us options. Or we get two late first rounders.
On Shiel… from all reports he is an ultimate professional and can teach our younger boys about midfield craft, off field standards and the like. I think it’s worth it.

This sounds like rorting to me. I can’t see how the AFL are going to approve this deal.

What will he offer that Steele, Ross, Crouch, Harvey, Hayes and Goddard can’t?TheGreatZacsby wrote: ↑Sun 24 Sep 2023 1:44pmExactly. Re: Dylan Shiel
Nothing to do with what Shiel can offer. He's the steak knives.
Bummers pay Gresh more but dump Shiel's salary.
It's about the draft pick.
The value will be in the return we get from the better compensation pick.
There is a thread titled 'Astute Trading.' This is astute trading.
However, I can't imagine the AFL will give it the nod.

Re: Dylan Shiel
Why? They OK'd the Bowes trade between the Suns and Cats last season.
GC gave up a first round pick and Bowes for SFA just to dump salary.

Thee would have to be two separate deals.
1. Gresham free agency giving Saints #13
2. Deal for Sheil (there’s no ‘D’) which is hopefully #50 and take his wage.

1. The bombers pay what they pay for Gresham especially if we're a chance to match an offer.
2. Not sure who you're correcting on the spelling, but Shiel is well into the twilight of his career and has injury and disposal issues against him. Not sure he's worth a high pick on the open market.

I can’t see why AFL won’t give it a nod.
They would want a big name like Shiel playing football than being Essendons tactical sub week in week out.
But look past the Shiel part and look at the flexibility that two first round draft picks brings us.
We can do three things on face value:
(1) Get two first round draft picks like a midfielder and a key back. I don’t think this is the best option because the draft is so compromised with Gold Coasts Academy Players, North Melbournes Sanders and Compo pick for Mackay and there’s a few father sons there too. So they become real late first rounders.
(2) We package up the picks to Gold Coast and get pick 4 back in return and a late pick even. Zane Duursma or even Colby Mckercher anybody?
(3) We split one of the first round picks and get Henry and Dow.

Re: Dylan Shiel
The volume of capex this clown turned down because apparently Essendon were going places is frightening.
The trade, assuming it comes to fruition, makes sense. But Shiel was overrated 5 years ago when several clubs (including us) were recklessly opening their wallet to lure him and he remains overrated now.

Re: Dylan Shiel
I don't hate it. If we're effectively taking on Shiel to upgrade our Gresham compo from second round to first round then let's do it. Would have to be a token late pick traded to Essendon and I imagine Shiel would want another couple of years on his contract which is fine if he's prepared to halve his yearly salary.
Gresham out with Shiel, Henry and Dow in is a step up. We could probably split the Gresham compo and get both Henry and Dow with that return which let's us keep a first round pick.
The issue is that we're still not addressing the lack of an absolute top line mid. Maybe we do try to turn picks 12 and 13 into a top 5 pick and sell off late/future picks to trade in players.

Re: Dylan Shiel
Just had a closer look at Shiels stats.
If you disregard this year he looks a good recruit.
2022 - averaged 23 disposals, 6 clearances (4 center), 5 tackles, 313 meters gained
For comparison this year.
Jack Steele - 24 disposals, 5 clearances (2 center), 7 tackles, 280 meters gained
Brad Crouch- 27 disposals, 5.5 clearances (2 center), 6 tackles, 284 meters gained.
Now I know these stats aren't the most in depth and I've disregarded his 2023 season so sharing it for full disclosure.
2023: 19 touches, 3 clearances (1 center), 3 tackles, 320m gained.
Looks to me like an interrupted season and more of an outside running role.
He's not a perfect get for us but does meet the brief of us bringing in some support for our midfield. If that can be achieved whilst lowering our salary cap commitments and improving our draft hand then I am warming to the idea.

Re: Dylan Shiel
What a fall from grace for Sheil.
He’s going to be better than whoever we would choose at pick 50.
Free agency opens before trade period doesn’t it ? so the “gentleman’s agreement” only comes into effect after that?
Would we last year taken pick 7 and Bowes?

Not sure we had the cap space then.
I think Hunter Clark with a lesser deal and losing Gresham frees us up to do this.

Why do we want a mid first round pick so desperately for? Have you seen the draft this year? I am not sure who we are willing to trade Gresham sheils for? Happy to see Gresham go but not if it costs a couple of hundred grand in salary cap

Decent stats on that reflection, but weren’t we offering $1.2 to $1.5mill a season when he was on the market and in his prime?nostalgicsaint wrote: ↑Mon 25 Sep 2023 8:12am Just had a closer look at Shiels stats.

Would have been the most overpaid midfielder in the comp had the deal been done?
