perfectionist wrote: Sat 23 Sep 2023 1:38pm He played well. His pace in foot races to get to contests was especially noteworthy. But he wasn't the player who cost GWS the game. That was Lachie Ash (no.7). Last week, I can remember thinking that you can't have someone like him on the backline - he gives the ball away with poor disposal or poor decision making. And so it happened. In the third quarter, with GWS three goals in front, after the first of the quarter, they had Collingwood on the mat. Then, on a forward move with numbers out of the backline, Ash kicked it straight to Collingwood. They goaled and got four more for the quarter.
Bulldust. 30 seconds before that happened Tom Greene got caught htb. Also why didn't the senior player in Josh Kelly take responsibility. He handballed it to Ash who had to kick under pressure

Ash killed us. Got 30 against St Kilda and cut us up with his kicking. You're isolating a few incidents from a young player. Even the champions of the game make errors.

After GWS kicked a goal in the 3rd quarter through Toby Greene's brilliance, there was no score for 8 minutes. Collingwood were building pressure with repeat inside 50's. You can't say it was Ash's miskick that cost them the game. Ridiculous!

GWS actually stopped their momentum with a goal of their own and got back to a 2 goal lead before Collingwood continued their run and gun. Collingwood were only 4 points up at 3 quarter time

You have to remember that Collingwood were fresh and GWS had a 6 day break with 3 road trips in a row. Every time Collingwood kicked a goal or did anything slightly good the bloody noise level was incredible!!

You know the game was decided in the final few minutes and could have gone either way don't you?

Anyhow, Ash has been good. He's only 22 years of age. He's only going to get better from here.

Could have either Petracca or De Goey, but Trout had bigger plans for pick 1…

Seriously, Trout and the gutless “yes” men who were too weak to stop him despite knowing how much his approach stank have so much to answer for. 2014 was probably our biggest draft disaster yet.

Needed to be our defining draft of the rebuild. Instead, it set us back a decade.

Some had the gumption to call it at the time too!!!!

Other dickheads like Joffaboy and Co came with their pitchforks and defended the club with pathetic justifications.

I probably went a bit far by saying “we overlooked the best player in the country for a fat diabetic”

But I knew at the time, as I know now - it was disastrous

I remember there were probably 10 or so regular posters here around the time when McCartin was taken in that draft and they were disappointed (some were disgusted) with the decision.

They hung around for the next few years and watched the club and the coach... and the team slowly implode, culminating in the 2018 season.

Most of them lost interest in posting on Saintsational and haven't been seen since. They probably lost interest in St Kilda and the game in general. Probably following other sport

Not fun barracking for St Kilda and watching other teams go past us because they've nailed their early picks. Why continue supporting a club that sabotages its own chances.

I hope we can have some success over the next five to ten years, otherwise I fear for the future prospects of our club. Fans and members will lose hope and lose interest.

At least you are not backwards in telling it how it really was.

No one disputes that for over a decade until this year we were hopelessly managed, staffed and coached, although Ratts was OK. It's going to take a while to recover and 2023 was a great start. Seems pointless going over all the shocking judgement calls from the past. There is no reparation mechanism for stupidity and incompetence.

I would’ve offered my left nut!!!!

Plays like Dusty, Bont, Petracca - just can’t be stopped

Big time player - big game player

He plays this season - we were top 4

Yes most of us wanted him.

And the Saints went hard to get him, but DeGoey's Manager in the end just used our offer to have the Pies give him a good deal to say.

In addition, the sad reality is that Big Fish simply do not choose to come to St Kilda.

So in this case it is not that the Saints did not want him, or try to land him. They did. DeGoey knocked us back.

Vastly different from the Petracca decision where the club stuffed up bigtime.

DeGoey was never going to come to St.Kilda. I reckon it was all a ploy from his manager to get Collingwood to fork out more to keep. Anyway, we are we bemoaning this now? I guess Harry Hindsight aka BM just wants to boast that he was right all along

The Collingwood hierarchy were embarrassed by DeGoey’s antics. He also cost them a considerable amount of money with lawyers having to deal with proceedings in the United States. Not to mention possible losses of sponsorship and members not being happy if Collingwood didn’t do something about his behaviour.

He didn’t want any clauses in his contract. Collingwood wanted to tear up his contract if he slipped up, but after he showed…again and again…what a valuable player he was in their finals campaign in 2022, the club gave in to his demands.

He was prepared to leave. He said he was genuinely considering us and it was close. I think if we made finals last year, it may have swayed him in accepting our offer.

IMO this is exactly what the club did last off-season just after the trade period.

It’s funny, last season and this season panned out very similar

I’m not sure if it makes sense that I’m a ‘Harry Hindsight’ if the who point of the thread was to suggest I was right all along??

AFL would have had DeGoey sacked if he wasn’t at Collingwood

I didn't want him, not because he couldn't play but because his off field antics were a risk to the rest of the team.

That was the case in 2022 but not this year where JDG has been better, but also we are more internally disciplined.

Imagine the rumoured drinking culture and JDG combining.

What rumoured drinking culture?

It’s not 1986

Not sure Seb Ross, Tim Membrey, Jack Steele etc are out hitting the piss.

JDG is an out and out gun!

That’s the main factor, many guns aren’t squeaky clean - then again, how many issues is he involved in this season - zero

With massive injuries we were a better team. When you have to play a raw 19 year old kid as your main key forward for 18 games (17 in the Home and Away Season) you know that you are undermanned.

9% better over the Home and Away Season. Better W/L Ratio of 1.3 rather than 1.0 in the Home and Away Season.

My view is we played better with a poorer "available" list.

Visually we played better. Though still need to improve more. We also still need to improve our list more.

From what I saw at training we also trained better.

We did, and it probably cost us a place in the finals- Ratts may still have been coach

Unless he wanted to be a leader, ala Toby Greene, I don’t suppose he would fit in ?? Or would he?

Crouch, Ross and De Goey? It doesn’t roll off the lips does it? Or maybe we’d get used to it?

We have been bitten before but if we get shy of taking chances we will never win it.

I think if we were based at the Junction, they’d bust a nut to join.

Pizza Coffee etc

I cannot ever recall a year when we did not have injuries. Indeed I cannot recall a year when every club did not have injuries.

But in 2023 our injuries were more significant.

What I meant by similarities was

At the halfway point

2022 we were 11-3
2023 we were 11-4

Both seasons fell away badly
