Re: ‘66 Norm Smith
I don't give a rats about 66, it's become an albatross,our incompetent club can't progress from it.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: ‘66 Norm Smith
Oh, so he's to blame!
Anyway, I've taken a week to respond to this thread because II had to repair an old VHS tape player (blown fuse only) and clean the heads, hook it up to my telly in the Batcave and, with white gloves on, insert my precious VHS copy of the entire match into the tape-eater and press play. All of this after ensuring the fridge was well stocked and contents at a comfortable temperature.
Anyway - we won again! Watching it confirmed my original recollections.
3. Ian Cooper. Always rose to the occasion in finals, none more evident than this one.
2. Terry Waters. A bit biased but he was always a favourite of mine, even though he played for the filth. Couldn't have done any more for his teaam.
1. Cowboy. Rough and ready, lacking polish at times but 5.4 in a Grand Final was a mighty performance.
Stewy also terrific but not as influential as his previous two finals. Doc, obviously injured, stood tall in the last quarter and reminded me why he was a true champion.

I think i'll blame the bottle of Grants, i do like the 66 win, i just wish we could win another one before i fall off the perch, could go either way at my age.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Mon 25 Sep 2023 1:33pmOh, so he's to blame!

Re: ‘66 Norm Smith
I was only 3 years old in 1966, but my Dad who was there always said to me we would not have won but for Verdun Howell.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

You, me and the real Bob Murray are deeply in need of a second flag. Re: ‘66 Norm Smith
Great a player as he was, Verdun was OK but nothing special in the big game. Tuddy towelled him up in the Second-semi kicking 7 goals. Tuddy kicked three in the GF but was kept in check by John Bingley. Bingley only played 8 senior games for the Saints but remains a St Kilda hero because of that one game.happy feet wrote: ↑Mon 25 Sep 2023 10:25pm I was only 3 years old in 1966, but my Dad who was there always said to me we would not have won but for Verdun Howell.

Re: ‘66 Norm Smith
I have to agree. I idolised Verdun Howell and his spectacular early years but definitely reaching the twilight of his career by 1966.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Tue 26 Sep 2023 12:00amGreat a player as he was, Verdun was OK but nothing special in the big game. My votes as I remember it would be:
3 Cooper
2 Stewart
1 Neale

Re: ‘66 Norm Smith
I once reminded Tuddy that Bingley's game on him was one of the reasons we won that day.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Tue 26 Sep 2023 12:00amGreat a player as he was, Verdun was OK but nothing special in the big game. tuddy was far from impressed.
Said before the first bounce he held out his hand to Bingley but Bingley responded by spitting in his face.

Bingley did an admirable job on him that day and, I am sure, went into the game with a no more Mr Niceguy mentality.
