Re: Gresham
St Kilda's first round pick 12 is expected to plunge to 15 as Gold Coast get to queue jump for 3 academy picks.
Yes they can get there academy players but Victorian clubs will miss out on their academy players.
What that means is St Kilda's second round pick will be at least 33
A start of 2nd round pick would be 21.
But those numbers will get larger as the AFL hands out free agent compensation to other clubs.
Second round compensation would be a pick in the late 30s
Beginning of second round would be a pick in lower 20s.
Even a start of third round would be in the early 40s with a middle of third round around pick 50.
It will all depend on what salary Essendon are prepared to pay Gresham.
St Kilda should match anything that is third round.

Re: Gresham
Never happen....but
Move Hill to small forward.
Coffield to wing. If he chokes swap him out.
Gresh...goneski.
You lose the speed of Hill on wing but gain silky skills of Coffield, gives Coff opportunity to get out of defense more and edge closer to midfield...IF he's ever good enough.
Hill moves into small forward role and starts smashing goals...his run will be a blessing from the wing down to the goal square. Plus he actually defends compared to Gresh.
Theres alot of opportunity to move players around... Owens, Sinclair, etc.

Re: Gresham
It's a win-win for us. We get him for the price we think he's worth, or we get a decent compensation from it.
We won't tell Essendon what we'll match so we can throw out some suggestions we will match anything. Essendon can call the bluff and bid high, but then we get the compo pick.

Josh docking and Will Nish are the top age main prospects this year. Docking, an outside mid with good foot skills, is a possibility to be picked, most likely as a rookie.mr six o'clock wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 4:29pmAre any of our Academy products being looked at ?Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 3:37pmOnly 38-42 players expected to be picked in this years draft as wellace wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 1:02pm St Kilda's first round pick 12 is expected to plunge to 15 as Gold Coast get to queue jump for 3 academy picks.

Moneyball: All the latest player movement, contract and free agency news
The latest on the Bombers attempt at a double free agency strike, North’s options if Todd Goldstein departs, how a Crow can unite with his brother and more trade news here.
Jon Ralph,Jay Clark and Glenn McFarlane
St Kilda will be prepared to match a free agency bid from Essendon on Jade Gresham depending on how much the Bombers are prepared to pay him and the compensation pick it triggers.
The Bombers are circling Gresham as well as North Melbourne stopper Ben McKay as part of a double free agency strike to help lift Essendon for next season.
The Saints are keeping their options open on Gresham to see whether a move to Essendon could deliver the Saints a second-round compensation pick.
Out-of-contract defender Nick Coffield, who finished fifth in the 2020 best and fairest but has not played a senior game over the past two seasons, has also attracted interest from Western Bulldogs.
If Coffield remains at St Kilda it would be on a considerable pay cut given his nightmare run of injuries in recent years.
Saints’ list manager Stephen Silvagni is keen to recalibrate the club’s salary cap following a series of big-money moves to attract mid-tier players and retain some high draft picks.
Gresham, 26, is one of the highest paid players at the Saints but was used in a mainly forward role this season, kicking 21 goals from 23 games.
While McKay is yet to make a decision on his future, the Saints are prepared to wait on Gresham’s future until the free agency window opens on Friday October 6.
The Bombers have about $2 million in salary cap room to spend on talent if they wish including a new key defender to bolster the defence and a ready-made livewire midfield-forward to hit the scoreboard.
Essendon coach Brad Scott is keen to explore the free agency market to add more talent at the Bombers without sacrificing their top draft pick (eight).
The Saints wanted to bank more early draft picks this year, but crashed through to the finals in the first year under Ross Lyon, meaning their first pick is further back than many expected at No. 12.
But that could fall past pick 15 due to the three stand-out academy players Gold Coast will take in the first round, shuffling clubs back in the draft order.
It means the Saints could be open to a Gresham move if it can land the club another top-25 draft choice.
The club is keen to add more top-end young talent to add to the wave of a-grade youngsters including Mattaes Phillipou, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Mitch Owens and Marcus Windhager.
AND
DOW SET TO BE ON THE MOVE
Paddy Dow seems destined to find his way to St Kilda as the Blues’ late-season charge gives them trade collateral to get back into the national draft for the second straight year.
Carlton expects Dow to find his way to St Kilda and Zac Fisher to play at Arden Street next year, with both players out of the side but having benefited from recent surges in form.

Re: Gresham
What is reported this morning in the Herald sun seems ridiculous.
Gresham to Essendon for First Round Pick
First Round pick to Essendon for Dylan Shiel
Therefore effectively Essendon get a First Rounder for nothing.
Shiel will be 31 (as of Round 1) and hasnt played a full season since 2019 !!!!!! Maybe was a good player, but certainly long past his prime.
Honestly will a 31 year old (from a different club) be part of StKildas next premiership? I would love to say 2024 is our year, but I am not a realist and would think 2025-2027 will be our peak. There are only 3 over 33 year old playing this week (Pendelbury, Ward, Zorko out of ~3 currently listed out of 180 listed players).
Take the First Rounder from the AFL and tell Essendon to F-off

I agree that when Ratts played him in various roles it wasnt successful. Most of that was due to team structure AND what appeared to be a personal matter that affected Hill.happy feet wrote: ↑Thu 21 Sep 2023 10:42pmSorry I disagree. We saw his potential running more forward in '23. Id be keen to see him receive & carry from the 50, even crumb around the goals, throw ins and kick goals. He is better defending most times than Higgins & definitely a huge improvement on Gresh's defensive efforts ( zero 1%'s, dives, smothers, 2nd efforts).

Re: Gresham
Haven't read the HS article but very much doubt we would be giving a FRP for Shiel. More likely taking over Shiel's contract, giving Ess a late pick, and Ess bumping their offer for Gresham to generate a FRP for Saints.repta wrote: ↑Fri 22 Sep 2023 10:40am What is reported this morning in the Herald sun seems ridiculous.

The big plus is another FRP (13). Shiel only steak knives.
Innovative & makes sense, but it is a Herald Sun article after all, and whether the AFL would approve is doubtful. Unlikely I think.

Re: Gresham
Ratten started Hill on a wing
Struggled to impact due to decreased fitness from previous years
Moved him to the easier position of HB where he played some good footy. Occasionally he played HF but was again inconsistent.
Hill had a HUGE pre season and got his running power back
Lyon has played Hill majority at HF some wing - he had a good season.

Re: Gresham
I think you'll find that Hill tried to make a difference before this year but time and time again he wasn't supported by Ratten game plan because Ratt's didn't seem to understand what was required - No-one was running with him and too few providing leads when he was in a tight spot, so much so that by the end of Ratt's tenure Hill's body language clearly stated he had all but given up.B.M wrote: ↑Fri 22 Sep 2023 12:11pm Ratten started Hill on a wing

Re: Gresham
I read it here:

Plus heard it on Triple M....at 8am
The fact Shiel told us to jam our 6yr, $8 million contract in 2018...makes me think he can jam it & keep sucking fumes in the vfl carpark.

Re: Gresham
If we end up with Shiel then clearly the club is still chasing mediocrity
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?
Re: Gresham
There is no way we would be handing over the 1st round compo pick for Shiel.
By taking his salary I would think a 2nd round pick at best.
Deal makes sense;
Saints
Get - 1st round pick, Shiel
Lose - Gresham, 2nd round pick and Shiels salary.
Essendon
Get - Gresham. 2nd round pick, salary dump
Lose - Shiel
To be the 1st round compo I think we have to take Shiel rather than him being the target.

Re: Gresham
Unless the deal is we don't get his salary because Essendon supposedly have a lot of room in their cap.
So if the deal was we get Shiel for Gresham and room in our cap it might make sense.
I don't agree with it as I think Shiel is not the player we want or need.
