Anyone else think this years top 6 is really set up to slide next year. Port's list is a disaster, Melbourne look cooked under Godwin, Collingwood's stars are aging and if Brisbane can't win the flag this year, you'd think the psychological impact would seriously harm they're 2024 campaign. I can see 5-6 changes to the top 8 next year.

Under RTB I only see improvement. 1 mid 1 ruck and bang

I don't disagree with your evaluations, but Port have some gun midfielders in Butters and Rozee, and Powell-Pepper is still a very good player.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 4:17pm Anyone else think this years top 6 is really set up to slide next year. Melbourne are still a tier above us, with their midfield/centreline.
Brisbane probably will win it though, and if they do they'll be tough to beat again in 2024. If they don't then sure, maybe they'll fall away, but even if they only make the grand final but don't win it, I think they'll use that as motivation to be right back up there next season.

As I said in my last post much of the same. So 8-6 depending on our draw and how the other teams go.Vortex wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 10:06amHell ya getting me excited, … and what’s your predicted ladder position?TheGreatZacsby wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 9:51amI’m predicting much of the same. Hopefully an extra win to the win - loss ratio. I see the elevation of youth. I can see NWM getting nominated for the All Australian Squad. I can see Caminiti and King taking big steps with a full preseason under RTB. I can see Mattaes Phillipou getting to work. I reckon Liam Henry, Jordan, Dow and our best available 12 draft pick all adding to our list. I see Coffield coming good. I see Hunter Clark improving his run and spread.Vortex wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 8:47amSo what ladder position are you predicting next year?TheGreatZacsby wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 12:50amNothing fraudulent… we won more games than other teams did and made finals? For those that needed it, surely now with the benefit of hindsight, even the most misty eyed fan would agree our position in the finals was fraudulent. A snow flakes chance in the summer sun was ours of progressing past GWS, let alone looking like we belonged in week 2 of the finals.
A very favourable draw and results from other games going our way helped us to a game in finals.
We need some incredible luck with recruitment and continued development of the current core if we are any chance of rising up as a legitimate top 4 side.
The only fraudulent piece I’m seeing is your shitty post and it’s attempt to drag the boys down after a semi-successful year.

Re: One advantage of 7th
Agree port's midfield is dominant; however, there defense is close to worse in the comp by my most metrics and their forward line is also very weak. Cannot see them being a competitive late finals team for a long time.samuraisaint wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 8:48pmI don't disagree with your evaluations, but Port have some gun midfielders in Butters and Rozee, and Powell-Pepper is still a very good player.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 4:17pm Anyone else think this years top 6 is really set up to slide next year. Melbourne are elite on paper; although id struggle to see how back to back straight set exists doesnt kill the clubs confidence going into next season. Max is on his last legs and May is 32 next season. Oliver and Petracca running out of time to win a flag at the G.
I dont see Brisbane beating GWS or the pies and there a 10 goal worse side than Collingwood at their best. A big GF loss or prelim loss this week sees them suffer the same fate as the 2018 pies, freo under RTB, GWS 2019 or the swans last year.
Of the others that should get better below us i see:
- GWS for obvious reasons
- The dogs, a side with a core of good young players and high recent draft picks. I think they push back into the 8 next year
- Hardwick's Suns with 3 new top 10 picks
- Swans should bounce back, still have a young list profile and midfield/forwardline
- Hawthorn have an incredibly good young midfield, lacking up forward for now but a serious danger to be a dynasty team in 3-5 years
Not sure on Freo and Essendon.

Up in Brisbane earlier this year they were up by over 7 goals half way through the 3rd and ended up winning by 33 pts
At Marvel stadium in Round 24 they beat them by 24 points. Collingwood were missing Darcy Moore and De Goey, but it was still a good win by Brisbane.
That gives them a lot of confidence and I don't buy into the MCG hoodoo
If it's Pies vs Lions I'll be tipping Lions and hoping like hell that Collingwood get the Colliwobbles

Why do we need a ruck when we currently have one that almost made the AA team?

So you don’t think we need ruckman to help Marshall?
And allow him to assist in other parts of the grd?
How dangerous would Marshall be if he could ply his trade at say.. chf ?

Re: One advantage of 7th
The pies had nothing to play for in rd 24. I can’t see any reality where Brisbane is competitive with a full strength Collingwood at the G. But I guess time will tell!Scollop wrote: ↑Thu 21 Sep 2023 6:22amBrisbane have beaten Collingwood twice this yearBrunswicksainter wrote: ↑Thu 21 Sep 2023 1:08am

Re: One advantage of 7th
I think a new ruck in the 22 would be disastrous for us. The Ryder and Marshall combo was a complete failure and worse ruck combo we have had in many years. Marshall thrives as a sole number 1. Hayes back should help out. I’d be shattered if we go out and spend on a ruck. The Fireman wrote: ↑Thu 21 Sep 2023 2:25pmSo you don’t think we need ruckman to help Marshall?

Re: One advantage of 7th
Look how getting 2 ruckman worked for Melbourne?
Anyway, when has Marshall ever played well at CHF, if such a position even exists anymore.
Like others have said, he’s a very good ruckman in career best form, so why would you move him from that position?
No need to complicate things!

Re: One advantage of 7th
Rowan Marshall is a ruckman - and a quality one at that - arguably the best in the AFL
Playing as a number 1 ruck he will have 2 runner up B&Fs and made the AA squad
Sharing the role - his output was average
2 rucks is a complete waste of time - it’s like having 2 full forwards. One becomes irrelevant!
We need Hayes to play fwd/ruck next year
Keeler thereafter

This is about right.
Caminiti is the depth in this role, but is likely to be good enough to hold his own as a true fwd.

I couldn’t agree more and that’s why he is our best midfielder.B.M wrote: ↑Thu 21 Sep 2023 9:37pm Rowan Marshall is a ruckman - and a quality one at that - arguably the best in the AFL

If Hayes can get his body right he could become the most important player in our forward setup to help while the skinny giraffes find their feet. That will also help RoMa get to more contests.
And just on giraffes, a massive year for King next year, has to have a breakout year, will no longer be able to hide behind the youth tag, needs to learn how to lead first to the ball and give second efforts and not sook it up if he can’t take a mark by stepping in from behind or to the side of a pack.

Re: One advantage of 7th
We got to 7th due to having a new coach with a strong game plan which the players mostly embraced and carried out well, though as the year went on, the opposition started to slowly nullify Lyon's game, and our lack of class across the lines showed up- especially the midfield. Next year the opposition will be on top of Lyon tactics, and we will need a lot of improvement from a lot of players- some of the younger, less experienced ones will improve but I don't think there's much left in improvement with the older guys. Hopefully our scouts will find some good classy talent out there which we can develop. I don't think we will do as well next year though- second year blues for Lyon I think.
