How long can we afford for the developing Wanganeen-Milera to be parked on a half back flank?

NWM isn’t exactly “parked” on a HBF.

He sets up rebounds and scoring opportunities, which is crucial when you’re not a clearance scoring team, as we weren’t this season.

What I do know for a fact is that, post a top 10 finish in the B&F capped off by his finals performances especially v Western Bulldogs where his intercept marking and rebound were vital in the last quarter particularly, Ratts called him in over his drop off in form in 2021 saying he "needed to work his legs" or words to that effect.

The challenge was to run lines - noting he had put on some size and lost some of the running lines ability. He had tried to re-invent himself.

To his credit Coffield addressed this challenge and was back into good shape and good form by season's end.

Leading into 2022, his pre-season presentation was stellar.

Then injuries impacted, in both 2022 and 2023, returning to the VFL side very late in the 2023 season as a running defender.

I think he got a call as an Emergency for one game, not making the final 23.

So he was not far off - given the decimated season.

Can he progress to mid-field rotations - I would suggest so.

Can he lock down a running back 6 defender, at 191cm and 82kgs, with marking and disposal skills

Anyway, I wanted him to be a winger or a mid like that young Essendon dude at the time.

I wouldn't place too much faith on the current set up and ask where he can squeeze into it. It is full of holes and flat spots.

The mid field is 'steady' lets say. How Pou got picked for 23 games blows my mind, but if they are willing to do it, I reckon they'll give Coff a go too.

I agree,,, Pou was VERY AVERAGE 80% of the games he played. Im glad we had him in there developing....but if he gets games based on merit....he should be in the vfl.

Will he be awesome? Maybe.
Its like Caminitti. I reckon he goes down, spends time in vfl, then we cut him. He has flashes of good play only when he is poorly defended.

Glad to read solid support for retaining Nick Coffield.

The question of who Coffield might replace in the current best 22+1 is irrelevant because in 2024 the selectors will start off with a blank sheet and use pre-season training performance, match simulations, intra-club games and injury lists to come up with a team for round 1.

If Nick Coffield ticks all the boxes there is no reason why he won't become the elite player he was mooted to become as a pick 7 in 2017, and showed glimpses off before his run of injuries.

I'll put on record now that if St Kilda don't give him an appropriate new contract I have not the slightest doubt that whichever club snaps him up, and he'll have plenty interested, will develop him into a bloody good unit for many years.

Sadly, we have seen many exapmples over the years where Saints players have been abandoned and come back to bite us in the bum!

We don’t want another one of those. It was obvious he’d be a player and I don’t know what the issue was. Coachability?

On Coffield, the club has invested in him and stuck with him through injury. I think it’s appropriate that we benefit next season … not some other mob who pick him up for peanuts.

In 2020 was becoming one of the AFLs best D50 Sherrin stealers. Hopefully we can retain and a fully fit Coff + Wilkie releases WM to a wing.

After already being moved from the wing, Ross has said they think NWM is a HBF. Coffield doesn’t move anywhere like Nasish.

If he does well at another club, it will most likely be in a Saint’s position that’s already been filled.

Hard to see what recruiters saw in him to be a top 10 pick. We had a real preference for drafting flankers for a number of years and he was another.

They all know what’s going on.
Surely Coff knows he can go from being flavor of the month to Jack Billings slugging it out at centre half back against Williamstown on a dark, wet, cold Sunday in mid-August quick sticks.
And his manager knows it, and all the boys eatin’ pizza together in Bali tonight know it.

So he’s a bit older now too.
He’s seen Cooper Sharman come crashing in, and then running around the oval at a Port Melbourne.

If he’s got talent, and he has, he knows he has to square things up, put his head down and play. So the big wage is a lucky break , and just a lucky break. As I am sure Brad hill now realizes.

2/ he’s got the attributes not the application or toughness

3/ he hasn’t done anything (other than his draft pick) to suggest he’s worth anything

5th in the best and fairest in his only full year in a season where we finished 6th. I reckon he’s shown something.

First round pick, showed a bit , difference here is early he had opportunity and 2020 was a great year.
Injuries hurt from there, but seems the club happy to let him walk to WB.
Webster is 30 so who fills that role in the next year or so . Ready made replacement there with good size and strong overhead.

Keep him he could play like a Blake acres roll on the ball for short stints or forward at 191cm he could take Owens HFF position when he is in the midfield
I would hate to see coff play really well for someone else after he has been out of action for so long we should keep him at 23 we could always trade him in a few years and he might be more value.

Yes, keep Nick! He and Hunter are talented young players. Just need the right development.

Skills don’t magically change mid career

Their fitness may improve, they might be given a role that suits

They might have more luck with injuries so their bodies might feel better?

They can definitely deliver more

Hunter I think is a player - but he is a poor athlete

Coffield is a confidence player - I’ve seen him perform and I’ve seen him hesitate
