Astute trading
One of the very important mechanisms to improve the list
It’s not all about the draft
Look at the finalists
Carlton - Blake Acres
Collingwood - Oleg Markov
GWS - Jesse Hogan
All cast offs, are now crucial in top 4 sides
We’ve done it well with
Mason Wood
Dylan Roberton
Tim Membrey
We really need to nab 1 possibly 2 this off season
Where are the diamonds in the rough?!

Re: Astute trading
I agree BM.
Need to get some unearthed talent. I’m going to throw one in and suggest Hugo Ralphsmith. He’s got something about him that I can’t put my finger on. It’s not just his burst speed or his goal sense but I think he has a high ceiling and could be a good player for us. Really young, bayside boy which fits our demographic. We could turn him into an inside mid.

Apparently we are interested in James Jordan from Melbourne. Free agent. Don’t know much about him

Re: Astute trading
I agree on Dow as well. I was hoping Carlton lost so Dow could have his exit meeting today and be a report that he wants to trade to the saints. Guess we have to wait another week or two.

Re: Astute trading
Interesting. He’s a premiership player. Kicks goals. Played more as a winger. I’d look into him.aussie sainter wrote: ↑Mon 18 Sep 2023 10:59am Apparently we are interested in James Jordan from Melbourne. Free agent. Don’t know much about him

Goalkicker
FFS
He’s kicked 17 goals in 57 games
Average 11.7 possessions per game in 2023
Premiership player?
There has been many a bog average footballer win an afl premiership and many a champion footballer not!
Definitely not a gauge on individual ability!!!
Wasn’t he delisted at one point by Melbourne?!

Re: Astute trading
Melbourne's list must be ripe. 4 finals losses in a row, player punch ups, a couple looking for places to hide after clangers in big moments, disproportionate salary cap money going to a handful, signs of poor teamwork under pressure, coach that must be close to despair. Buy Grundy, sell Grundy - all over the shop. I think some of their underutilised talent would like our oasis of quiet achieving. Except for the current elephant in the room.

Re: Astute trading
James Jordon with only 55% game time, still averaged just over 13 disposals this year in a strong Melbourne midfield. He's not playing as a specialist forward, probably more as a midfielder to half forward.
In 2022, with 76% game time, he averaged over 20 possessions as a 21 year old.
The main midfielders usually get around 80% plus game time. He's played third-fiddle to Petracca and Oliver (probably fourth or fifth-fiddle behind other Demon midfielders such as Viney, and Brayshaw).
There's a definite upside to him.
He has very good disposal.... and he's a running player.
We need 2 players like him - who can win their own ball ... to help out in the midfield and even to potentially replace our small, specialist forwards, who are just sitting there waiting for it (and who become liabilities in finals).

Re: Astute trading
Yes...But there were extraordinary circumstances...
"Jordon didn't feature at AFL level in his first two seasons, the second interrupted by COVID shutdowns and minimal second-tier football, and at the end of 2020 he was delisted and re-selected as a rookie as Melbourne, like other clubs, had to shuffle their lists."

Re: Astute trading
If we are pinning our improvement on a C Grade midfielder
We are in strife
He’s nowhere near as good as Billings or Jones

Re: Astute trading
When there's the choice of passing the ball to players of the calibre of Petracca, Oliver, Viney, Brayshaw, Langdon, etc... he's probably not getting the ball delivered to him as often as he would at St Kilda.
Think of it that way.
We won't be giving him 50% game time, thats for sure..
We could end up with a skilful midfielder who averages 25 possessions?

Re: Astute trading
Funny
When you ask for diamonds in the rough, a mid gets put up not getting game time because of a 3 a grade mids in front of him, it’s slapped down as a terrible idea.
It’s the very definition of a diamond in the rough
Wood was injury prone, soft and terribly inconsistent before we got him on the scrap heap
Membrey was completely unproven
Here are a few I can name
Paddy dow
Josh Sinn
Arlo Draper
Elijah hollands
Jeremy sharp
Jacob Edwards
Brandon parfitt
Oliver florent
Lewis young

I wouldn’t be surprised if stocker runs through the middle next year - may have a bit more upside with a full preseason under his belt.

Dow- worth shot for the right price
Draper - just looking at VFl stats probably a long shot
Josh Sinn - great player but a half back flanker not what we need

Someone with some actual common sense in this forum. B.M asks people to post some players than shuts down everyone who suggest a diamond in the rough. Go figure.maverick wrote: ↑Mon 18 Sep 2023 9:23pm Funny

I like these names you put up. Josh Sinn would be nice and I really like Oliver Florent. Both good players.
I’m not sold on Parfitt but could Ross transform him into a star player.

I watch a lot of Swans games and Florent can break lines but is easily the worst field kick in the Sydney sideTheGreatZacsby wrote: ↑Mon 18 Sep 2023 9:56pmSomeone with some actual common sense in this forum. My diamond in the rough is Will Brodie
Had a pretty strong 2022 with Freo then couldn’t get a game this year
Like Jordan and Melbourne, Brodie is up against a pretty strong mid field

Thought about Brodie just thought he might be a bit too slow for our midfield

No idea if Jordan is any good but the strategy I like
Cherry pick bargains from top performing midfields
At worst he doesn’t cost much and is an upgrade on Bytels run
Dow too - can’t kick we all know that but guess who leads the AFL in centre bounce clearances???? P Dow
Main job? Extraction AND has some dash
Not silly by any means

Re: Astute trading
Still no suggestions on who to trade for then Marto? Every year it’s the same story, you say everyone we are linked to is no good but have no actual suggestions on who should be recruited instead, but then when a player (who we probably had no shot at recruiting) goes to another club and shows something, you say I can’t believe we didn’t get them when available! The player has to agree to be traded to the club!
