Pass mark for 2024
Interesting to revisit this after the trades, draft and preseason but what would everyone say is a pass mark for 2024 after the year we've had in 2023, where clearly the selection decisions were being made for 2024 and beyond.
For me it's fighting for top 4, within a game at the end of the season. 15-16 wins.

Win a final.
With natural improvement from youngsters and hopefully getting King on the park more, we should be better.
Though we will have a tougher draw next year.

I think it's fairly obvious we are still a fair bit off the pace with regards to being capable of pushing into the top 4.Otiman wrote: ↑Sat 16 Sep 2023 6:07pm Interesting to revisit this after the trades, draft and preseason but what would everyone say is a pass mark for 2024 after the year we've had in 2023, where clearly the selection decisions were being made for 2024 and beyond.

If we make finals again and maybe even win a final then that would be a pass mark but I think next year we will struggle while Lyon rebuilds the list.

Re: Pass mark for 2024
I actually agree
Geezus people saying we will be too 4 challenging????
Where’s the Bont in the midfield coming from???
Sorry we will trade out sone experience (who aren’t good enough and won’t take us there) , bring in sone (hopefully) more talented kids with a higher ceiling, load up for the 2 years following imo
Lyons already said - it’s not a 1 year list revamp
We probably need to go backwards to get that top 10 DP talent we sorely need and go forwards
We can then use the war chest on a big FA year 2
North stockpiling it …they will come
Hawks have
I’m ok with that strategy as long as we pick well and it’s a list that enables us to challenge for more than 1 year… build a dynasty ….we deserve it
Guys like Dow will be an upgrade on Bytels etc so that’s good
Henry to Wing Hill back to Hf takes care of Billing’s

Re: Pass mark for 2024
Hard to predict. Between positions 6 and 16 on the ladder, every team could mount a case to say they'll play finals in 2024. We now have the most even competition since the AFL came into existence and the draw, along with njuries will determine the fate of many teams.
If our midfield doesn't improve, we could easily be leapfrogged by four or five other teams. Steele should have a much better 2024, so that will help, and Ryan and Dow (assuming he comes) will need to add something positive to the mix. Our younger guys should incrementally improve, too.
Supporters from every team could find similar reasons as why their club will improve, so there's nothing earth shattering that's changed at this stage to say we should finish higher than we did this year.
My guess is we scrape into the 8 next year or just miss out depending on injuries.

these are good points
add the crows were the best side outside the eight , poor goal kicking hurt them , fix that their in.
watched the suns reserves make the GF today, there's a team next that's packed with talent , if Hardwick can get them to preform look out .
The giants have under preformed for years , but are loaded with talent , suddenly things have clicked and they're looking really good .
We're going to need improvement in our game next year equal to this year just to be a chance of playing finals in 2024.

Re: Pass mark for 2024
Not top 4 but still competing for finals. 5-10 only because of the way Lyon’s teams are coached.
These players have more upside and potential improvement will come from:
Windhager
Philippou
Owens
NWM
Stocker
Battle
Players like Clark and Coffield live up to their potential.
New recruits like Liam Henry etc plus a surprise packet like Horton, Keeler and our early DP.
Hopefully Steele and King stay injury free.

Too soon to call. Will be waiting until at least by the time the draft is done and dusted before making any forecasts.

Re: Pass mark for 2024
I’d be happy with the same as this year.
Competitive in all games I think the only flogging was the Adelaide game.
Recruit a couple more goood players
I’d like to see us easily beat the teams we should NM & W C this year)
Don’t think we know who our best 23 are yet.
yes some others will improve also so nothing is a given

Re: Pass mark for 2024
Why will we have a tougher draw - last year we finished 10th - this year 7th - so still in the same bracket.
The Brackets are:
1 - 6
7 - 12
13 - 18
And with the natural changes in strengths/weaknesses it is impossible to determine easy/hard draws

That's why I am asking now. And is the expectation now different from Round 1?Sainternist wrote: ↑Sat 16 Sep 2023 10:39pm Too soon to call. Will be waiting until at least by the time the draft is done and dusted before making any forecasts.
I believe we will make significant changes but actually improve.

Re: Pass mark for 2024
A rejig of the midfield will not happen overnight, and it's our big weakness. I want the Saints to win a flag next season, but in reality, I have a horrible feeling that CG and possibly the Hawks might jump over us in 2024.

CG as in Cold Ghost - or GC as in Gold Coast?

We had one of the easiest, if not the easiest, draw in the comp.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Sun 17 Sep 2023 8:49amWhy will we have a tougher draw - last year we finished 10th - this year 7th - so still in the same bracket.

We played the teams that finished top 8 nine times, and teams that finished bottom 4 seven times.
I doubt we’ll be that fortunate again.

Re: Pass mark for 2024
I don’t see it as a bad thing if we drop down for a season
We are going to lose quite a few players either from the starting team or depth
We are hitting the draft
So imo we will drop down for a season
I bet we are projected by the experts to miss the 8 next season!

Re: Pass mark for 2024
Agreed on the sentiment we’ll drop out of the 8 next season. We need to build a side that can consistently play off at pointy end. The sides playing off in the preliminary finals have midfield stars & all have top end draft picks in their midfield.
We are paying the price for horrible recruiting around 2013-15. As much as I like Brad Hill, the trade of multiple picks with Acres on top was horrendous.
The strategy to hit the draft is correct & exiting out experienced players will mean some hopefully short term pain as the 18-21 year olds (Nas, Pou, Mitchito, Caminiti & Windi) are all quality. Hotton, Van Es & Keeler hopefully will join that crew.
We don’t have a Bont, Walsh, Josh Kelly, Nick Daicos type who is elite in the midfield currently.

Re: Pass mark for 2024
Where does the improvement come from to maintain our finals position?
Hopefully King plays more games.
Camaniti, Phillipou, Owens & Windhager continue to develop.
Billings, Coffield, Jones string games together and contribute.
Henry and a free agent midfielder?
Steele has an uninterrupted season.
Although we had a lot of early injuries, our best 3 players played every game, and MOST of our top ten excluding King played the majority.
When you sit in the 6-12 bracket like we do you need a good draw, few injuries and the team fully buying into the game style and if we have this I think we can play finals again.
I think we are a long way short of top 4.
Always conscious of expectations around young players and overrating them.
