Re: Marshall, Sinclair and Wilkie in 40 man AA squad
All three deserving as is NAS but unlikely they name three Saints half-backs.
Also NAS's great year largely gone un-noticed by the media.

On NWM…
The way All Australian works is you go noticed for one year (break out year), and if you back it up the following year you get a nomination. If you back it up again you get a bench or starting role. Pretty much same trajectory as Sinclair at half back. If Naz backs up his tremendous year again he should be nominated.

Re: Marshall, Sinclair and Wilkie in 40 man AA squad
I thought owens was a little unlucky to miss the 40. At various points this season he was tracking as a top 10 player according to champion data. Before injury in Sydney he was our best player. Absolutely should be in for a crack at the rising star though.

What a great achievement from all 3.
All Taken As Rookies, all with an elite skillset and all great role models for our young recruits coming through.
All 3 guys fantastic ambassadors for the footy club as is our captain who was the frontrunner.

Just picked my AA team
I have all three making it
But they’ll go sexy stars from big clubs!!!
Not who actually had the best seasons!

King Max. Can you please email Gil
Should be a sub in the team I reckon. Every year there's a player or two that's really stiff in missing out. It'd be good to have one extra get the AA jacket.
All AFL games have a sub. All finals including the Grand Final will include a sub, so why not?
... especially if it means a Saint gets the nod

Might get on a bench English is the media's darling this year, he will get the main jumper and the AA jumper is a media award basically.

Re: Marshall, Sinclair and Wilkie in 44 man AA squad
Surely Marshall gets the ruck spot. The only other rucks in the squad are Luke Jackson and Tim English, who are both incredibly lucky to be named at all.

Re: Marshall, Sinclair and Wilkie in 44 man AA squad
Tim English will get the ruck spot and he has had a great year.
Sinclair is a certainty to make it.
Roma may get a gig on the bench but I feel that Wilkie will probably miss out as he is fairly inconspicuous in what he does.

Sincs and Wilkie will make the starting 18, Marshall probably misses, unless he gets a spot on the bench

Re: Marshall, Sinclair and Wilkie in 44 man AA squad
The care factor for any of these awards, even the Brownlow, is pretty low with me.
However, FWIW, I reckon that:
Sinclair is a certainty.
Marshall is 50/50 vis-a-vis English, who had a terrific start to the season, but then faded a fair bit, along with the Dogs in general.
Wilkie can be pleased that he has made it to the squad while many other lauded defenders - most notably May and Lever - did not.
IMO the "44 person squad" (as the AFL has decided to refer to it) is pretty good, although there are few questionable selections as per usual: eg, Kyle Langford (great moustache, great goal celebrations, but is there really all that much else to him?), Joe Daniher (far too inaccurate with set shots to be ranked an elite FF in my books), Isaac Quaynor (who is a good player but who hasn't really stood out from a team of overall high achievers in any games I've seen him play) and, of course, my own personal bugbear Tom Stewart (about whom I know many won't agree with me, but whose impact on most games I have watched him play has been more evident on the stats sheet than in terms of what actually happens on the field).

And how on earth did Jeremy Cameron miss out? He’s been excellent this year.

Wilkie def deserves his spot..not bias either ..earlier I thought Darcy Moore was the best defender. I rate wilkie higher now.

Re: Marshall, Sinclair and Wilkie in 44 man AA squad
wilkie had a flat spot when we did, but started and finished the best defender in the comp imo, and certainly should be in the team. sincs a no brainer, and marshall deserves a spot, as it's his first nom i'd take a bench position - english has been very good.

Re: Marshall, Sinclair and Wilkie in 44 man AA squad
I can't go with you quite that far. Both of them are superb readers of the play. Wilkie might arguably have slightly superior skills to Moore, but Moore's superior height and strength count for a lot in a central defender playing on tall FFs. If you had to put someone on Plugger at his best, you'd pick Moore every time. The Fireman wrote: ↑Tue 29 Aug 2023 11:59am Wilkie def deserves his spot..not bias either ..earlier I thought Darcy Moore was the best defender. Of course, there is room for both of them in the same team playing slightly different roles, and that's how it might turn out with the AA side. But Moore is a cert and Sicily highly likely, and Wilkie will therefore be battling it out with Andrews, Weitering, Stewart, Blakey, etc. I'd personally pick him, but I reckon Weitering or Blakey might sneak in ahead of him.

Re: Marshall, Sinclair and Wilkie in 44 man AA squad
Yep..he went from getting double figure intercept marks ad absolutely dominating to zero intercepts in one game. They (Hawthorn??) certainly took care of him.
Then he played really well, but not with the same dominance. He was just ‘really good’ but his opponents did get a bit of hit. By the time Howard was out, he was in some questionable but necessary matchups, playing on a bigger player.
He really was a Jack of all trades towards the end and our defence looked one player short..(we were in fact with Doogs out. Shame that Tom Highmore didn’t come on. Dunno what went on there.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Re: Marshall, Sinclair and Wilkie in 44 man AA squad
fair enough but if you could just go a little further with me I reckon wilkie is tougher than Moore and you are right, they read the play so well. So i'm sticking with my assertion.meher baba wrote: ↑Tue 29 Aug 2023 12:28pmI can't go with you quite that far. Both of them are superb readers of the play. Moore leaks goals like a sieve
He’s been put to the sword half a dozen times this year.
Played a few great games - awful in some

Vol Kano
Has walloped Moore twice for not defending
Charlie Curnow took him to the cleaners
