I would be tempted to rest Matias this week.
He could be a weapon this finals series.

Re: Phillipou
If Billings gets the nod, I’d rather it be for Gresh.
I like Gresh but he makes a lot of mistakes which is fine if he kicks those clutch goals. Didn’t get the job done on Saturday in that regard.
Higgins made some mistakes too but still walked away with 2 majors.
Be interesting to see

Re: Phillipou
I would play Hayes instead of Poo. Poo to Sub.
Hayes has shown that he is a finals player.
Play him this week to see how he goes and if his touch and match conditioning is up to it. If he does not play well enough, Poo comes back in for the finals.
If Hayes does fire up he could make a huge difference to our forward line.

I think.Brisbane's defence and midfield might offer a bit more than what Hayes faced on the weekend, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Hayes get a run.

Ross Lyon is like a “second father” to Phillipou…doubt he’ll be out of the side.

Phillipou plays for the betterment of our future.
Gresham plays for the betterment of his trade value.
Billings plays for the best chance of winning now.
Protect our future & hope Gresham protects our now and his future.
Unfortunately JB will be the collateral. Pretty average for him to be labelled lazy and soft.

I’ve not yet seen him touch the footy at a centre clearance
He’s going to be a fine player
But really, if he wasn’t tagged as a high potential player and was rated on actual output- he’d be criticised
In other words
If Billings, Byrnes, Hill or Gresham were averaging 10ppg and half a goal we’d be calling for them to get dropped.
Reality is he is a high potential young player and the others are not- at least not to the same extent.
Fwiw I've seen some pretty clever deft touches and quick hands around the stoppages.
We are lucky to have him - and to get him at pick 10.
Put him in this years draft crop and he is a standout.
He is a boy playing against men - give him a proper Pre-season as an 18 yo not a 17 yo and 4 days (at 1/1/23)
What were you guys doing at 17????
he was a 17 year old when we drafted him and he was still 17 when he started preseason with the Saints last year...

Re: Phillipou
Pou is doing what the coach wants of his senior team regardless of age, and is not carrying injuries- if it was just all about blooding a young player, then Pou would have spent time at Sandy as well. If Sandy Saints such as Billings, who have more experience and plenty of skill, can't get into the senior team, then it's probably a matter of not having his body totally right in Lyon's eyes. I don't see any Saint at Sandy is knocking the door down yet- Hayes might be pushing a bit though, but that's VFL form, and I wouldn't be dropping anyone from last weeks team unless they are injured.

It is not - but were you at the top of your chosen career at 17 - or were you just getting in to it - people are expecting him to be a world beater at 18 (first preseason only just 18)Devilhead wrote: ↑Thu 24 Aug 2023 8:05amI was studying and planning for career in something other than Football .... not sure why being on an AFL LIST IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN OTHER CAREER PATHSSainter_Dad wrote: ↑Thu 24 Aug 2023 7:54amYep - you are correct - but what were you doing at 17 - WHEN HE WAS DRAFTED TO AN AFL LIST?????Devilhead wrote: ↑Wed 23 Aug 2023 1:51amHe was already 18 at 1/1/23 ..... born in 2004Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Mon 21 Aug 2023 9:20pmMore to the point - If he was born 5 days later - HE WOULD NOT EVEN BE ON AN AFL LISTnostalgicsaint wrote: ↑Mon 21 Aug 2023 8:18pmAgree re the comparison to the other players that said if my grandma had wheels she would have been a bike.B.M wrote: ↑Mon 21 Aug 2023 7:46pm Phillipou looks lost at CB

Re: Phillipou
I was calling for him to be dropped 5-6wks ago too, but clearly RTB is making sure he's gets every opportunity to be exposed to AFL footy which will also include finals.
And to the kids credit he is bobbing up at real important times and doing some freakish things, which makes me wonder just how bloody good this kid will end.

Re: Phillipou
Why do we play him now - because he’s the future?
You don’t get an AFL game because of how good you may become
You get AFL games when you are good
Selection integrity- pick the best player - here and now!
We are about to embark on a tough away game against Brisbane and then a finals game
You do not gift games in that situation
