Sorry, we have that mantle re: first round picks - Mini, Billings, McCartin, H Goddard.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Fri 04 Aug 2023 7:46am I have never wavered in my support of the Saints, but my patience will be tested if Silvagni starts rummaging through the bins at Princess Park and recruits a bunch of not good enough players, like he did at Carlton when recruiting GWS rejects.
I don’t know how much say Silvagni had with recruiting at GWS, but what cannot be disputed is the horrendous and possibly the worst use of first round picks in AFL history during his rein at the Giants.
If he recruits his son I’ll be mighty pissed off.

Sucks for sure. I heard a really odd thing once. Eddie McGuire being honest lol...he was talking about all the "failed" 1st round drafts and big trades they made in his tenure as president. They didnt have loads but he was quite insightful on the plethora of factors that are used before making a selection and the same numbers of factors that can go "wrong" making the pick a dud.SydneySainter wrote: ↑Sun 06 Aug 2023 10:23amSorry, we have that mantle re: first round picks - Mini, Billings, McCartin, H Goddard.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Fri 04 Aug 2023 7:46am I have never wavered in my support of the Saints, but my patience will be tested if Silvagni starts rummaging through the bins at Princess Park and recruits a bunch of not good enough players, like he did at Carlton when recruiting GWS rejects.

McMartin without concussions IS a force
to be reckoned...a big bodied, no fear, aggressive mark taking machine. It was a risk, but docs are still globally saying diabetes isnt a factor for elite athletes...so who could have predicted it? No one. No one. That's final.
But we have had some great pics in the 1st round as well. We have not been as fortunate as others but most teams have similar stories if you take a look.

Re: Mass exodus
Mini was pick 17
Highly credentialed junior, ok career
Hugh Goddard was pick 21 - not first round
McCartin was a huge error at pick 1 but was a top 3 player
Billings was rated top 3 - has played 150 games averaged 20ppg as a HF
Was Steve Silvagni a recruiter at GWS or list manager
A lot of people get those roles mixed up
List managers - keep the list under the cap
Recruiters - bring in talent from draft
At StK
Toce will be responsible for drafting

Re: Mass exodus
McCartin was a solid high draft pick - no doubt about it!
But Petracca was clearly number 1
He was Larke Medallist
Eastern Rangers B&F
His athletic profile was ridiculous

Re: Mass exodus
Precisely. Every club uses their first round selections on players which are highly rated at the time and some full file their hype, others exceed and some don’t live up to it.B.M wrote: ↑Sun 06 Aug 2023 10:48am Mini was pick 17

GWS - Patton was rated as the next big thing, was always going at Pick 1. Had he not kept injuring his knees, who knows?
Boyd - left after a year for a godfather contract at the Dogs. Didn’t fulfill, but was still the best player in the GF. The only forward to dominate a GF in recent memory. Try telling Dog fans he wasn’t worth it.
Kelly - say no more.
And H Goddard was taken in the first round. He was the last pick of the first round.
Bad management is bad management

Given you are a Sydney sainter, I'm surprised you are not across the recruiting of GWS in the first round.SydneySainter wrote: ↑Sun 06 Aug 2023 10:23amSorry, we have that mantle re: first round picks - Mini, Billings, McCartin, H Goddard.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Fri 04 Aug 2023 7:46am I have never wavered in my support of the Saints, but my patience will be tested if Silvagni starts rummaging through the bins at Princess Park and recruits a bunch of not good enough players, like he did at Carlton when recruiting GWS rejects.

Let's look at their 2011 - 2018 record seeing 2019 draft and onward need time.
Yes they have had some great first round picks along the journey like Greene, Kelly, Coniglio and some players have been traded and netted returns such as Adams, Treloar etc. However overall their first rounders have been horrendous with 2014 the pinnacle.
Don't feel bad for the cast off players though, most found a home at Carlton and largely stunk it up there as well.
Would hate to be the club who gets the list manager who recruited these guys to GWS, then threw them a life line to Carlton.
This guy is clearly a one trick pony, unfortunately he has a really bad trick.
2011
#1 Jon Patton 89 games
#3 Dom Tyson 13 games
#4 Will Hoskin Elliott 52 games
#5 Matt Buntine 67 games
#9 Adam Tomlinson 140 games
#10 Liam Sumner 12 games
2012
#2 Jono O’Rourke 2 games
#3 Lachie Plowman 13 games
#12 Kristian Jaksch 7 games
#14 Aiden Corr 98 games
2013
#1 Tom Boyd 9 games
#13 Cam McCarthy 21 games
2014
#4 Jarrod Pickett 0 games
#6 Caleb Marchbank 7 games
#7 Paul Ahern 0 games
#19 Pat McKenna 0 games
Yes, that is total 7 games from 3 picks #4 + #6 + #7 (let’s hope SOS wasn’t overseeing recruiting)
2015
#13 Matthew Kennedy 19 games
2016
#5 Will Setterfield 2 games
#14 Harry Perryman 79 games
2017
#11 Aiden Boner 6 games
2018
#14 Jackson Hately 14 games

Re: Mass exodus
I am 100% sure that GWS, like St Kilda, would love to have got the Bont but the fact is the Bont was not rated Top 3.
The time we did go against a rating inside the Top 3 we ignored Petracca.
It's not an exact science and the easiest job in hindsight but you can look foolish by trying to be too clever. Or spending early picks like a drunken sailor, as D.B. pointed out above.

Spot on GL, the we passed over Bont for Billings mantra has grown legs over the years as if we plucked Billings from the clouds over the proven Bont.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Sun 06 Aug 2023 12:03pm I am 100% sure that GWS, like St Kilda, would love to have got the Bont but the fact is the Bont was not rated Top 3.

Billings was rated top #3 in all mock drafts that season, Bont in some outside the top #20.
It was nothing like the McCartin over Petracca story, where we passed over the best rated player to fill a perceived weakness in key forwards with the impending retirement of Rooey.
Bont was a real smokey at #4.
Billings was also a successful pick at #3 playing 150 games.
He was no champ but no chump either.

Do we still think I’m off the mark
I think it’s clear who stays and who goes
I don’t necessarily think it’s right, but it is obvious

Re: Mass exodus
I just think that a number of players have their papers stamped
And a few players want out
And there will be at least one big surprise - and unpopular
This will be the final nail in the coffin that buries StK imo

Re: Mass exodus
Maybe the players know and it’s impacted morale, hence the patchy efforts.
I personally think Gresham, Billings and Clark probably won’t be there next season. I think the big name is Membrey. I can’t see it being Marshall or Steele.
I also think what happened at the beginning of the year was the height of arrogance and a disgrace. He may have lost some of the players.
Pathetic behaviour!

I am sure I heard this somewhere before, l don't think you were the original poster.
Can you elaborate on who this player is?

The final practical test is coming. A good coach will get us into the 8 from here by winning 2. Its ok to prepare the escape clause by repeating the side isn't good enough to be higher than 6th, but with 3 matches to go sitting 7th, % over 100, Richmond in flux, Geelong relying on Cameron and Stewart and BNE pretty sure they are going to be playing Melbourne before the start of final round and going at half pace in R24, if Ross cannot get us to stay in, he is a flop. I think he can get us over line, the alternative is too boring to contemplate. We have a gun defence, great running wingmen, good onballers and a terrific key forward to go with a crap centre bounce set up. The x factor is how much Ratts willing Ross to fail persuades the fates.

Re: Mass exodus
I don’t understand. Wasn’t there a deep and meaningful, no holding back meeting held in 2021 and then again in 2022 with the players, coaches and staff, when things weren’t going well. Is there a core group of disgruntled players, is it because of poor leadership.

Re: Mass exodus
Is this mass exodus because the players have no where left to hide? If they don't like being held to account for their performance then, thanks for your service however good, bad or indifferent it was.
Lyon is there for another 3 years after enduring a list and standard not of his making. The spotlight becomes a bit brighter now he can begin culling and letting "the cobblers cobble".
The list needs work, has for a long time. I hope every facet of the Club is on the same page. We cannot fvck this up with Tassie looming large.

What are Gresham Membrey and Clark worth?
Let's not gets distracted by what they could have been, let's be real, they are all well established AFL footballers, 2 of them are first round picks.
