Mass exodus
Is what I’m hearing
The word is
Gresham - gone
Clark - gone
Billings- gone
Coffield - gone
Jones - gone
Howard - maybe gone?
About 4 kids gone too
Adams, Allison, Connolly, Bytel
In
Dow, J Silvagni, and a buck of 3rd and 4th rounders

Re: Mass exodus
Some of those gones may well be gone at years end but it's all BS until we know the final list changes.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Of all those, Clark and Coffiled would be the disappointment for me. Picks 7and 8, both can play, both been unlucky with injury and should still make it

Re: Mass exodus
I’d be disappointed if they pulled the pin on Coffield. Great trainer and has been unlucky with injury.
The other 4 have had the rumours circulated about them for a while now. All of them regularly brought up in the conversation of are they working hard enough.
Howard I think would survive

Re: Mass exodus
I have never wavered in my support of the Saints, but my patience will be tested if Silvagni starts rummaging through the bins at Princess Park and recruits a bunch of not good enough players, like he did at Carlton when recruiting GWS rejects.
I don’t know how much say Silvagni had with recruiting at GWS, but what cannot be disputed is the horrendous and possibly the worst use of first round picks in AFL history during his rein at the Giants.
If he recruits his son I’ll be mighty pissed off.

Depends on how long a club can wait for players who have been at a club for a while, promised a bit, but are yet to reach their mythical high point. It's a cut-throat business.Banger9798 wrote: ↑Thu 03 Aug 2023 11:38pm Of all those, Clark and Coffiled would be the disappointment for me. In the “Two Pillars” we must trust.
Pretty certain from what I’ve been told SOS junior is no chance of coming to us, think about the blowback if Ross allowed that. I know it’s St Kilda but I don’t think the club could go full circus overnight.

Re: Mass exodus
Stupid post.
Jones is the only one gone for sure as his body is cooked.
Billings and Gresham have underperformed again and I won’t be sorry to see them go but for what or for whom? Depends on what we get but I can’t imagine it would be much.rtb will also Bach himself to turn them around.
Clarke wanted out last year when he was at his highest value to a desperate club so he could get a pay bump, this year his value has dropped a lot due to lack of games
Coffield will become a serviceable journeyman which every team needs. He has been Cruelled by injuries and just now getting his form back. Rtb will ge itching to get a pre season into him
Don’t know enough about the vfl form of the others to have an opinion on them

I'd be bummed about Clark and Billings, but that's about it.
Not sure 3rd and 4th round picks are going to be too exciting.

Re: Mass exodus
So we cut about 10 experienced players bring in 2 very average players including SOS's own son and 8 kids.
At least 4 of those kids will be pick 60 plus so unlikely to ever play a game and we have them for at least 2 years.
If we are so desperate to rebuild why wouldn't you try to trade out our older high end talent for draft picks.
Trading out players like Clark and Coffield makes no sense they are both talented players who could be A grade.
Right now trading Coffield will get you nothing more than late second early third round draft pick because of the injury risk.
That plan makes absolutely zero sense.
I would also be amazed if Bassett and Lyon would allow SOS to get rid of some players to make room for his own son who has only played 5 games in 2 seasons.
If Lyon allowed it he would leave Bassett little choice but to start looking elsewhere for a new coach and head recruiter.

Re: Mass exodus
Source?
FWIW, here is my opinion:
Gresham - yes, let him go and hope we get a 2nd round pick via free agency.
Clark - must keep him. fits our young core profile.
Billings- keep him. has no trade value, would be cheap to keep, good depth, let him finish as a 1 club player.
Coffield - must keep him. Will be a gun again if kept injury free. fits our young core profile.
Jones - let him go. 28 yrs old and injury prone and inconsistent with form.
Howard - trade him out. try and get a 2nd rounder. The hillbilly circus must finally end.
Membrey - I think he should make way for our young group. If we can get a 3rd rounder, then trade him out.
Crouch - must keep.
Ross - give him 1 more year but hopefully he plays in the 2's.
Paton - give him 1 more year. I still think he can make it as a lockdown back pocket.
Highmore - give him 1 more year for defensive depth.
McKenzie - tough choice but needs to be let go. Injury prone and was always a battler.
Adams - let him go.
Allison - let him go.
Connolly - let him go.
Bytel - let him go.
Dow - would only get him in as a Rookie.
J Silvagni - no thanks.

Did Clark want out last year or did we try and push him out to move up higher in the draft?
I’ve heard conflicting stories about this.

Re: Mass exodus
So we go after a second rate ball butcher in Dow. Yeah, makes plenty of sense.
Dumping Coffield after an ACL and and injury this year? I don't think they'd be that stupid

Re: Mass exodus
Notwithstanding his poor form this season, I think a lot of people are erring in writing off Gresham. He’s had multiple serious injuries since 2020, and this has been his first complete season in four years. I’d like to see him have an uninterrupted preseason because I think he has a lot of upside and has a potential X factor which is hard to replace.

Re: Mass exodus
Fair enough.
It happens.
Soooo many factors in success in any area of life.
Maybe a few of those players will rise up elsewhere just because getting cut...well it cut deep. So they change.
Others may need an atmosphere, coaching, scenery, etc that we do not provide.
Stuff happens.
We have let go or traded off players who became pretty damn decent.
We have also benefitted from other teams losing players.
Coffield & Clark will survive in my opinion.
Sad to see Allison on the list he is actually stsrting a good climb up...but, maybe too slowly and maybe he'll never get another chance.

Re: Mass exodus
If Clarke and Coff depart at the same time it will be the next chapter in the story that keeps on giving that is the story of our diabolical recruitment and list management performance over the past 2 decades.
The “Two Pillars” are about to change all of that though so blue skies ahead.

Interesting that Paddy Dow is in the Carlton side this Sunday.
Will he try and make a statement to improve his chances to be recruited by us?

Re: Mass exodus
Crikey have i just entered the North Melbourne chat room, needing to clean out as already in the cellar.
Jones - gone injuries
Gresham - FA - if Carlton silly enough to offer him a contract that gets us a second rounder then go
McKenzie - See Jones body cooked
Campbell - Gone- Ruck coach listed with Sandy
Allisson - Rookie deal
Bytel - probably will ask for trade seeking more opportunities
Connolly - Gone
That would see 6 players gone which would be enough in any year , especially a team which is likely to finish in middle bracket of teams that isn't old.
Coffield - you dont give away top 10 picks because they haven't played due to ACL and related injuries for 18 months at the age of what 22?
Clark- one of the few good ball users with time keep
Billings - seems wants to stay which is always important. Can be a solid player for us.
Paton / Highmore - Depth players which every team needs
Howard - form has been poor but which 195+ key defender is replacing him to play on the Lewis, McKay, Hawkins, King, types - as no young kid in the reserves ready or close.
