Fans biggest misses
Retro round around the corner thought I would put out to everyone to see who is willing to admit which players they got terribly wrong at the start either rated and weren't as good or didn't rate and were good.
For me didn't rate and ended up good:
Shannahan - watched first couple reserves and senior games and thought another wasted recruit. Got that one very wrong
Rated but didn't live up to it:
Damien Kitschki - good size, moved well and had 1 really good game at Windy Hill (only time i ever went there) and that was it
Dan Healy - Modern Blake Acres, Tall, smooth moving winger who was a beautiful kick. Kicked 6(?) v WC from a flank but again that was it and got shipped off to Carlton ( when they were terrible).

I can beat everyone
I honestly thought Robert Harvey just didn’t quite have it early doors
There ya go. I knew I could win something.

Re: Fans biggest misses
Arryn Siposs was a player I thought could be anything with his impressive first few games, a rising star nomination, but he only lasted for two seasons.
Jack Sinclair should be nominated by plenty here who wrote him off. I am pleased to say I wasn't one of them.
Seb Ross was a player I changed my opinion about. I wrote him off in his first year or two but pleased to say he quickly proved me wrong.

Don’t worry he is one those that rate their own intelligence very highly, he may be joking in this instance but he’s just another know it all know nothing type
Problem is , these types fill a forum with white noise in defence of their tripe
Anyway the forum is open to all
Guess I need to be more accepting, regardless

I will admit to thinking Sinclair would become nothing more than a good ordinary player.
I also thought Glen Coghlan and Daniel Healy were going to be stars of the game.

Re: Fans biggest misses
I too thought Jamie Shanahan was not up to AFL level. I was wrong. Had 11 goals kicked on him in the 1997 grand final from two different opponents, though. Must be some kind of record.
I also told a mate that I had concerns on whether Stephen Milne could translate his VFL form into the AFL.......500 goals later......
Fist time I saw Spud Frawley, he was playing on ball in a practice match at the MCG. I thought "Who's this big lump? There's no way he'll make it as a midfielder"
I watched Steven Baker in a couple of practice matches and declared that he just didn't have any feel for the game and wouldn't play senior football.
On the flip side, I declared very early that Rowan Marshall would definitely make it.
After watching his U18 highlights I declared that Luke Dunstan was a slow plodder who was unlikely to amount to anything
First time I saw Jack Steven and Nick Dal Santo play in the VFL, I said they'd be guns

I have sung his praises since day one when I thought he showed incredible potential as a rookie in a practice match.
I was still talking him up when many here and on other social media were calling for him to be dropped from the team and even the list.
Champion Data classed him as our only elite player during this time of fan skepticism.

I must admit also to thinking this about Lockett but soon changed my tune.desertsaint wrote: ↑Thu 03 Aug 2023 7:03pmtony lockett was a fat bogan that wouldn't see out a season! The Fireman wrote: ↑Thu 03 Aug 2023 5:17pm I can beat everyone

My reserved seat at Moorabbin was next Plugger's Mum and sister. It was great to get the inside info every home game there.
They would often meet up with Plugger's Dad at half- time even though his parents were separated but obviously on good terms.
They were staunch followers of the Saints and would come to games even when Plugger was injured or suspended.
I wondered at the time how they took his transfer to the Swans.

Re: Fans biggest misses
Dan McKenzie was another I admit to getting it wrong as with many others on this forum.
It is just unfortunate that he was struck down by long-term injury when he showed us what he was capable of.

Re: Fans biggest misses
I thought Gary Lofts was going to be a gun at the Saints in the late 70's. He played 60 games but didn't really set the world on fire overall.
I also thought Russell Tweeddale was going to be a great player but after 43 games with Saints and 8 with the Bulldogs his career fizzled out.
I stopped making predictions after that, too many variables as to whether they go on with it, or not.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: Fans biggest misses
I thought Daryl Cowie was going to be a gun.
Tall, mobile, good skills just couldn’t get the ball.
I thought Sincs had the skills but lacked the physicality to be a good AFL player.
I thought we’d won the Russell Greene trade after Mark Scott kicked 16 and Tony King had 400 possessions in their first match at Moorabbin.

I remember thinking that signing up Malcolm Blight was a bit of a coup.
Of course, it did sort of work out in an unexpected way.
