Re: Owens
Mitchito Owens imho is the best draft pick St Kilda have picked up since Riewoldt and Goddard and has potential to be even better than those club legends, in just his second year. He has a rare natural instinct of where the ball is and regularly places himself in a position to score.
His all round game is superior to that of most of the more senior players on the list, versatile in a range of roles including ruck contests and once he has reached maturity will be a star of the competition and Million Dollar Man!
Can Mattaes Phillipou emulate Owens?? He certainly has ambitions to be the next Bontempelli/Fyfe so if he succeeds in that endeavour that will give St Kilda a powerful duo.

Re: Owens
Your Owens and Pou point has me excited again.
Of the players over 25
Current A Grade or better
Sinclair, Steele, Marshall
B grade
Wilkie, Hill, Gresham, Billings, Higgins
U25
A grade potential
Owens, Pou, Milera, King
B Grade potential
Windhager, Camminiti, Coffield
It is possible all 15 or these players could still be playing together when those in the potential category elevate themselves.
Surround them with some more developing talent and some good money ball picks (ala M Wood) and we're contending.

Re: Owens
I think he’s a good young player
We are carrying on about him a bit though. He’s doing well for his age, is going to be a player but he isn’t tearing the comp up like Nick Daicos.

Re: Owens
Different roles but I'd argue he is having a similar level of impact.
Daicos is greatly helped by the support cast in the pies midfield.

Re: Owens
You really think he’s having the same impact as Daicos?
Daicos is Brownlow favourite and probably in the best players in the AFL
Not sure Owens is anywhere near that level?!
He’d be about 6-8th in our B&F and will get a handful of Brownlow votes.
He’d be behind
Steele, Sinclair, Marshall, Wilkie, Crouch, Hill
When rating our players
Daicos is probably the best player in the best team

Re: Owens
You are right Owens is a key position contested ball winner whereas Daicos is more an uncontested outside receiver
Different players

Impact.
Sure he may not win as many awards but his impact on our team is similar. Collingwood coming from a higher base.
Champion data have a good analysis of this which allows for positions.
This was from round 8.

The conversation is about impact. He doesn't play half back or midfield.B.M wrote: ↑Mon 10 Jul 2023 8:20pm You really think he’s having the same impact as Daicos?

He has had a huge impact in the half forward line where he is rated elite for disposals, effective disposals, contested possessions and ground ball gets in his position.
Owens is probably the best player in our team, he is limited only by the standard of delivery coming from the blokes you rate above him and clearly from his ELITE efforts highlighted above, he goes and gets his own ball.
I could use this line to criticise your opinion, but I feel that there is just no point.

Owens is also playing out of position.
Let's see how he goes when he plays in the guts full time
I think Windhager can be a really good player, I wouldn't be limiting him to a B grade ceiling

Re: Owens
Only a saints supporter (and a one eyed one at that) would suggest Owens is even in the same conversation as Daicos
I’ll give you Ashcroft and Sheezel
But obviously you haven’t watched much Collingwood… although you should have at least seen the game vs StK where Daicos had 43 and got 10 coaches votes
Let’s see at the end of the year how our master coaches rate Michito’s impact
I’d say he’d be 7/8th as it stands - behind those I mentioned
Put it this way
Sinclair is easily our best player
Daicos is easily better than Sinclair
I love the term impact - so subjective- that’s why supporters love it

Owens overall perform this year is ELITE.
You are the one who compared it to Daicos? Didn't you?
Because that's what you do. You make stupid comparisons and then use them in your own stupid argument.
Owens' output, by the very measures that decides where he ranks, statistics, indicate that he is in the top 1-10 % of all players in the comp, playing in his position. Thats his IMPACT.
Only an idiot would compare him to Daicos and say, which is better?

BM starts the conversation by mentioning the comparison, when the OP was just appreciating Mitch
Then he slams it shut by bagging all of those who entered the conversation
Let’s just appreciate what we have and enjoy his endeavours as he climbs the ranks
BTW Champion Date have both Daicos and Owens in their rolling all AA team,
BM seems to have a bit of a problem in rating Owens , and he has a history of this, he was quick to pooh pooh his potential at the start of the year

Re: Owens
Further
Owens has already polled 25 coaches votes this year (4th best Saint)
And he may well win the Rising Star
So for a player who has played half the games of N Daicos (who is undoubtedly a complete jet) he is going ok

Funny, not a word about Owens playing in the hardest position on the ground. The guy rarely fks up, or quickly makes amends if he does.
Highly creative... bordering on mesmerising at times. But also a hardnut and unrelenting worker.
His 1%ers are a delight too.
And still with much potential to tap and improvement to come.
Elite getting eliter.
The one player I'd lock away above all our others.
Been a consolation during some of our more insipid and downright ugly displays.
He's a fkn ripper.

Re: Owens
We nearly missed out on him.
"Many clubs inside the top-20 had strongly considered Owens, noting his competitiveness and his smarts – and a growth spurt in his bottom-age season, which saw him grow 15cm in little more than 12 months – among his biggest assets.
The question mark around Owens through his draft year was that, at 191cm and having displayed plenty of flexibility through his junior career, he didn't necessarily have a natural position.
It's perhaps why St Kilda's Next Generation Academy prospect fell to pick No.33 in the 2021 national draft, when he finally attracted a bid from Sydney, with the fact he was selected outside the top-20 picks enabling the Saints to win access to him."

RIVALS PONDERING PINCHING SAINTS ACADEMY GUN
St Kilda’s top academy prospect could be pinched from the Saints’ grasp, with clubs considering whether to take gun running midfielder Mitchito Owens inside the top 20, reports the Herald Sun.
Owens has surged into first-round calculations after a terrific back-end to his 2021 campaign, averaging 23.3 disposals, 5.7 marks and 3/7 inside 50s from his final three NAB League games.
The Sandringham Dragons product is tied to the Saints through the club’s Next Generation Academy program.
But the AFL has changed the in-draft NGA bidding rules for 2021, with clubs with existing links to multicultural and Indigenous Academy players unable to match bids inside the top 20 selections.

Re: Owens
Hmm
Looks like I shot Bambi!
Can’t remember bagging Owens pre season, maybe back up that statement with a bit of proof?
I was happy we got him in the draft, impressed with him last season. Obviously impressed this season.
P
Also, no mention of the post where I clearly state Mitch is a great young player. And will get better!
The comparison to Daicos was in reference to labelling Owens a star already. He may well be one day, but as it stands he is still getting there.
Daicos is an actual star - will win the Brownlow this season and is easily the best young player in the game - if not the best player.
Oh,
And on Seb Ross - he’s already achieved plenty in his career. But he’s a whipping boy, so he’s fair game.
On SS
It’s ok to dump s*** on a former captain, and dual B&F winner
But can’t possibly pour a little bit of cold water on our hottest prospect
If Owens plays 200
Wins 2 B&Fs
Makes an AA squad
Gets 50 Brownlow votes
Captains StK
He’ll be pretty happy
I hope he does more and wins a premiership

My only worry with Owens is health related. It worries me that he's already had two bad concussions. Whilst the Caminiti one was horribly unlucky, I hope that's all and he does not receive another in his career.

He is playing where he is picked and is producing ELITE ball winning stats.
He is not just doing ok for his age, he is ELITE for his position.
What the f*** has that got to do with Nick Daicos? What exactly was your reference for again. Your playing down his efforts and you're also wrong.
