Re: King - Season Over
Tall forwards with real talent and leg speed are the rarest of footballers. That's why when they're there at your pick, you take them. His body will not fully mature for another two years. Has had a rough trot and it will take some real mental toughness and a lot of support to get through this latest setback.
There are always plenty of midfielders in the draft and it's an area where you can quickly access a talented player.
Look through any AFL team's drafting in the past 20 years and see how many talented, genuinely tall and quick forwards have been selected. There aren't many. Ask any coach in the AFL what would be their number one priority and I bet you it'd be a 200cm high marking quick forward, who's also smart and creative at ground level.

Re: King - Season Over
But was built like a bulldozer and in my view the greatest key forward to play the game. There'll never be another like him. He also played his first game when he was 16 years old, so at 21 had played a lot more games than Max King

That was the excuse being used 2 years ago.
Many of the current great tall forwards were a lot more dependable at the same age.

Re: King - Season Over
In his first year or two I was always worried about King getting injured . From side on he looked like an ironing board. Even now, he's still about 8kg short of a strong AFL body.
Eric Hipwood was the same and only recently is looking like he's got a strong body.
That's the risk with these guys. They're so talented, clubs are desperate to play them even knowing their bodies are immature

Port Adelaide did it with Marshall and he ended up with a bad shoulder, too. Essendon pushed Cox too hard, too early and now he has a chronic back injury.

From Stav BF
Club expects him back for a full pre season and fully recovered too.
King has already said he wants to get back with the 1-4 years.

Re: King - Season Over
King is very fragile and may never play more than half a dozen games a year so it may be an idea to consider at trade. We seem to have a habit of picking up injury prone players while overlooking more robust choices the few that come to mind are Mc Cartin (Petraca), Coffield (Naughton) and Billings (Bontempelli) if you add Rozee instead of King to that list we would be travelling pretty well.

Re: King - Season Over
King plays in FRONT instead of behind, he does not get this injury.
Why do our forwards always expect the ball to be kicked over the defenders head so they can have an easy unopposed mark or if not marked can run in for an easy goal.
They make it so easy for intercepting defenders who know that the ball will invariably fall short or be kicked short.
I have memories of Justin Koschitske standing out back behind the pack waiving his hands in the air, here I am, here I am, ball ending up at the front of the pack.
No they can't kick 80 metres to you, Justin.
Is this to be expected of King.
If so he is worth less than $100k
PLAY IN FRONT YOU FORWARDS, stop being lazy.

Re: King - Season Over
This is what worries me about the atrocious delivery into the forward line.
Is the onus really on the midfield or are the forwards just not leading and getting to the right spots?
Or are they just too underdeveloped physically to break free from or outmuscle their opponents?
Phillipou, Owens and Caminiti are kids. King is still a beanpole. Higgins is only effective when he gains space. It's a worry.

Re: King - Season Over
What?
Like say, Oscar Allen? You know - the one who missed all of last year with feet issues? Tom Hawkins? Fat and injury prone. Hipwood? Knee. Daniher? Groins. Peter Wright? Shoulder.
Should I go on?
You’re a frikkin tool. Just shut up.

King is obviously a super talent , his shoulder is compromised and we turn on him .?
He will be a valuable asset I have no doubt

Hope Max is not in too much pain, looked like and sounds like it would really hurt.

Re: King - Season Over
It is interesting when the words, many + current + great are used in the one sentence.
"Many" suggests a least half a dozen or more
"Current" suggests still playing today
"Great" is very subjective, there's a can of worms just begging to be opened.
Fortunately for us we have FootyWire to make these comparisons of Max to these current great forwards, at the same age. Just waiting on the names.

Who is Oscar Allen? Can you think of any other the current great tall forwards? It feels like you’ve missed a fair few and only listed the spuds.

Re: King - Season Over
my question is ... did the twins play all their junior footy journey up the ranks together ?
'n if so , maybe , which ever side ends up with both of them
playing together again , gets the chocolates

So - you watch footy and contribute to a footy forum and you don't know who Oscar Allen is? Really? Yeah - righto.Vortex wrote: ↑Tue 11 Jul 2023 11:13amWho is Oscar Allen? Can you think of any other the current great tall forwards? It feels like you’ve missed a fair few and only listed the spuds.
Anyway - should we add Charlie Dixon, Todd Marshall, Mitch Georgiadis, Tom Lynch? Charlie Curnow was injured for 3 years. Mitch Lewis at Hawthorn missed the first 5 weeks with a knee. Fritsch is out for 7 weeks with a foot. Comben at North. All are peers of Max's who seem to be perennially injured. Or are they not 'current great tall forwards'?
Get in the bin. You're a flat out peanut.

Re: King - Season Over
I remember in my junior footy days playing at FF a lot, that we were continually told to lead hard to the ball carrier coming down the ground to give them a target. I think that is a problem with our forwards who seem too be standing in mud and letting their opponents run off them, plus many of our running players hold on to the ball too long while trying to find a teammate clear, and in the end, shank or bomb kicks. King is highly talented, but he needs to stop trying to out-body players who use their body much better anyway, we saw that in recent matches. He is a bean pole, but is agile and good below his knees and should not be playing a stationary role at FF- needs to be on the move.Waltzing St Kilda wrote: ↑Tue 11 Jul 2023 6:53am This is what worries me about the atrocious delivery into the forward line.

Could be back in 5 or 6 weeks.

Re: King - Season Over
The only reason he plays this season is if we are going to play finals.
If we are out of it, then give him the surgery now so he's fully fit for 2024.
