Re: Ross The Boss channeling Ronald Dale Barassi today
I think we might beat the Dees next week at Docklands.
I just think we are due a good win and they struggle at Marvel Stadium.
They have to come back from a tough game in the Alice, where the mighty big,big sound from the west of the town prevailed!
Giants supporters went off tap after the match too!

Sounds like he thinks we are disconnected and he doesn't know why . After the North game Ross's demeanour changed ..you could see it that the big battle was to come and we were in for some pain. He loves his soldiers but knows we need quite a bit more.

Re: Ross The Boss channeling Ronald Dale Barassi today
He said Sinclair went into the midfield and he was ‘significant’. The ground manager at Optus said it was a good game to watch but Ross said he would have preferred the game to be a ‘bit uglier’. Said he was a bit worried at half time…(natuarally as we all were).
Ross admitted the game plan was too defensive and they played with an extra in defense in the first half. He said we had to change that and get better support around stoppages.
He said he felt ‘we were spluttering through the midfield.’ He said the work of Marshall got us going. He talked about the leaders standing up and singled out Sinclair, Steele, Wilkie and Seb Ross.
He was going to pump up Cooper, but he held back. He stopped mid sentence. It was sort of-kind of-praising the role Sharman performed when Battle needed to subbed out, but Lyon turned it into a team effort and mentioned Windhager and Pou who were also asked to play behind the footy.
One of the Perth reporters praised Owens for his goal sense and contest work and compared Oscar Allen with Mich Owens. She was surprised how good Owens is for a second year player. RTB pointed to Owen’s Champion data ratings and said to her that he’s getting accolades in Melbourne and hinted that his value to St Kilda doesn’t go unnoticed.

Must give credit to Ross and our player leadership.
Ross said to them 'do you want the last 9 months of hard work to be a waste'? Thankfully the team responded

Re: Ross The Boss channeling Ronald Dale Barassi today
Most telling from that press conference is that clearly the coaching group don’t want “collapse back footy” where you spend all day trying to attack from defence
Lyons talked about us getting back to that push up pressure gabe we played so well early season where we managed to turn the ball over forward of centre and attack from there
What’s obvious is they are t sure why players play 1 way for 2 quarters …then another way for the last 2..
Did it yesterday
Did it against Richmond
If you look back at Ratten days we did this then too - we’d play fast free glow attack footy for a quarter or 2….then start handballing round in circles….slow builds ups…then turn it over
What the **** is between the ears of this lot??

Re: Ross The Boss channeling Ronald Dale Barassi today
You make it sound like the players go out there and choose their own game plan
Ross said they played in the first half with an extra number in defence. So he's admitting that it was at his direction.
Listen to the presser. He conceded that he needed to change that after half time.

I haven't looked again but didnt he say West Coast played with an extra back, so we evened that up? How is WC making a decision our fault?Scollop wrote: ↑Mon 03 Jul 2023 12:21pm You make it sound like the players go out there and choose their own game plan

We were supposed to hold the ball in our half? They put an extra back, we evened that up. What are you saying. He shouldn't have decided to even that up? Our players have been pretty good at finding that spare defender over the last 8 weeks?

Yeah...maybe you're right. Either way he said he had to make a change

I'm mightily impressed with Ross Lyon's candour in his press conferences, he calls it as it is, doesn't gild the lilly, delivered with good humour and invariably entertaining. Can't say that about his predecessors who were not at all articulate!
I expect this works really well in his communication with his players too.

Re: Ross The Boss channeling Ronald Dale Barassi today
Interesting his thoughts on our “spluttering” midfield and I’m glad he changed it up by throwing Sinclair in there to get some creativity and run going.
I’m not sure that is a long-term fix though as Sincs is so valuable off half back. Other options to get that spark going in midfield would include Gresham and Zak Jones once he’s match fit.
Owens you could probably build a midfield around as the main man, but it seems for the moment that he is regarded primarily as a forward. Maybe that will change over time.

I think the saints game plan is to let the other side get so many possessions they get leather poisoning and tire themselves out. Then we strike.
Well at least it seem that way.

I just had to check to see if Barassi had passed? Thought I'd have remembered that.

That is EXACTLY what he said - go listen to the presser properly and stop grabbing bits out of contextScollop wrote: ↑Mon 03 Jul 2023 12:32pmYeah...maybe you're right. He also stated he’s yet to get his head around why we play that fall back defensive style 1 quarter ….then not next
He stated unequivocally they want to get back to that early year style (I think you were liking it then….still hated Lyon…but liked winning)
Coaching and game plan when executed looks great
When not executed looks ordinary
Not at all worried bout Lyons tenure

Oh dear ….that’s the entire OPPOSITE of what he said
We stopped their free possessions (he stated it was embarrassing q2) squeezed up put pressure on then the game turned

Look I’m a fanboy but he’s always good in his presser where I’m he doesn’t hide it….just analyses pinpoint where it went right/wrong
Often makes a ton of sense and agree this time around he’s far more relaxed
Compare that to the previous rubbish dished at pressers …night and day difference

Re: Ross The Boss channeling Ronald Dale Barassi today
Oh I totally disagree
When you have a coach who can use it to send a message and who detail the game very clearly
You know you’re in good hands
When you have someone trotting out the sane cliches almost pleading with the players week in week out …can tell you plenty

Re: Ross The Boss channeling Ronald Dale Barassi today
Sending a good message would be performing consistently at a high level
Not giving excuses as to why we are not!
Press Conferences are there to appease gullible fans - it’s the most annoying and irrelevant part of their job - ask any of them.
It doesn’t help their team play better - which is all coaching is - how do I get my team to perform
