Jacob Koschitzke
I've been thinking about who we could recruit as a replacement for Dougal Howard.
Jacob Koschitzke
22 years old
1.96m - 1.98m tall
95kg weight
Out of contract and regularly in and out of the Hawks side as a forward.
Was a key position in his draft year.
Wouldn't cost much.
Would be able to join our group of youngsters.

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
I do like him.
Has been a decent forward and could slot in next to King or as a utility defender.
Pbly an upgrade on Cordy

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
Yeh thinking of slotting him in at full back on the opposition's strongest opponent (e.g. Hawkins, Daniher, etc).
Not sure if he's tall enough or strong enough. Haven't watched him play as a key defender although from memory he was playing there for the Hawks a while back.

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
Would fit in nicely, just 1 cm shorter than Justin and can play. He's only 23 and will definitely become a very good player, certainly not a list clogger and would augment the team's stock of talls which we all know is needed.

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
I dare to state that if he wasn’t J.Kossie’s cousin, he wouldn’t get posted about here and he would be another fringe player plugging away at VFL level.
Maybe as a key defender as he’s not an AFL level key forward.
No from me.

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
I've seen enough from those numbered 1-3 to not pin my hopes on them. Van Es may have a chance but it's early days. Forget about pick 40 and above based on our recruiting history.
We need to continue being competitive whilst building a core of young players to contest for a flag realistically in 2026/2027.
I think the best list strategy for this year (2023) and next year (2024) is to trade in players that are aged 20-23 yrs old, whilst also drafting the best 3 mandatory young players from the draft we can get.
Add them to this core:
Phillipou - 18 years old
Caminiti, Owens - 19 years old.
Nasiah W-M , Windhager - 20 years old.
King - 22 years old.
Stocker, Coffield - 23 years old.
Battle, H Clark - 24 years old.
Fringe: Byrnes (22 yrs), Paton (24 yrs), Higgins (24 yrs).
Then in 2025 and 2026 we go hard with free agency and trying to land big name players (preferably a top shelf mid) for a tilt at a flag.

Surname doesn't mean anything, just a bonus. He needs to be able to play. Hugh Goddard didn't work out.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Fri 30 Jun 2023 3:40pm I dare to state that if he wasn’t J.Kossie’s cousin, he wouldn’t get posted about here and he would be another fringe player plugging away at VFL level.

I would only get him in as a key back to partner up with Battle and Wilkie plays on the 3rd best forward so he can intercept mark more.

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
I think we still need to use the draft for the next 3 years but let's be realistic, with our recruiting history, we are only good for getting players within the top 10. If we rely on the draft, we are stuffed.

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
With all due respect this mentality is just wrong. Good list management is about using all avenues available to help build your list and fill the holes whilst acknowledging that neither drafting or trading is a full proof strategy.
The correctness is in making the right decisions with the draft and not paying overs for the players you want.
Let’s have a look at some of our first round draft picks in recent years on the list…
Coffield, Clark, Gresh, Billings… save for King and NWM, it’s not looking brilliant.
Meanwhile Sinclair, Wilkie and Marshall came off the rookie list
Higgins and Butler look like excellent acquisitions
Ryder was a steal. Howard has been a decent pick up
Jones and Hannebery not great
Steele, Crouch and Hill all excellent
Stocker and Cordy great value for what they are.
Go back to our last 2 power eras in 04-06 and 09-10
The low grade cast offs on the list:
Guerra
Voss
Gram
Brooks
Acland
Fiora
Callaghan
Ray
Dempster
King
Gardiner
Jones
Dawson
Some handy players there.
It’s all balance and cost
More so… if you’re looking at recruiting players, it makes sense to trade in those that have been on lists and you’ve had that extra period of observation.
Look at Membrey… clearly a player they were looking at and rated. I don’t know if Kosi is that guy but if they rate him, go for it.

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
I agree skeptic. Bottom 6 players are just as important as the top 6. You need to be working all areas of the list.
The problem comes where your list management on the fringe players starves development time on the next "middle ~12" players coming through. So you end up with a team full of bottom 6'ers.

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
100% agree.
That’s why I hate persisting with players that aren’t playing well but are kept under the guise of doing the role.
Byrnes is fast becoming that player IMO. I’d always rather take the chance on a Bytel, Peris, whoever that is playing well at Sandy and pushing for opportunity. Even if it fails, it’s better than rewarding mediocrity for no reason

Hope so, for his sake.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
Given that we are likely to pick up Dow from Carlton, I think Bytel papers are stamped. Its a shame that he is so similiar to Crouch and has been injured himself when opportunities arose. Hopefully he does get another chance somewhere, be interesting to see where he ends up?
West Coast would be a possibility?

Byrnes is 21 and is on the cusp of improvement. Worth persisting with this year and see how he looks going into 2024. Obviously has the attributes the coaches value.

Am not suggesting delist him… but an omission on form with a reward for someone else on effort wouldn’t go astray IMO

We need to time our run before the Sinclairs of the world head over the 30+ hill…
Next 2-3 years make or break cause after that it could be step back time…just as Tassie arrive sadly

Re: Jacob Koschitzke
I was surprised to see Sinclair is 28 yo, I didnt realise he was that old. He is the type of player who could play for another 5 or 6 years at a high level, but it would be nice to be challenging before we lose players like him, Steele, Wilkie etc.
