Nothing wrong with where we're at.
Tonight hurt to watch.
We are not good enough. But we knew that at the start of the year.
That said- again at times threatened to win the game with a bit of luck.
The kids will learn from the game.
Other things we learned.
Midfield exposed as not good enough and Sinclair is significantly better and more valuable off the hbf.
Hammer shown what AFL preseaons are worth as a kpp
Byrnes and Paton depth players.
Gresham we should let walk and imo drop.
Sharman is fringe and there is a reason he has been the sub.
My changes for next week.
Out: Gresham
In: Bytel or Ross

Re: Nothing wrong with where we're at.
I love how fans get on here and blame Paton, Byrnes and Sharman for the way we play
I know you’ve named other players, but I don’t think it’s fair to point the finger at the above (especially Sharman)
How about blaming the current line up in the midfield? Every week, same personnel.
It’s like banging your head against the wall and expecting a different result to a bust.
Where’s the help for Marshall in the ruck? Mix it up ffs.
Why recruit Campbell and why keep him on the least if you don’t want to at least try him. Who knows, he might help us win a game here and there

How is that any different from last year? Both times we played the Lions, we threatened to steal but just weren’t good enough and they walked away 4 or 5 goal winners.
We haven’t improved at all on last year.

Re: Nothing wrong with where we're at.
We have now accepted our fate as a bottom 8 team.
Midfield nowhere near it. Killed at stoppages.
No moving of magnets or selection will create wins, but it's not about 2023 anymore.
Need to look to 2024 right now.
Adams for Howard.
Peris for Gresham.
Highmore for Paton.
Let's find out about the next tier.

I called out the midfield before anyone else.
We have improved but the fundamental gaps in the list are still there.
6 to 12 quality list- a good off season and another rear of development then we could be a 4 to 8 lost next year, then a 3 to 6 list, then contending.

Paddy Ryder plays, we would have won at least three more games..Nevermind
Several players plateaued or declined, either relative to the comp or just ageing. That is not RTB's fault..

Re: Nothing wrong with where we're at.
Why isn’t Owens getting more midfield time? That’s the puzzling bit for me. Spent pre-season training for it, then King went down. I get that bit why he was needed forward then.Scollop wrote: ↑Fri 23 Jun 2023 11:26pm How about blaming the current line up in the midfield? Every week, same personnel.

Re: Nothing wrong with where we're at.
Our midfield woes are long standing. One paced, lacking in class, speed, and match-winning talent.
Our forward half is our best zone on the field. We had three teenagers in there for a lot of tonight (Owens, Phillipou, and Caminiti). Those guys can improve a lot from here on so I'm confident with a couple more preseasons, they'll be better equipped.
Our back half is solid, but we desperately need a 197cm+ key back with some real strength.
I think most of us rated the team in that 8 - 14 range at the start of the year, so we shouldn't be surprised that we're getting beaten by Brisbane.
I see some fatigue setting in with this group, and I think Phillipou is noticeably labouring under the weight of his first year of AFL football as the youngest player in the competition. Ideally, he should be given rest.
With Byrnes it's been a matter of diminishing returns in recent weeks. He had one to forget tonight. Does he have the sufficient class to be a long standing regular? I wish I could say yes, but the trend line is starting to worry me.
When players are not running into space to provide an option , when key forwards are standing like statues rather than leading , and when defenders lose their concentration, that smells like fatigue, both physical and mental.
Our deficiencies will take time to rectify. In the meantime we'll continue to see these types of performance
Frustrating to watch

truth is we are crap, no alleged messiah coach can fix it until the list is turned over, i wonder if Ratts laughs or boils at our predicament.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

I'd like to see a centre bounce with Marshall, Owens, Sinclair and Crouch attending, a bit more often.
Owens just wins contests.

Re: Nothing wrong with where we're at.
Phillipou is being gifted games ZERO kicks, 12 handballs, 1 tackle
It is hard to win with 17 players on the field.
Bytel has earned the right to replace him.
King needs to move away from the goal square when he does Camaniti can take over.
They must never be together.
Camaniti is good enough that he can not be left unattended.
When they both are in the same marking contest it means the forward line is not functioning.
I can no longer defend Howard, he can not hit a handball or a short kick, his only safe disposals are long kicks.
His replacement must be a trade target.
In a few years time when St Kilda gets a few top three draft picks they must take the best midfielders.
Everytime I see Richardson celebrating yet another great game by Petracca, I have to watch the video of Voss giving him a birthday present.
He did not make the call to go for McCartin, but he was derelict in quietly accepting that crap decision.

Re: Nothing wrong with where we're at.
Yep people wanted honesty …think he was
Caminiti good kid but men against boys up there
Soon as they ran out on the ground I posted that
Hawks game same thought ….Sicily rag dolled us a bit
Midfield is a mess and Howard …geezus
Marshall …not a tap ruck sadly
Anyway no stage did I think during the match we would win
It’s clear now as a side where we are and I’ve said for a long time - finals we are just making up numbers
Get the draft picks and don’t give them away
Lots we need tho
KPB
Gun mid x 2
Ruck back up
Positives:
We have sone real talent with kids must develop continue their build

Re: Nothing wrong with where we're at.
Expectations were unrealistically raised by the first 4 weeks. We all knew we were a 6-12 team before the year started, now we’re playing like one. I’m okay with that as long as I see consistent effort and a plan. This year I’m seeing that, last year I wasn’t. We’ve been in every game except Adelaide, have a system, kids coming on and weaknesses exposed. Expect significant list changes at the end of the year.

Keep being told we are playing same as last year which is rubbish
Think Montagna was right - you can see what we want to do …execution is proving more difficult and that’s personnel issues
The frustration is is over achieved early (last year too)
Lulled many into thinking we’re a genuine finalist going to hurt top sides
We aren’t
I feel we needed to hit draft hard again - we haven’t properly done that…tried the top up path ….that’s failed …
We can see with Owens Windy Pou NAS the talent can come through quick enough if you choose well
I almost wonder if next year is even a step back till we get a list with that talent who will contend
Lyon will need all his 4 years imo

Let’s be realistic
If your only selection options last night were Bytel and Sharman starting (who else you bringing in?)
That result ain’t changing
We are not good enough

Bassett on SEN this week flagged big list changes. Will obviously be subject to contract commitments but change is coming.

Re: Nothing wrong with where we're at.
What we need now and have alway needed is astute recruiting, recruiting, recruiting and to nail the draft year after year ... not coach, coach, coach.
Coach, coach, coach is indicative of stuffing up the recruiting and drafting.
We need to put more resources into recruiting ... and recruit/poach the best of the best recruiters.
That's where it's at.
