It’s better to celebrate draft steals such as Owens and guys we picked up from virtually nowhere such as Wilkie and Marshall. Phillipou and NWM also seem pretty solid choices.

Would have been good if he played in the 2009 GF but he was an emergency along with Dave Armitage, Geary and one other I can’t recall. Good player Gwilt. Would have been more versatile than DempsterMr Magic wrote: ↑Fri 16 Jun 2023 1:16pmJames Gwiltbigcarl wrote: ↑Fri 16 Jun 2023 12:36pm You win some and lose some in the draft lottery and it doesn’t help to rue missed opportunities. He wasn’t a raw skinny youngster in 09 either. GT played him in a final against Adelaide in only his second ever AFL game in 2005.
Ross Lyon had him in the team in 2008 for all our finals (from memory) but didn’t have Gwilt playing at all in finals in 2009, even though he was in the team in 2009 for 14 of the regular home and away rounds, including late games in rounds 17, 18, 19 and 21

My memory is that Gwilt really broke out in 2010 across halfback. Essentially got into Raph Clarke’s spot that year.Scollop wrote: ↑Fri 16 Jun 2023 1:49pmWould have been good if he played in the 2009 GF but he was an emergency along with Dave Armitage, Geary and one other I can’t recall. Regardless… both he and Armitage really should have been in ahead of Dempster who was nowhere near the player he would become at that stage.
Geary was an emergency you say!? I thought he was out injured. Geeez that sucks. Geary was pbly someone to at could have come in and tagged Paul Chapman and done a half decent job of it… or freed up Stevie Baker to do it

Re: How 17 clubs missed chance to snare Saints gun
Geary was really young. Gwilt wasn’t
Armo was the other player who would have relished the wet and would have been a better inclusion than Dempster, who as you say was nowhere near the player he eventually became.
Oh well… nothing much has changed… a few of us are still complaining about team selection under Ross Lyon. Lyon does a lot right, but this is an area where he is either too rigid or too stubborn. Once he falls in love with one of his players, it’s difficult to dislodge them from the team
Through injury to both Membrey and King we got to see Caminiti and Mattaes very early in 2023. Through injury to Seb and Zac and Billings we got to see Bytel and Windy in Round 1, but we couldn’t understand some of the match committee decisions between say…rounds 5 and round 11-12

Dempster was coming back from a knee reconstruction
Gwilt ended up an undersized full back and a solid player
Jack Steven was another who wasn’t picked in the GF

Good clubs win more than they lose!
Speaking of loose cannons
We did alright with Gehrig, Baker, Milne
Our culture was excellent under GT and Lyon

Only three named emergencies back then.Scollop wrote: ↑Fri 16 Jun 2023 1:49pmWould have been good if he played in the 2009 GF but he was an emergency along with Dave Armitage, Geary and one other I can’t recall.
