Interesting that Ross mentioned in the press conference that sending Windy to Warner helped swing the game.

Didn’t we keep getting told the reason he wasn’t playing in the seniors was because they wanted him to be more of an attacking mid and not a tagger?

If he can nullify the opponents best mids I say keep at it.

His game won’t win votes but I thought he was pretty good. As some pointed out… did the job on Warner in the second half and won a few hard balls. Tough as nails at the contest.

For me personally… hope he stays in and is a huge upgrade on Paton

I think it should be a horses for courses tactic.

If he tags, it would still be good if ideally he could still win his own ball. Ie 20 possessions.

He played well. I'm always confident when he has the ball. Not as dynamic as Michito but just as effective.

Already he is an accomplished stopper and I feel It’s only a matter of time before he starts racking up high-possession games as he has been doing in the VFL.

His first game back I thought he did well. His 3rd quarter was the quietest with 2 poss but otherwise it was an even game. He actually won more clearances than Steele with half the amount of centre bounce attendances. Seb Ross only had 1 more possession and the coaches seem to keep throwing him in there.

At this stage of his career I think tagging will be best value for the team…next week Shai Bolton.

I think Bolton goes forward too often for Windy to be of use.
Taranto or Prestia might be a better match up.

Rarely gets forward of the ball. Maybe this is because he had that tagging role last year. It's not a criticism, merely an observation. It's likely a confidence thing. He's still working out how to play midfield. He's got the drive, the ability to stick to a task, and the professionalism to give him every chance to grow into the role. It took Jack Steele a few years of tagging before he grew as a player and began to be a ball winner. Windhager has that toughness and the work ethic of Steele, and I'm confident he'll develop just as Steele did.

Saintmike65, I think you're right that for now his best role is as tagger. I think we tend to get impatient with young midfielders when we see others at other clubs killing it in their first and second years. However, those guys are the exception rather than the rule. It took Lenny Hayes three years of being a bit part player before blossoming into the champion he became. Goddard was a slow burn.

There are never any guarantees with young players, but I feel Windhager will ultimately make it.

Everyone needs to remember this was his first full 4 quarter AFL game of the year. He’s been sub every game since. I think he is building. The tag idea came from Lenny Hayes at home on the couch watching the footy according to Ross. Seems like Windy is Lenny’s little protege and I don’t mind that if he turns out half the player Lenny was.

The kid will build and find confidence. NWM has build into his game and so has Mitchito.

He looks bigger, heavier, slower, less agile etc... I prefer last year's model as it gave us a point of difference in the midfield. Last year, his physique was more Judd like. This year, more Crouch like. Still going to be a great player, very skillful and smart.

Jack Steele started as a tagging midfielder who was able to shut-down opposition midfielder and amass possessions.
Don't mind if Windhager follows the same path.
He did enough to keep his position for next week and he'll get better as he gets more experience.

The difficulty is that when you watch a game on TV (and listen to commentators pumping up their own tyres) you have a very limited picture of what is transpiring across the ground

So who is responsible for who and what and who is on and off the interchange replacing who

All you get is a picture of who is contesting the ball

And what commentators prattle on about, informing us by code as to how good they were

I note that Windhager was mentioned by the Coach

Same with Caminiti (at 198cm replaced late by the 193cm Sharman so, to me, not like for like except they both play forward)

The next commentary will be the précis of St Kilda listed players in the VFL viz a viz AFL ready
