I’ve played a lot of footy - never once have I been willed to perform better because of who the captain was or what they did?!

Often team maté’s inspired me with courageous acts but I didn’t care what position they had

It’s a load of s***

Extraneous motivation is fickle - players who are consistent find it within themselves

Again, I never looked for others inspiration or actions to enhance my game?! I just had a crack every time I played - sometimes form fluctuated.
At least I am sure you have played the game, unlike others who probably haven't even kicked a footy except with his/her kids down at the local park.
You got his posters on your wall still?
Weird fascination
If he’s played footy at senior level of a high standard you were a QC
I doubt it.

Without Carlisle, Ryder and Steele, who came as mercenaries, the standard would have been a whole lot lower. Seb Ross is another professional trier who leads by example, he was Captain for about as long as he was in AA contention but somehow Geary was a better choice. Then there was Newnes and Mav Weller. Make me wanna puke.
There was a huge leadership void under Richardson, who couldnt speak, other than off the script that aligned with his over extended tenure.
Everybody was hiding behind Geary because he was about the only bloke in the place committed to something other than himself.
Good post CQ
Sadly we aren’t much better now
I don’t think Steele is it tbh
Outside kids…cupboard is bare
It really shows when sides get on a roll against us we flounder

captaincy is all about respect. We are not in the playing group. We have no idea who is the most respected in that group.

so to all you self proclaimed experts
Have another beer and pretzel and punch the keyboard and enlighten us on what makes a leader. :)

There was no doubt in the world who.was the most respected leader ever until 2017. We were that f***ed after Riewoldt we tried to lure big fish with Captaincy (that's f****** pathetic) and Geary would have given it willingly and been exactly the same influence

Harvey had respect
Not a captain tho imo
Captain is more than respect it’s about leadership
It’s someone’s ability to sense the moment when that team needs a lift and who has the ability to demonstrate the behaviour to lift those around them (think Hayes 50+ out 2010 GF….nails it… or Goddard …)
Hodge Selwood Pendles Bont …all got it
We have no one who is that in our side but Steele is certainly respected
Pass the pretzels…

Are we really comparing how many kicks players got when judging their leadership?

Should the captain be the best player?

I know 3 ex saints - all of them loved Gears as captain and in some ways preferred him as captain

Geary was a great player - for quite a period one of the best lock down defenders in the AFL - and one of the first picked!

Twice on the B&F podium from a back pocket

You said GEARY and ROSS were our 2 best players. You are speaking through your ego. Geary was an average footballer, no better than Paton. He deserved his opportunity and used it to make himself a 7th in the back line who could read the play and close in quick with intent and then run around free kicking grubbers and lollipops when he did get more than 20. Paton is a whipping boy for the same reasons.

Saints fans are told be patient. Pretzels help the waiting process.
Chewing gum. Mindfulness. Do not be daunted by win/loss stats, popcorn. Humiliation at the hands of Hawthorn, chocolate. Off season, yoga. Four pillars are in place, coaches are excellent, fitness team unsurpassed, yoghurt/bercher muesli. The list will evolve, gradually churn will deliver and we will be positioned to cash in. Beer/wine/top shelf tequila/caviar/lobster/prime rib. In meantime, Pretzels and patience. Ask not what the Club can do for you..........

Spot on CQ
The OVER inflation of our players knows no bounds at St Kikda
As some on BF noted….I wouldn’t be crowing about being a superstar in St Kilda last 10 years cause we’ve seen that period be a sustained period of mediocrity
Geary was a trier at best - wouldn’t get games in top sides
Seb Ross would not get a game at Pies Port Cats Lions ..he is an ok player on his day
Actually the argument some are now putting us this:
We’ve had a mediocre midfield core for 10 years of Richo/Ratten - we shown our system when employed correctly against best sides stacks up
As all sides work each other out during the year - the defining factor on whether you can rise to that challenge and compete successfully comes down to your cattle also being able to go to that next level - we have no Horne Francis, Dursma etc our mids have reverted back to what they’ve delivered last 10 years…mediocrity
It’s not all their fault - it’s what they too have been exposed to and why we need a new era.

He was only 20/21 at that time

Probably hadn’t reached his peak

Did captain the club, bled for the club, and stopped some of the best small forwards in the game. And went forward in a final and kicked 3 vs the dogs.

I am probably as critical a saints supporter as you can get.

But I don’t criticise the ones who are proven performers

Teflon - you’re the first person on this site to accuse me of wearing rose coloured glasses?

Being negative is what I’m known for

I just back players who have got it done over a long period of time

Wilkie, Webster, Sinclair, Steele, Ross, Crouch, Marshall, Billings, Membrey, King, Gresham, Butler
Have ALL played great AFL footy at some point

Therefore I rate them - only 1 star there
Couple are close
1 potential star there

Being a major factor in AFL victories

Some have done it consistently

Ross 2016-2017
Steele 2020-2022
Butler 2020
Marshal 2019
Billings 2017/2019
Membrey 2016-2020
Crouch 2021-22
Wilkie 2020-23

All of those players have stood up and been best on ground in victories or major factors in team performances (win or lose)

That earns my respect

It’s a fair question.
A lot of players play a lot of games…
Getting it done.?
What is it?
Playing their role I suppose.
Newnes played a trillion games.
Ross has played a trillion games

Courtney Walsh played a trillion games and took a trillion wickets, but he was never gonna be as good as Curtly Ambrose.

As the West Indies went down the toilet, Courtney, despite aging, loosing pace, maintained a good disciplined effort, and due to the diabolical decline of the Windies, he became their captain. A top class bowler and a champ but just trying to illustrate. If St Kilda continued the ‘09-‘10 form, Geary would not be getting a game in ‘14-onwards..

That is my 🥨 pretzel speech.

Well done Shane Grambeau!

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Being not as good as Curtly doesn’t make Courtney a less of a bowler.

He was a champion who took 500 wkts - the first player to do so

Curtly on his day (most days) was as good a bowler that has lived.
Best I’ve seen live (with Wasim) - missed Marshall and Lillee

Courtney a consistent and reliable threat - as I said Champion
