Side v Sydney
Fair way off and realistically nothing more than a guess or discussion:
Definite out is Clark (inj)
Under Pressure from this mugs view in the stand:
- Sharman, Caminiti, Paton, Ross, Howard
Options to come in :
Owens( if passes protocol) , Cordy, Windhager, Billings, Membrey,
Reality is I see something like this :
Out: Clark, Paton, Sharman (sub)
In: Owens ( Cordy if doesn't pass protocol) , Windhager.
Sub: Billings

Think that is spot on.

Re: Side v Sydney
Like those changes and it’s about time we saw Owens and Windhager operating in tandem through the midfield.
I feel it is going to become a recurring theme over the next decade. It’s a shame it’s taken an injury to Hunter Clark to enable it.
On Billings, not sure I agree he is purely a forward-of-centre player. Can play wing or half back or as an outside mid. Look, he’s not the superstar we’d hoped he’d be, but has skills and has played some good football for St Kilda.
We could certainly do worse for a sub.

Re: Side v Sydney
I'd like to see Ross used as the sub. Reckon he'd be a great sub option, he's flexible and can play in most areas of the ground. He can be a player that comes on and has an impact.
Billings as stated above would also be a great sub option.
Using Sharman as sub was perplexing and borderline disastrous considering it was a mid that ended up getting injured.

Luke Parker didn’t get off tonight.
His one match ban stands so he misses against us.

Re: Side v Sydney
I'm a fan of Billings and his elite skills, either on a wing or half forward, but I'm convinced that our coach is obsessed with 'gut running' wings like Mason Wood, Ryan Byrnes and Brad Hill and Billings just doesn't fit his game plan. And our smallish half forwards like Butler are 'role players' which are compatible with Lyon's game plan. Unfortunately Billings doesn't appear to be compatible with Lyon's strategy.
Personally I feel the 'gut run' strategy takes a heavy toll on players and isn't sustainable across a full season, furthermore precision delivery is compromised. I'd be prepared to sacrifice a bit of 'gut run' for some quality delivery.

I don't think Windy comes in for another few weeks.
RTB flagged that he needs to work on things.
Not sure if Membrey gets named.

Wouldn’t surprise me, but from all reports he is working on things quite successfully with the Zebras. Clark out might be a factor?WellardSaint wrote: ↑Tue 30 May 2023 11:58pm I don't think Windy comes in for another few weeks.

Swans will still field 23 fully committed players and expect to win and expect us to fold.
We might field a side that is fair dinkum. Might field a side that delivers minimum contractual obligations.

Re: Side v Sydney
So they'll be missing their two best mids in Parker and Mills..
Two of their best defenders in the McCartins.
Buddy drastically out of form.
This is as good a chance as we'll get to win up there.
Time for our mids to step up.

Re: Side v Sydney
Exactly.
We are 7-4, beaten some good sides this year, we should go up there with confidence and make up for the last few weeks.
Give Windy a crack at it FFS!

Owens and Windhager MUST come in..both need to be played in the midfield.
A punt maybe needed with Membrey coming in, trouble is he never plays well against his old side!

I’m not down and out on Membrey like some but let him sprinkle his professionalism at Sandy and earn his way back into the seniors on good form.Saintmike65 wrote: ↑Wed 31 May 2023 9:35am Owens and Windhager MUST come in..both need to be played in the midfield.

He hasn’t been much chop since return and IMO needs to build his fitness and confidence

Re: Side v Sydney
Up until now I was predicting minimal changes, and was usually pretty close.
Now, I think with the bye used as a mark of the half way point of the season, we may be in for some more wholesale changes. Not necessarily reactive to recent weeks.
For example, Philippou may have been told he's playing VFL after the bye, to allow others to come in.
Our older guard may also give way to see what others can do. Don't be surprised if Oscar Adams gets a game soon.
I believe to move forward we have to play some of our best 22 at VFL level.

Not sure how you're getting that info about McCartin. Sounds to me like he'll be out for a while, listed as TBC by the club as he still has symptoms.

It's hard to know what's going on with Membrey. He can't seem to even get near it at VFL level. It's a shame because we could really use him in the firsts.Saintmike65 wrote: ↑Wed 31 May 2023 9:35am Owens and Windhager MUST come in..both need to be played in the midfield.

Re: Side v Sydney
I see Zebras also have the bye this weekend, so no chance for Windhager, Billings etc to press their claims. But maybe they’ve done enough
