This boy looks a likely lad. Pity the rules have changed.

Academy
If they’re any good - other clubs can take them
If they’re no good - we don’t list them
Interesting

Re: Josh Docking
Current academy draft rolls are ludicrous.
The AFL knee jerk reaction to Ugle- Hagen situation is insane.
If a club has a gun academy kid, good luck to them.

There should be no academies for any club, full stop.Saintmike65 wrote: ↑Sun 21 May 2023 1:13pm Current academy draft rolls are ludicrous.

Completely compromised the draft. The bottom sides should be getting the best talent.
The excuse of developing the game in places like Sydney doesn’t wash. If kids don’t want to leave home, then it’s bad luck. The development should be done by an AFL academy (similar to AIS), or just by the under 18’s/local clubs.
Father son you don’t get as many anomalies overall. Not all are a Nick Daicos or Gary Ablett.
It’s just strangely incidental that only a few clubs (Cats & Pies) that have multiple gun players from it over the years.
We get duds like Chad Davis!!

Re: Josh Docking
I thought the Academy drafting rules were back under review, some pundits were suggesting it could go back to drafting them after pick 20 ?
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: Josh Docking
The AFL changes these rules and then implements them immediately. What they should have done when they made the recent change was to say to clubs if you already have young guys in your academy then the old rules apply, but any new guys you add from this point forward, the new rules will apply to them.
That would have been much fairer. Some clubs were given huge gifts like The Bulldogs, while others later on got screwed due the change in policy. Meanwhile, interstate clubs still hold on to their priveleges
Very poor by the AFL

Re: Josh Docking
As for the father son rule. You can have had a player who served your club for 9 years and played 99 games, while the player who served for 5 years and played one more game is the only one who has the benefit of his son playing for the same team.
In recent years we've missed on Anderson and Bowey

Re: Josh Docking
From memory it used to be 50 games that qualified for father/ son..reckon that’s about right.
That’s still 3-4 years service at a club!

Re: Josh Docking
I reading something the other week about the Suns and academy prospects going first round getting enough points and wondered about that interstate clubs.
We have to wait for Collingwood to have an academy kid they want then the rules will change to suit
