St Kilda reportedly eyeing midfielder Paddy Dow

Post: # 2010488Post Scollop »

Is SOS turning us into Carlton? Didn't he try the same sort of thing when he left GWS..i.e recruiting the leftovers

I don't know much about Dow, but I do recall Greg Williams telling him he 'wasn't hard enough'. Could be a package deal with Tom DeKoning

"According to News Corp, St Kilda are seen as one club with an eye on Dow as the season progresses, with former Carlton list boss Stephen Silvagni potentially looking to pry the 63-gamer to Moorabbin."

SOS obviously rates Dow & maybe sees him as being under valued at Carlton!

Taking a look at Adelaide against us, it was the potency of their forwards which cost us the most.

Our midfield didn't help. We need to share the load there. We need 10 players to get 20 plus possessions any given week. We will get there, we just need our keys all in place.

Dow for free, with VFL/AFL profile to work with is ok. The DeKoning boy at Carton is the bigger risk. He needs to be as good as Ro.

He's been in ripping form lately and he can't crack a game. They've tried a bunch of kids and debutantes and Voss doesn't want to give Dow a run in the seniors

Perfect delisted free agent target, assuming he is delisted by Carlton at seasons end.

At worst, will cost us a spot on the list for 12-24 months at best, shows us why he was picked number 3 in the 2017 draft.

Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friends.

4th round pick. Do the deal.

Or steak knives with TDK.

Cripps, Walsh & Cerra are Carlton's cream. A bit surprised that Dow cannot crack the second layer of their midfield cake.
St Kilda need to figure out if he's better than Bytel & whether a change of scenery will work as well as it's worked for (Bram) Stocker.
Agree, TDK is the risk regarding cost re: dollars, picks, trades. I like the way his Geelong brother plays but not 100% convinced on the Carlton version.
All that said, nothing gives me more pleasure than ex Carlton players tearing it up...particularly when they wear St Kilda colours.

My Carlton mad brother in law doesn't rate him. Not a good kick and not strong in the heavy contested stuff. He's been in the system a very long time

We’re a bit light on for mids on our list, with Ross 30 and Crouch 30 in January!

Out of interest, how did he rate Stocker?

Melbourne went through a similar period where they chose the wrong highly rated youngsters...until a fateful sliding doors moment, "Hello Christian! Surprised you made it #2."

The strategy of "pick the team with the best selection of (type X) player" and recruit a player from that team and type who is on the fringe.

For other teams this might be someone like Highmore, given our solid back 6.

Is Dow a better long term option than Bytel?

Who the f*** knows unless Bytel is given a fair run at it.

Dow ticks all the boxes of fringe player that could go somewhere else and blow up.

Will be interesting to see how it goes. I like him but I really think we need to pump a run of games into Bytel by seasons end and that will/should influence that decision.

Spot on.

Hopefully SOS is not a one trick pony.
GWS cast offs at Carlton and hopefully doesn’t follow the same logic here.

The GWS recruiting at GWS during SOS’ reign was horrendous, not that I directly blame SOS, just stating the fact their early picks in that period were probably the worst in AFL history, and by a long margin in my opinion.

As much as I like Lyon's coaching, his reigns have also meant really bad drafting

Armitage over Frawley and Riewoldt
McEvoy over Dangerfield, Cyril, Harry Taylor, Rance and Callan Ward

Sure other clubs also looked them over... Still, I am struggling to think of any great picks other than Jack Steven as a late pick when he was likely to go as a higher pick the following year.

To top it off, Lyon saddled saints with a burnt out Trout as the recruiting chief who proceeded to lead a disastrous recruiting record. So, I've got little hope from SOS. Hammer is a great pick. Not sold on stocker as a solid top 22 player...

It's a st kilda thing also, how many rejects have we taken over the last ten years....here we go again

We need an "A" grade midfielder not another proven average joe

It appears Jack Silvagni is out of favor now...

Both are 23 years old.

I'm sure there is room on the list for both of them.

Given the number players we could feasibly cut a player like Dow is not a bad one to have rolling around in the twos.

Ross and Crouch aren't going either.

Out of contract players he could replace on our list.

Jones (inj)
McKenzie (inj)
Campbell (heath a year older and Hayes etc back)
Peris (harsh)
Highmore (harsh)

If we re-signed the rest. Got TDK and Dow + 3 draft picks I'd be pretty happy with the off-season.

Ideally we do better than that but as a worst case outcome I'd take it.

They can’t be f****** serious, he can’t get a game in one of the slowest midfields in the competition!!!

WE NEED AN OUTSIDE MID WITH SPEED AND ELITE DISPOSAL, Dow has none of that.

Are the coaches looking at the future?
Keeping Bytel and Windy in the VFL as they know they're long-term players and are definitely the future, but some of the guys in the seniors are kept in as a test, to see whether they can cut it?
And some will be told in exit interviews that they were given every chance but don't fit our plans?

Just a thought.
I don't believe Hayes would keep some of our mids when they're underperforming.
Boris wouldn't persist with Paton unless he's wanting to see whether he's best 22.
Think about comments by tony about Windy in the VFL.
Whoever is keeping him out, is being given every chance to perform on the big stage, until the last round...

Dow would have looked like Bobby Skilton amongst our midfield today.
