Re: Side v Hawthorn
May I ask why many feel we should rest Phillipou and play Campbell? It has been a view of some for a few weeks.
Phillipou makes a significant enough contribution and is always capable of doing something extraordinary.
Why lose run to bring in a second ruckman to relieve Marshall for 5 minutes a quarter?

Agree re Campbell, not convinced 2 rucks works unless both can also play forward properly which Campbell cannot. I like the way they are playing Heath forward a lot at Sandy as teaches him forward craft as need both strings. The G Train Legacy wrote: ↑Tue 23 May 2023 3:13pm May I ask why many feel we should rest Phillipou and play Campbell? Pou looked fatigue v Adelaide sides and i thought needed a rest , but was in and at it with a low possession game in the weekend. The bye the week after next let him play .

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Campbell's tap work exceeds Marshall's. Marshall is a gun around the ground and in contests, but for hit outs to advantage, Campbell is your man.
I did notice that Marshall had some more length on his taps this week against GWS, which is a good sign.
The problem with Campbell is his ability to impact the game when it's not a ruck contest, which reportedly he is doing well with improving at VFL level.

Re: Side v Hawthorn
As scollop I think pointed out in another thread, Marshall also averages something like 5 clearances, himself, which I think trump hitouts to advantage.

The only thing I can say/ask is about potential burnout injury to Marshall. If Campbell gets a run, and is half decent, at least we know if we have a proven backup to ease or potentially (heaven forbid) replace Marshall in a squeeze.

A lady on twitter with 45+ yrs membership, who goes to almost every game, flies interstate for away games too...
Was at the game and watched VFL game.
Her comments about JB were:
'Looked like the old JB tbf (to be fair)
Corky aside, didn't go in, ran half-paced,
didn't look like he wanted it'
Don't presume she's biased against JB from her first line.
She gets angry at other tweeters who criticise the club, players, officials, etc.
She's committed to the club.

Bytel got more of the ball in the VFL, but I believe Windhager would bring more to the AFL side.
Out: Ross & Owens
Ins: Membrey, Windhager
Sub Paton.
Another poster somewhere, said Highmore kicked into the corridor 3 times to a Giant on his own, which resulted in a goal.
Is that right?

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Marshall sometimes takes the ball himself out of ball-ups and kicks, which teams have set up for- they put guys at the distance the ball will go.
Not sure why we don't do that too

Re: Side v Hawthorn
What effect will this have on the Hawks? None, or some?
The Age is reporting that a Hawks Chief Exec (not sure if CEO, COO CFO) Justin Reeves has resigned 'amid the racist investigation'
OMG typical of the Age to conflate the 2 things, or link the quitting to the inquiry.
Anyway...

That is why he resigned isn't it? He cited the reason being the toll taken on him by the enquiry.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Wed 24 May 2023 5:13pm What effect will this have on the Hawks? None, or some?

Re: Side v Hawthorn
I'd prefer hitouts to advantage, especially Ryder hitouts to advantage. Not really ROMA's forte. Sometimes a ruckman just has to grab it and dump a kick, it's then at best a 50:50 ball, less if he's dumping it out of defence where the opposition sits outside the 50.
He's good at it, not knocking him, but he would be more a complete player if he improved his hitouts.

Always must have a back up (competent) ruckman. If they're not competent, then why are they on the playing list!

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Owens does a great job giving Roma a chop out but with Hayes injured Campbell would be our only option as Corey is not up to it and Heath has a long way to go. If there is an upgrade on Campbell in the mid season draft move Jones to the LTI list and go for it.

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Sometimes the saints keep a few emergency aside for the main game could they play in the VFL with the sub from the AFL side.
The VFL is at RESA park on Saturday night 5pm it would be good for all the Emergency's to play in that game as many haven't played for a while.

But his time in the vfl has pretty good, better than a few others in the seniors.
But at present theres no hope for FB to break into the senoirs unless theres injury.
When RTB locks into a player he loves them despite how much we may disagree...I dont need to list the players he ran weekly that some consider may even have cost us flags.

There's others who had a ? on them from lots of us, I think he hasn't learnt from those 'mistakes' (in my opinion)
I'm not a coach, but I wonder why Lenny/Harves/Boris haven't talked him out of it

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Pick the best players implies you pick ‘best 22’ if they are available and not injured, BUT… what happens when they have 2-3 ordinary or sub standard performances?
I say pick the players who are in the best form and have some standards and have some selection integrity.
If you are insinuating that Jack Billings should be in this team, then I’d also add, he’s not going to be turning the Saints into a top 4 team

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Lost on the ground in too many positions - if it was lost at selection then I hope those who played today in the seniors are traded or retired at year's end.
