Side v Hawthorn
in what is a danger game, but shouldn't be this week:
Out: Owens, Ross (rest)
In: Membrey (if fit - Cordy if not), Bytel
Some will say crouch, which i just don't get.
Phillpou is another who could pop up, however while appearing quiet had 6 tackles, i think 5 to half time, which for a first year player who is skilled i love as it shows when he isn't getting heaps of the ball he is working hard in many other areas.

- Windhager to come in ahead of Billings
- Pou to stay in the side and Billings to spend another week in the VFL or Paton to miss

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Out Owens, Byrnes, Paton (sub)
In Membrey, Bytel, Windhager (toss a coin as to which of Bytel and Windhager plays and which gets the sub role)
Membrey will need to deliver, as there won't be room for him in the forward line when Owens comes back after the bye.
Byrnes has been ok, but to me he is still on the cusp of AFL/VFL quality. However he works hard and runs very hard and far, so he's the sort of player of whom Lyon tends to be a bit overly fond.
The club might be tempted to give Billings a run against the Hawks rather than one of Bytel or Windhager, as the SCG (where we play first game after the bye) might suit him. But Billings appears to be on the outer with the current regime.
I can't see anybody being rested: TBH, I don't really get the idea unless we are looking at something like a 5 day turnaround after a trip to Perth. Everyone is going to get a rest after the Hawks.

I have a feeling Tim Membrey is going to have a cracker this week.

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Membrey for Owens a given.
I still don't understand how Billings isn't in the team, he's wasting away in the 2s.

It will be interesting to see how the combination of King, Membrey and Caminiti works.
Think of me long enough to make a memory.

Re: Side v Hawthorn
they've been very reluctant to make wholesale changes despite the gnashing of teeth on Seb/Crouch/Pou/Paton/<insert name here of player who should be dropped>. So unless someone pulls up sore, the smart money is for just the one change you've listed above

As the Coach (and no doubt all Coaches) inform, there are no easy games in the AFL.
GWS was an expected win, but they had Hogan (traded from Melbourne), Greene, Coniglio, Kelly, Green and Whitfield in their starting 22.
All experienced, well established players with class.
Yes, they lead a younger side.
But St Kilda are in the same position with Sinclair, Crouch, Hill, Ross, Steele and Webster as our experienced, well established players.
So who would you prefer as your 6 experienced, well established players versus GWS?
This is the competition.
Because I think many would take the GWS half dozen as the start point.

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Owens out is a real problem, he’s both a forward threat and a reliable 2nd ruck none of ins mentioned help in the ruck. I think the only player currently in the side who’s played that role is Battle. Maybe we can lose him occasionally againist hawthorns forward line. Dunno what does everyone think ?

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Hopefully Membrey is fit to return.
Bytel got more of the ball in the VFL, but I believe Windhager would bring more to the AFL side.
Out: Ross & Owens
Ins: Membrey, Windhager
Sub Paton.

I watched the whole game. Bytel and Highmore were impressive. Windy, unfortunately for him, was not.Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Mon 22 May 2023 6:48pm Hopefully Membrey is fit to return.

Re: Side v Hawthorn
The supporters backlash over Windy’s non selection on the weekend is puzzling.
He played one good game in the VFL but needed to back it up!
Under previous coaches players had too easier passage back in the seniors..now they’ve got to earn it!

Good lad...all that stuff.
Hayes, Battle also in that club.
I don't think they will make many changes.
The midfield is mediocre but that is all we have.
They keep having a crack, that is all we can ask.
Ross had 12 possies last week, but is Bytel any better?
If Tom Highmore can do any better, anywhere else, and if I were his manager, I would be shopping him around. 29 last week again, but no place.
Ross Lyon bagged Stocker in the presser, so that means he is a keeper.
When he gives wraps to Cordy, before dropping him, you get a clue.
Paton and Byrnes have a go, and again, what more can we ask?
Pou and Cam will be patchy and can the team carry that? I guess so, as long as their attitude is 100% on the ball.
Maybe Billings can have a crack. Surely, this is his best chance, against lowly Hawthorn* going into the bye. (*beware, after a 116 point victory and coach under the pump, anything could happen)
We might see this as an 'investment game' ..where we try to give the kids with skills a bit more chance, rather than the battlers. But someone like Ross, whilst mediocre is also pretty fit and a consummate pro, so it is not as if he is buggered and needs a rest. So any chance Pou could be given a mid role and Ross rested might not happen.
Ross will probably get 40 possies now!
Membrey - will be given another chance. Not as if he was playing badly at the end of last season. Wasn't great, never great, but good.
So in conclusion.
I think they'll pick Membrey, continue with Ross and Crouch
Drop Paton and try Billings
Keep Highmore in the seconds sadly.
Likewise Windy.
Pou is lucky to be getting games but talent will get him a few more free passes.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Re: Side v Hawthorn
At the start of the GWS game Owens was in the middle and looked dangerous. He's one of our more exciting options in there going forward.
Also the second half it looked like Steele was getting his mojo back a bit.
And then there's Sincs.
Hawthorn's midfield is very average so shouldn't be an issue this week, but going forward we need to get a bit more dynamism in the middle.
