Young saints need more goal kicking practise.

Post: # 2010111Post saynta »

ST KILDA 3.3 8.3 11.7 13.14 (92)
GWS 4.1 8.3 11.4 12.8 (80)

So after half time the saints kicked 5. 11 after kicking only 3 points in the first half with 8 majors.

Not good enough guys as it could have cost you the match.

It’s like putting in golf, which is almost half the game.

You can be fabulous tee to green and still rack up a cricket score.

All you can do is train it and trust it stands up under pressure. Set shots I mean. Snaps are a little different

One of my major criticisms of Byrnes - cannot get the ball through the big sticks - has 2.4 this year which sounds better than my perception of it

Yestarday a really good example - the game was over - we had won, there was a crowd of about 9000 in the house - mostly pretty quiet - and he misses from a set shot 30 metres out with not much angle - that certainly seemed to back up what I have been thinking all year when it comes to his finishing in front of goal

None of our forwards are reliable set shots!

Owens, Butler, Byrnes all missed very simple set shots.

Gresham from 50 in the last was never going to happen, not sure why he didn't kick to the top of the square.

Clark and NWM from 50 in the last both didn't look confident at all, no surprise with the result.

Another shocker tho was Pou not running right in to goal in the last and sealing the game.

On a positive note, King looked to be kicking very well on his return! (Also Higgins)

He didn't just miss. He didn't even come close. From 40m out and no angle to speak of. Can be coach killers.

My take

Gettable Goals:
~ GWS could've scored an additional 4 goals

~ SAINTS could've scored an additional 8 goals

Gresham is either very selfish or not very smart, some of his attempts at goal are very low percentage !
Have they tried coaching it out of him?

I reckon he had Higgo on for the handball, too.

When Byrnes shoots for goal, I don't have much confidence that he'll ever kick the goal to be honest.
Billings is somewhat similar when it comes to set shots, but on the run, hes fine.

Membrey was a dead eye, then lost it one season, then regained it back a bit

They certainly practice goal kicking a lot.

As I've been banging on in the past month, efficiency once the ball is inside the forward 50 is the main reason St Kilda has lost its mojo in recent games.

Against the Giants the team once again failed to take their chances, just 28 shots on goal from a massive 59 entries into the forward 50 - 48%.

In the 10 rounds played the team has only managed 50% twice - against Essendon and Gold Coast.

It certainly is nowhere near good enough!

I am not suggesting that this is the only stat that's important because despite the poor conversion rate St Kilda have won 7 from 10. For example in the round 1 win over Fremantle it was 20 from 65 or 31%!!

However, overall ever since the 7 point loss to Port Adelaide in round 7 the team has played poorly and I contend that if they had done better in attack that would have lessened the pressure elsewhere on the ground. Scoreboard pressure is a big factor because it causes opposition teams to take greater risks with the ball which plays into the hands of the team that's leading.

They certainly practise doing it wrong. With Ryan Byrnes his problem is obvious. He is unable to switch from being a rushed kick in play to a concentrated kick with 30 seconds to kick. He has no focal point before kicking or at the point of impact, which is why the kick can, and usually does, go anywhere. Such issues should be addressed in goal kicking practice with coaches present. Leaving a person to his own devices is simply rewarding bad technique.

Don't we have a new goal kicking coach to address our kicking for goal problem.
It might take a while before this comes to fruition lest hope not.
