Incompetent North footy department screws Ratten
Down by 16 points in the last quarter and Swans scored 2 goals.
They were coming hard but time was running out.
With 1 minute to go and Sydney deep in their forward line, the umpire got word in his ear that North had made 76 interchanges. The breach means an instant free kick and 50 m penalty

Sure it wasn't rigged .
I haven't followed the match in any way but I'm 100% certain that the AFL would have wanted a Sydney victory today. Especially with buddy kicking goals .
How many frees did he get ?

Re: Incompetent North footy department screws Ratten
Personally, I don't know enough about how the interchange system is managed to understand what happened.
Is the official count of the number of interchanges shared with the relevant team, or does the team do its own count and hope to hell it's the same as the official one?
I have never understood the grounds for there being a limit: if the AFL was so concerned about the number of interchanges, why do they allow 4 players on the bench rather than 3 or 2? Especially now there is also a sub available.

No doubt many journalists, fans, club officials and AFL officials will be making a forensic examination of the match video to see how many interchanges North Melbourne actually made. I'll be interested to hear what they find.mr six o'clock wrote: ↑Sat 20 May 2023 5:45pm Sure it wasn't rigged .

How truly bad must the Swans be this year to give up 15 goals to North though?

Re: Incompetent North footy department screws Ratten
Aah, come on mate, they kicked their lowest score in a half of football since the 1970s in that game and we won easily without ever being seriously challenged. Conceding almost a hundred points to North is seriously poor. North had a vastly stronger team in when they played us too. Chalk and cheese. The Swans were one incompetent decision away from losing that game. We also didn't have our forward line in that day, while they had their COLA full forward front and centre. The Fireman wrote: ↑Sat 20 May 2023 5:59pmWe didn’t look too flash against North eithersamuraisaint wrote: ↑Sat 20 May 2023 5:52pmThat was unforgivable today. An idealist.
It’s 18th versus 17th, not 18th versus top 4.
No incentive to finish 17th whatsoever, especially with what’s on offer this season.

Re: Incompetent North footy department screws Ratten
Piecing together what happened from various online sources, it appears that the number of interchanges is controlled by stewards appointed by the AFL. Presumably they normally tell the club officials on the bench when the 75th interchange has been made. But in this game, the Roos were one short of the limit and then did a double interchange, which denied the steward the opportunity of informing the club that it couldn't make any more interchanges.
Curiously, it's not clear from the rules - at least as I read them - that the appropriate penalty for a breach of the cap is a free kick plus a 50 metre penalty. I guess all of this is going to be discussed ad nauseum over the coming few days.

Sounds like the process is clear as mud.
Sounds like a pathetic system.
If that’s their system, christ, the AFL is incompetent.

Re: Incompetent North footy department screws Ratten
Further update: I should have consulted the AFL's regulations, which appear to be a supplement to the "Laws of the Game." In the regulations, it is clear that the penalty for a breach of the interchange cap is a free kick plus 50 metres.
However, the precise role of the interchage stewards vis-a-vis the clubs in terms of keeping track of the number of interchanges is not clearly specified anywhere.

The timing of the free kick will be interesting. How long between the infringement and the free kick? Where was the ball at the time of the infringement?

Warning them at the 75 mark was always going to be problematic as the AFL clearly think it’s the club’s responsibility which is probably fair enough.
Clubs need to be on to this and keep track themselves.

Exactly...It's passing the buck. The North Footy department are incompetent
I hope our Footy Department doesn't rely on an AFL official for something as serious as interchange numbers

Don't know. Appears AFL has stopped recording individual frees for and against. Match was 16 to Roos and 24 to Swine.mr six o'clock wrote: ↑Sat 20 May 2023 5:45pm Sure it wasn't rigged .

How many frees did he get ?
The maggots evened up a bit after half time when the Roos got a run on.
After the interchange f*** up the Roos still had a chance to win the game.
A Roo was streaming forward until a maggot blew his whistle , stopped him in his tracks and awarded a dubious free to a swan player. Game set and match.
The Roos were gallant in defeat though, but in the end the best team lost.
I suppose the maggots got to collect on their bets .

Re: Incompetent North footy department screws Ratten
It appears it took a certain amount of time from the infringement to reach the umpires ear.......30 -40 secondsmeher baba wrote: ↑Sat 20 May 2023 6:53pmFurther update: I should have consulted the AFL's regulations, which appear to be a supplement to the "Laws of the Game." If the infringement occurred with 20 sec to go but game completed siren gone umpire arms up etc ..
Then ump told of infringement..
What happens then??..
Game already signalled as officially finished
