Adelaide Preview Thread.
Very interesting week.
In the selection conversation
Billings, Bytel, Windhager, Hammer, Webster
Under pressure:
Gresham, Paton, Membrey, Sharman, Pou
My side
Paton Howard Wilkie
Stocker Battle NWM
Wood Sinclair Byrnes
Higgins Membrey Hill
Owens King Butler
F: Marshall Steele Crouch
Int: Clark, Sharman, Ross, Pou
Sub: Billings
In: King
Out: Gresham
We are not an overly tall side so the omission of Gresham for King doesn't make us too tall, it also sends a message to the rest of the team about buy in and standards.
Sharmans running capacity and versatility see him stay in the side.
Membrey gets one more week in a forward line with more aerial support, he is a class player and backing him to deliver.
Assuming no injuries I'd eventually expect Pou to move to the Sub role.

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
I would play Campbell - Reilly O'Brian is having a great year, plays as a conventional ruck and is a key in their midfield clearances. Tom will bother him physically more than RoMa, the latter finished the game with ice on an ankle - another reason perhaps.

I don't have good feelings about this one.
Don't like Adelaide, don't like playing in Adelaide, could get ugly.
If anyone possibly needs a rest I'd give it to them this week and aim to be cherry ripe for GWS the following game.

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
I want “Kid Caminiti” and King in to give us two key position-sized forwards for the first time in a long time.
Also this would release Michito to midfield, where he will become a big star.
I’d keep one of Membrey or Sharman probably. Membrey has been a good player for a long time, so probably has some credits in n the bank. But Sharman was reasonably impressive.
Webster for Paton is a no-brainer if Jimmy is fit.
Billings in for Gresham if Gresham is injured.

Paton out for Webster.
Jimmy just edges Paton out in terms of his attack on the man with the ball.
Paton is a bit better than Web in some things, but overall, JWeb brings more

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
I think the Crows have lost a key position defender for this week so if King is fit and available, put him on the plane. If not, then I would get Kid Caminiti back in...our forward line looks more dangerous when he is in our F50 crashing packs.
Gresham is injured which opens the door for Billings.
I think we need Paton because the Crows have some very dangerous small forwards.
Membrey or Sharman (unlucky) may end up as the sub if King or Caminiti come in.

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
We need King fit when he does play.
Previosly he has slow starts...Ben is the same.
He seems to suffer from lack of confidence...maybe not moreso than anyone who has had a major injury...but no vfl to regain confidence means 2 weeks, at least, of very average play.
Im baffled he wont get a vfl return...especially with his history of returning very poorly.

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
Normally after a win the selectors tend to prefer to stick with a winning team.
But in this instance I believe they should take the view that the team actually played really poorly which would have resulted in a heavy loss against almost every other team bar North Melbourne and West Coast, probably even Hawthorn...
To me the main issue next Sunday is: how is St Kilda going to contain the dominance of Jordan Dawson and Izak Rankine?
My preferred changes for this game:
Out: Paton, Byrnes, Membrey and Sharman
In: Webster, Windhager, King and Caminiti
I see the combination of the two tall key forwards King and Caminiti as identical to Hawkins/Cameron, McKay/Curnow and need to play together to develop into a potent attack to contend for a top 4 finish.
And as I've said elsewhere today, I believe the club has erred in not naming Marcus Windhager in the best 22, he is a midfield bull, fierce tackler and in the 2nd half last year proved he can be an excellent 'tagger'.

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
Brynes was arguably our best yesterday - and to half time was , then faded a little. What message does that send - well done you have done exactly what we have asked for from you in the selflessness, at times of your role. You have played consistent footy and been in our bets players multiple times this year but your name is not as big as the rep of others who are as arguably unproven so we are sending you off to Sandy. please.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Mon 08 May 2023 4:32pm Normally after a win the selectors tend to prefer to stick with a winning team.

King for Sharman - last in first out theory.
Caminiti hasn't earned an auto recall and i think Webster has to wait until Paton no longer deserves a spot.
What i like this year so far is performance and need, and not name or popularity has determined selection.

Even the Filth got reamed by the maggots the previous weekend. They always get intimidated by Adelaide crowds (Crows or Port). Mind you, we could definitely say the same thing about them in front of Perth crowds. All part in parcel in having a big home advantage

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
Adelaide have been playing good football and should be higher up the ladder. Poor goal kicking has hurt them .
So if they kick straight they'll win easily.
The way we've been effective in scoring has been worked out by opposition Coaches .
If things go our way we may be a chance but as a Saints fan , I've no confidence.

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
Have they been that impressive?
Lost to Geelong and were never in the game
Gave up the points to Collingwood at home
Were challenged by Hawthorn and fell over the line
Big wins against Carlton and Freo at home
Trounced by Richmond at home
Lost to GWS too
Only credible win was against Port when they were playing poorly.
Reckon we’re in with a decent shot here

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
It a tough call and about getting the balance right. Last week they looked to have lost a little of that determination & fight.
In: King (if fit), Caminiti, Billings (sub) Webster

Geez feel for Bytel
Kid had 39 in twos week ago …has done his but surely needs a game?
I’d keep him in Billing’s needs to do more in 2s
Windhager the other is like to get in ahead of him to help the midfield
“Yeah….nah””

I'm not sure that Membrey gets dropped. It's a statement if he does and I don't think he'll get back in the team any time soon with King and The Hammer both available. Interesting times ahead for Ross and match committee. Crouch can come along for the flight and go and visit his rellies
If RoMa is not right Campbell comes in. If Gresh is not right Billings gets a game. Paton stays in to be a lockdown defender on Rankine or Rachele or Dawson. Same reason I have Windy in the team (he needs to tag their most prolific mid in Laird)
And if Crouch has been forgiven for not being a team player, then how a bout Sebby has a rest and spends some quality time with his family in Melbourne

Caminiti Membrey Phillipou
Gresham Clark Butler Billings
SUB: Sharman

If Gresham injured replaced by Windhager
If Marshall injured replaced by Campbell

# Sharman was decent against North and doesn't deserve to lose his place, however it was clear that the Selectors preferred Caminiti over Sharman in the first 5 rounds and I'm guessing he has done a massive block of work in the past 3 weeks so he may come straight back in.
# Sinclair has to play down back as he is the best re-bounder and we could not afford a combo of Paton/ Webster/ Stocker who whilst good defenders don't provide huge run.
# Does anyone have Cody in the mix?
# Billings comes back in after two solid runs at Sandy, he is easily a best 18 player in the squad.

I've been determined to pick Adelaide this week for my fooytips as I've felt Adelaide will be too strong at home ...but I can't as deep down when it came to the crunch I think the saints will win after basically having last week off and will be fresh and fired up. Love to see King and Caminiti come in to fire up the forward line. Defence will look after itself.

Re: Adelaide Preview Thread.
I don’t buy the ‘Dont change a winning team’
For starters, each game is mutually exclusive
Also, rarely in a win, does every player play well, or beat their opponent.
Thought last week
Howard, Membrey, Ross - were poor (all have credits)
Phillipou, Paton, Gresham, Wood - were average
In the wings, you’ve got
Webster, King, Billings, Windhager
All proven at the level

Add to this the players now seem to be over thinking and /or feeling the pressure of expectation a bit more resulting in them caught in 2 minds and then not executing well.
This feels like the big loss we have to have before resetting
