Just as an example of the calibre of leaders at Freo during Ross Lyons time there, he had All Australian talent in every line and one of the best was his midfielder David Mundy.

When Ross walked into Freo he inherited other leaders apart from Mundy in McPharlin, Sandilands, Johnson, McPhee, and Pavlich

I was thinking the other day what Freo is lacking this year compared to last and why they look different. Was Longmuir (edit..bloody auto correct) a better coach last year? Of course he wasn't. He just had better leadership and he had David Mundy at his disposal

I know Hoges helped keep the rust off those bolts, but you don't credit Paul Hogan for the finished product that is the famous coathanger in Sydney

GT is to the side that Lyon inherited in 2007 as Tait, Freeman and Bradfield were for the design and build of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

GT helped mould the men and leaders that Lyon inherited and the dynamic of 'team' that GT created during his period as coach should not be forgotten. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence understands the engineer and architect deserves credit

I've never suggested that GT was a better coach than Ross. I don't think anyone has. What I dislike is people who think it just takes a tactical coach to bring success to a club.

If Allistair Clarkson can't get North into finals does that erode any flags he won or any reputation he had? If Ross Lyon can't get the 2023/4/5 team into finals, does that make him a poor coach?

You're one of the very few twats that keep bringing it back to that. A successful team first and foremost needs talent and secondly needs leaders that unite the playing group.

You're one of the very few ungrateful supporters who don't acknowledge that GT helped mould a great team while he was coach. He helped mould the leaders.

Good recruiting is what it's all about. That should be the constant - the coach is just the variable.
The Bont and Petracca ... now, they would have made a big difference for us.

A coach makes a 5% difference, maybe ... recruiting and luck with injury is the 95%.

One thing to note, though:
RL has a gruelling game plan that failed at Freo (his last 4 years there), but it so happens to be working for us right now, as we have a number of endurance athletes who can carry it out.
It's actually been a good fit - for right now.

But, if we keep recruiting good players who are also endurance athletes from now on - based on the demands of his game plan - he might well end up becoming our most successful coach, who knows? We might be able to sustain our success? It still comes back to good recruiting.

I'll break it down/summarise it for you .... at the risk of repeating myself (you can call it spamming, but at least you've responded to what I've been saying/hypothesising - you're the first to do that ... so, thanks).

Our list went 8-3 last year ... it's not a bad list. Who said it was shite?

I don't think RL has a plan B, but his inflexible and very demanding plan A is working really well with our current list, so that's fine. And it may continue to work with the right recruiting (with endurance in mind), going forward?

Why is this a bad thing?
His game plan might deliver sustained and sustainable success, with the right recruiting.
If we recruit according to the demanding game plan ... which is a constant, we should be right. It should help focus our recruiting, and simplify it ... there'd be less room for error and recruiting willy-nilly. There'd be purpose to our recruiting.
