Our fwd set up long term
What do people think our best fwd line up will be once king and camaniti become available?.
Can all of king membrey and camaniti all line up in the same team?.
Do u drop butler and just have gresham and higgins as your smalls., along with owens and phillipou / billings .
Higgins king gresham
Owens camaniti phillipou/ billings

Re: Our fwd set up long term
The comments of the Coach were spot on - so what the Coach referred to as delivering a loss will be the subject of review
The object being to improve, which includes at the selection table (where the continuing absence of Coffield from our defence hurts)
Then you get to our attack - and personnel
For various reasons we could not get back to back goals and take the lead when a lead was required
This meant that Port Adelaide could defend - which they did with numbers back exposing our lack of height in attack
And when Marshall did push forward their defensive numbers around him told
So do we go with 3 small forwards, Butler for pressure (and the occasional goal kicking game), Higgins who can also mark and leads the goal kicking and Gresham who can rotate thru the midfield
Given the above, if you go with 2 who misses out?
Brutal isn’t it - but that is the competition
Then you get to King, Caminiti and Membrey (who is just 188cm)
Plus Billings, Owens and Phillipou who can all cover the ground, the latter 2 who will graduate to first choice centre square
We have the cattle on our List
It is just a matter of structure - and who
It is a pity Sandringham is not playing today (the AFL continue not to assist us)
But 9 days now (off 5 which may have told) then a not negotiable win versus North Melbourne, no doubt fired up with players on notice
Selection will be interesting because it will reflect the review both team and individual

Re: Our fwd set up long term
Imo your so called smalls / quick agile players need to be able to also be marking targets as well .so apart from gresham and higgins who play purely as crumbing fwds the rest are at the very least be able to compete in the air .makes us less predictable and harder to match up on ,and if opposition teams want to double team king/ camaniti then we have other dangerous marking options.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Sat 29 Apr 2023 9:00am Tall is and marking capable

2 talls 2 mediums and 3 smalls.
King, Caminiti, Membrey, Owens, Gresham, Higgins and Butler.
I don’t mind Phillipou spending some time at Sandringham developing his game.
No place for Cordy.
Billings no longer best 23.
Hill and Wood on wings.
Byrnes getting better.

I like King and Caminiti as the tall targets, Membrey as the hybrid type..maybe need a fit Billings for his foot skills.
Butler & Higgins with Gresham starting mid…Owens alternating between forward and mid with Hill going to the wing opposite Wood.
Byrnes has been ok but a fair gap still between his best and worst games!

What I like about that structure is it has plenty of contested crash pack but also speed/pressure when ball hits the deck
Eventually Owens goes midfield drift forward
I think Butler/Membrey in trouble

Re: Our fwd set up long term
Build it around King CHF and Caminiti FF.
Around them whatever works out of: Higgins, Gresham, Butler, Billings, Membrey, Phillipou.
Owens goes straight to midfield in a big role. This may threaten some of our established mids, but so be it. He is already good enough.

Certainly Membrey may struggle. I like Butler's speed and tackling, as long as he can keep going at a goal+ a game.Teflon wrote: ↑Sat 29 Apr 2023 10:49amYepGhost Like wrote: ↑Sat 29 Apr 2023 10:07am Long term = 2nd half of this season...

Was it T74 who remarked about King & Membrey's lack of pressure being a internal query? I remarked that I believed Membrey's pressure was good, watching last night I can see how it may be a concern.
Agree that Owens will split his time midfield & forward. Phillipou also but probably after another pre season or two. Exciting times when those two become key mids.

Re: Our fwd set up long term
Not often you get a considered Port fan view but this guy was good on BF and lots agreed with him…
My turn for a question.
Wtf has happened to Membrey? Used to be my favourite non Port player. He used to move a lot like Jay Schulz. My favorite modern Port player. Strong, almost reckless attack on the footy, strong hands and accurate kick. Basic FF stuff but so good to watch when guys aren't stuffing basic skills and are reliable goal kickers. Seeing Membrey hit the footy, stick the mark, and kick a nice straight drop punt was exciting to me.
In recent seasons I've noticed he no longer attacks the footy, or takes pack marks. Rather than running and jumping at it and anything in his way, he does this weird thing where he runs to the drop of the ball, stops, and does a straight vertical jump, almost trying to take an uncontested mark when he's got a few guys around him, making it very easy for them to spoil. It's one of the strangest things I've seen and I can't believe it wasn't coached out of him the second it started happening.

Re: Our fwd set up long term
Aside from players we went back to old habits bombing late
We’ve been really good at lowering eyes into 50
Is there a risk when King is back we just look for that easy bomb..

Yes, I reckon coaches have to prepare extensively for King's return. Bomb it to King should only be the very last option, still got to lower the eyes and look for the best target.
Will take some work to get it right.

Re: Our fwd set up long term
On reflection we did not seem to run as hard for as long, getting caught in that no-man's land and when we turn it over Port were able to pinpoint free players.
We cannot afford poor F50 entries at anytime, least of which when we are not running hard back to defend. Port ran with us when we went forward, we seemed to shy away from running harder in numbers, tailing off into that no-man's land.

Let’s face it midfield needs an injection of difference
As our “bull” shut down Crouch we struggle (Steele still off pace imo)
I think when Coffiekd is right we must free Sincs to middle and if possible give Owens bursts in there too
Have to mix it up way to same same

Re: Our fwd set up long term
I think play him CHF and leading up. He’s likely to drag a couple of opponents up with him, so there should be plenty of space out the back. Plus he’s a better kick from longer range.
Don’t want to see us going back to long bombs to King ever. It’s not the percentage play

Return to bombing would be a backwards step
As Lyon often says…players bend to our game plan..King no different

Re: Our fwd set up long term
From a centre bounce with 6/6/6 is one thing - and needs to be capitalised on by a centre clearance
But as I contributed previously, the problem last night was that we could not kick multiple goals so could not hit the front
This gave Port Adelaide the luxury of defending by pushing numbers back and denying space to lead into
Hence we kicked long and to contests - we not having height and the Port Adelaide players dropping back taking easy defensive marks (which we saw)
I think and trust that in due course the combination of King, Caminiti and Membrey may work because they compliment each other
King is skilled but not a pack cruncher - ditto Membrey who at 188 needs a like match up
Caminiti, whilst under 90KG’s does hit the packs - is ultra competitive and loves the contest So he may not get the possessions of the others but he brings the ground support into the equation
As someone mentioned, King and Membrey are going to have to buy into the running game
King is an athlete and will deliver what is required (including higher up the ground in support of Marshall?)
Membrey not so much so work to be done
I also think Owens and Phillipou will graduate to centre square responsibilities sooner rather than later
So who does that put pressure on
Then you have Coffield releasing Sinclair to a mid field role
The future will be interesting with all of Sinclair, Windhager, Byrnes, Bytel, Owens and Phillipou putting their hands up for midfield roles
And Hill, Woods and Billings running the wings
Then as Heath provides support for Marshall - which will also come
Plus the other kids developing in the VFL - and some big kids at that
Plus we will continue to recruit and Draft
Sandringham may start winning games!!
In terms of experience (so think Port Adelaide starting with Dixon) our older brigade is Hill, Ross and others in their later 20’s such as Wood, Crouch, Membrey etc

The forgotten man Jack Hayes was seen to be that Bulli king forward / second ruck, although I think he is still a way off playing but this is a “ in the future” topic
