War chest
So HS reports we have a war chest - makes sense in that made a play for De Goey which failed and then didn't use that money anywhere else.
On top of that will have money off the books at years end of Jones (either gone or reduced salary as always injured) and maybe McKenzie which are of any notable amounts.
IF this is the case what type of player should we be looking at? Not specific names initially but type.
Likely holes to replace in the next couple years:
Hill, Ross,
To me needs to be no older than 26, younger the better - remember TAS coming in will most likely see a repeat of the GWS and GC draft monopolies.
KPP forward would be ideal who can also pinch hit in ruck
Outside runner with speed and good ball use or 2.
Retention of key players

Re: War chest
Jack CRISP is a free agent, but I cant see him leaving Collingwood. Darcy Parish is also a free agent so maybe of interest. Ben McKay is another who we have apparently been talking to for some time.

Re: War chest
Would rather we keep hitting the draft HARD than spending money on guys from other clubs.
Unless they are a free agent and a really, really good one then no.

Re: War chest
We need mids that are the powerhouse types that turn up to play every week win or lose. The type who if they have a game where they get 20 odd touches, it feels like a poorer return.
In no particular, I would go after:
Serong
Brayshaw
Walsh
Taranto was the guy but he’s off the table for good.
Lesser contenders for the role are Rozee and Anderson who are less dominant but still very very good.
Alongside that, you pbly want another key position gem that gives you that degree of flexibility and Ben King is the clear choice for it…
Could sit at CHF and push up the ground, or sit at CHB giving us some flexibility with Battle and play the relief ruck role.
If I could only have one… Serong is where I’d fall

Re: War chest
That would be an incredible get that would blow the morale of GC.
Throw Ben King in the mix while you are at it.

I don’t get the term ‘War Chest’
You must spend 95% of the cap
Obviously can’t exceed the cap
Doesn’t make sense

Re: War chest
I think there is a clause where clubs can bank 10% from one year to be used in another. Given the current cap for clubs is 14.7 million, thats nearly 1.5 million carried over, thats a significant spend. Basically allows the club to front load a big contract or two. Even if they are paying 95% thats $735000 free cap to spend each year.

Re: War chest
Maybe just more journo bull shite. I don't believe we need much. Already we will have trouble fitting King, Hayes, Billings, Jones and a couple of others in the side.
Bytel and Highmore are too good to be playing VFL and we have 3 very good and talented 18 year olds on the injured list. Don't forget our young ruckmen/forwards in Max Heath and Isaac Keeler.
Webster and Cofffield are nearly fit also. I already mentioned king, but don't know how Caminiti gets back in.
No, stick to the draft I say. This years batch is exceptional.
I suppose they are good problems for RTB to have.

Re: War chest
More importantly was the comment re Tasmania
As soon as the AFL announces a Tasmanian team they will decide on the draft gifts that will be given to them.
The draft will be severely compromised for a few years.
Those will be the years where you DON'T want to be going to the draft.
The players left available at your pick will not be the same quality as those from earlier and later drafts.

Re: War chest
Did I hear on the wireless today that the Federal Government have also agreed to committing funds for the new ground. I think it was said the Tassie team may get going sooner than first predicted - the first two years to be played at Bellerive Oval then at the new stadium when it’s completed. I wasn’t concentrating enough so can’t recall the years ????? 2027?????ace wrote: ↑Wed 26 Apr 2023 7:38pm More importantly was the comment re Tasmania

Re: War chest
And is the model an uneven number of teams?
Or will there be another applicant for a License?
Further compromising the Draft
Mind you the “go home” factor in play in NSW and Queensland will not be in play for the 19th and 20th Licenses because Tasmania and the 20th Licence will be from “football States” so with their own nursery thru under age competitions from where players are now Drafted

Re: War chest
I think it’s averaged over a number of years, so you can exceed on individual years if you’re under on others.

Based on population team 20 would have to come from Perth (W.A.)Killa wrote: ↑Wed 26 Apr 2023 8:40pm And is the model an uneven number of teams?

The decision for a team 20 would probably be decided by the TV network rights contract.
Whatever TV wants TV will get.
That is why the AFL has never even considered reducing the number of teams.

So Cordy isn’t getting $800k a year? That’s a relief.older saint wrote: ↑Wed 26 Apr 2023 2:45pm So HS reports we have a war chest - makes sense in that made a play for De Goey which failed and then didn't use that money anywhere else.

Re: War chest
I would suggest that any applicant from SA would have the inside running - for a raft of reasons and noting the Gather Round and where that was and is to be held
WA has the time difference it has meaning games starting at 7.30PM WA time are starting at 10.30PM Australian Eastern time so finishing after midnight
SA has a half hour difference
Then who has the financial where all to support an application for any 20th Licence
No doubt there will be applicants

Re: War chest
The first reason I can see them going for a third SA team, would be to try and have them cover the NT as well, along with the rest of the northern parts of SA. 1 game a year in Darwin, 1 in Alice, 1 somewhere like Port Augusta or Port Pirie.

Re: War chest
That’s only for a few games when daylight saving is on in Eastern States. (Mid or late March - April depending when Easter is) For the rest of the season it’s a 2 hour time difference (1 1/2 hours for SA).
Though, agreed, it’s a late night for the sparrows, not the owls

Flight prices to Tassie will sky rocket. More. Geelong can take the ferry over but. No good will come of it. Even with a final 9.

No, Canberra. More people there than in the whole of Tasmania with a fair % the offspring of Victorians transported there by the Commonwealth Public Service.ace wrote: ↑Wed 26 Apr 2023 8:46pmBased on population team 20 would have to come from Perth (W.A.)Killa wrote: ↑Wed 26 Apr 2023 8:40pm And is the model an uneven number of teams?

A local team would easily fill a 25 thousand seat stadium, unlike Tasmania.
