It does but the positive is we have a very good nucleus of young players now. However, we needed some of our senior players to lead the way tonight and if they played well, we would have won.

Re: Match Thread Saints v Pies Round 5 2023
There are some absolute flogs on this site. The cynical sarcasm of a couple of posters is pathetic. I’m not exactly sure what they get out of their negativity but it gives me the total shyts !
Honestly, if you’ve got nothing constructive to say, then spare us the BS!
In regards to the game; it was a good hit out to see where we are at. Clearly there are areas that we need to improve on but I think the club will learn a lot from this loss. We’re not that far away. I believe the future looks bright.

I listened to the game from o/s on the ABC. Is "Curly" Malthouse's secret ID?!
I know a lot of posters on here have no time for him but for mine he's St Kilda tragic through to the bone.

Ross will make sure (hopefully)
That an honourable loss is not good enough
Can never be happy losing - low expectations are the hallmark of mediocrity!
Analyse - and improve
As Ross says
Either be a loser or a learner!

As much as it hurts, a loss is better for the longer term.

Re: Match Thread Saints v Pies Round 5 2023
Not crushed - the end result was not embarrassing - lots of things were iffy but even the leadership of Steel would have made the difference. Lot's of lessons for the players, lots of info for the coaches. Still sitting number 1 on the ladder after 5 rounds. Never would have expected that before the start of the season.

Re: Match Thread Saints v Pies Round 5 2023
Skill level differences showed in 2-3 quarter
Pies were cleaner for most of it
Daicos was ok but really how many from kick outs and run to receive handball?? I don’t think he was the difference
Marshall ruck work gave nil advantage….I said before game I would’ve played him and Campbell abd rested Marshall forward to stretch them …
Defence just superb - Wilkie (AA must) and Battle were rocks
Lots to like/learn from
Yes Pies missed De Goey , ruck and McStay
But no King, Steele or Membrey …think we missed more
Structure held up under pressure that I felt kept us in the game when pies had all the play….
We’ll be back
I don’t fear them

I reckon he might throw him forward next time, Owens actually won the last hit outThe_Dud wrote: ↑Sun 16 Apr 2023 8:32pmI reckon Ross had given the game away by then so was just keeping Marshall safe on the bench. He was having a laugh when we kicked that last goal, probably like “Wtf has this been??”saintbob wrote: ↑Sun 16 Apr 2023 8:27pmI actually thought it was a smart play, until I realised Marshall was on the bench and not deep forward

It’s a pisstake.
The goal Ginnivan got at the start of the last was due to umpires cheating.
Stocker cleared the ball Hill then swung and threw him to the ground leaving us a player down.
Clear free.

Re: Match Thread Saints v Pies Round 5 2023
Could easily have stolen the game, could have busted it open in the 16 - 9 minutes to go period but squandered some easy opportunities, then just proved who the fitter team was in the last few minutes.
I think we have to take some credibility away from this game, we don't give up and we are hard to beat, a little scrappy at times, but the improvements will come with experience as a group and when our Captain returns.
Carlton will be shitting their pants.

Four frees in a half 6 to three quarter time.
Nuetral venue
We are a good side
Scores close
How ?
It’s bias and it cost us a win.

I struggled with that as well, but just maybe RL wanted to keep a few cards up his sleeve for later in the year

Re: Match Thread Saints v Pies Round 5 2023
Answer how?
The obvious free to Windy ignored goal Collingwood
The run down of Pendles the non push in the back to Owens 15 out directly in front.
Ball hitting back of the post apparently

I didn't hear Malhouse's comments but I have no doubt the Pies had the rub of the green from the umps.
Not so much as the decisions in their favour but the frees so often overlooked to the Saints.
Even little things like a short pass to the Saints in the forward 50 which would have given a 30 metre shot at goal in the first quarter called play on, yet so many shorter distance marks paid to the Pies all day.
Lots of other decisions or non-decisions against the Saints but I thought that set the tone.

Re: Match Thread Saints v Pies Round 5 2023
gotta be good enough
to win by enough
that we beat them as well
(if , it is a conspiracy/bias against us)
this mob under ross might just be capable of that standard
but there's where we gotta aim
faaassrk em all .. basically ... obviously ... successfully
i think we can do that
tick.

Remember 10 of his recorded possessions were from kick-ins from our points scored.
On that basis Crouch had more possessions than him.

the skunks were really good with their hands and used a lot of slapping the ball.... something to look at.
