I just hate booing
So Saturday Ben Long (not a great player but wore the RWB with pride) gets booed because he left the club (irrelevant why)
Why boo? It’s just completely classless, and don’t come up at me “well I’ve paid my money” or “its all in the theatre”
I remember years ago in Sydney (my seats were amongst swans supporters) , Schneider was playing for StK and this guy just booed him relentlessly
I said mate he won a premiership medal for you, he should be revered, and he didn’t leave of his own accord he got cut.
As Saints supporters let’s be better than that. Let’s thank our former players for their contribution to our club , it doesn’t matter why he left
Ben was never our best player (until his last game) but he put in and I wish him well at the Suns

Re: I just hate booing
Can’t say I noticed it to be honest.
On a seperate direction… I’ve watched with interest the last few weeks as the crowd has cheered for Saints as they get introduced in the board.
Mostly no particular responses to 3/4 of the list
Some increase in applause for Pou, Caminat, Owens, Woods and Wilkie
Steele and Sinclair are popular
The money however goes to Higgins… consistently pops and tops the charts

Same theme, different club - Isaac Smith playing for Geelong against Hawthorn got booed every time he touched the ball by Hawks fans. What the actual? Which of the 3 premierships he helped deliver to your club weren't you happy with? Be classy. I have never booed an ex-Saint, not even Ross when he went to Freo, never will.

Noticed it too, unfortunately there's always that dim-witted supporter element that does things like booing players who've left (even if it wasn't their choice), as well as other things like screaming "BAALLLL" on every single tackle their team makes.
All posters are equal, but some posters are more equal than others.

Re: I just hate booing
Booing former players just not my scene. Never entered my head to do so. But booing dirty players like that dropkick Tigers full forward, I might consider if the right circumstances prevail. Maggots are an entirely different matter and are fair game AFAIC.
Never once screamed out ball. What the f*** is that all about.

I think there's a boo, and there's a 'boo', if you know what I mean.theoracle wrote: ↑Wed 12 Apr 2023 2:42pm Same theme, different club - Isaac Smith playing for Geelong against Hawthorn got booed every time he touched the ball by Hawks fans. A good-natured boo is a different beast.
But I suppose it can be a slippery slide, and that slide takes well to lubrication with VB and a nasty scoreboard.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Re: I just hate booing
Depends on the circumstances.
If they request a trade, go with a free agency trade, or generally leave on bad terms - yeah you boo the s*** outta them. If we trade him out for a pick because he doesn't fit in the team, you can't boo that.
Some good examples to consider - boo or no boo?
Barry Hall
Spida Everitt
Luke Ball
Nick Dal Santo
Jamie Cripps
Ben McEvoy
Tom Lynch
Josh Bruce
Feel free to rate in order of "boo strength".

Re: I just hate booing
I remember well sitting in my old seat (between aisles 18-19 level one) for a game between the Saints and Essenbum. This was during the period following the Peptides scandal when they were prevented from playing most of their 1st choice squad. Jimmy Gwilt was playing for the bummers (after having been delisted by the Saints) a bloke sat behind me, booed Gwilt at every occasion he could. I tried to ignore this ballbag for as long as I could, then had to say to him, exactly what I thought of him booing somebody who not only gave good service to the Saints, but left the club because of OUR decision to sack him! He attempted to give a half-hearted (and I believe one he didn't believe HIMSELF) "justification" along the lines of Gwilt being a "traitor"................. I almost urinated myself, before telling him to "pull his stupid head in"

You don't have to use the AFL euphemism colleague, feel free to call it the "drugs scandal"!!thejiggingsaint wrote: ↑Wed 12 Apr 2023 4:47pm I remember well sitting in my old seat (between aisles 18-19 level one) for a game between the Saints and Essenbum. While not something I’m into, I get booing Bazza or players who left for bigger bucks for a bit of fun (not relentlessly) but booing Gwilty etc is just ridiculous.

Re: I just hate booing
Without running the numbers across the AFL, I'd reckon each team would have at least six or seven players on their list that have played for other clubs.
We have 10 (Jones, Crouch, Hill, Steele, Stocker, Butler, Howard, Cordy, Higgins, and Campbell).
Hard to think that booing anyone leaving for better opportunities is ever OK.
Imagine that happened in the real world.
Collingwood seem to the be worst at it, yet have 10 players from other teams...

Never booed in my life. It is moronic.
But saying that, the Ben Long boos were minimal and had no real conviction

Re: I just hate booing
The only players that I understand the booing were Luke Ball and Jamie Cripps.
That is because of the way that they went about it.
They wanted to be traded out and refused to talk to any other club other than their chosen one giving the Saints no options.
Cripps was particularly galling as he said he just wanted to return home to WA because of home sickness but then refused to talk to Freo, blow it out your arse Cripps.

Re: I just hate booing
Oh what fun…
I’ll give this a go
Hall forever
That is all. He was such a douche
I would accept Spider for a year or so. I actually struggled a bit with BJ as well the year or two after he left. The heart and soul players are the toughest one to get over.
Ball was a murkier circumstance
Cripps I get as well as we were stooged from the way he went about it but to be honest… I never really cared about him.

Re: I just hate booing
I remember being stumped twice when “supporters” booed, watching on as a neutral supporter.
- Drew Petrie when he got unceremoniously delisted, but West Coast threw him a lifeline last minute, yet still the North Nuffies booed him.
- Travis Cloke when he was essentially discarded during a season by Collingwood, jumps across to WB as they gave him an opportunity, but the pies Nuffies booed him too.
Can’t stand it.

I didn't even realise he was playing for them last Saturday. I didn't hear any boo's for Longy but did with some umpiring decisions, lol.

Re: I just hate booing
Yes, it was embarrassing to hear some numpties in Saints colours boo Benny.
I confess, I have booed a few former players, like Hall, Everitt and Goddard because it was kinda heartbreaking to lose them, particularly to opposition clubs I can’t stand. Having said that, Barry Hall is one of the biggest pieces of excrement to play game, so I have no regrets booing him haha
But at the end of the day, I think the booing of Adam Goodes into retirement may have put me off booing for life. That was just so ugly
