Re: Ok experts how do we beat the pies
Windy torched Lachie Neale last year, got lots of possies while Neale was well down, 16 maybe, unlike his usual 30+
But that was Ratts.
Maybe Windy gets the freedom to chase his own ball rather than shadow Daicos.
Our coaches have been busy cooking something for the game; it must be hard creating a game plan but keeping it simple.
Pies know we go via boundary.
I would get Byrnes to run with De Goey.
Windy to be at clearances.
The Hammer to go to Darcy Moore- our guy is very strong and agile.
Need someone on Jamie Elliott- Sinclair to get the job as he will keep him quiet while getting his own ball

A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

Re: Ok experts how do we beat the pies
It may be a bit cliche but I think it’s a case playing our natural game and backing ourselves to beat them.
Collingwood are all about fast ball movement and we’re about controlling tempo/stifling movement.
One of those styles will absorb the other. Either Collingwood cut through us or they get jammed up, unable to move the ball and our height gives us the advantage.
Pbly ultimately doesn’t matter too much as if we’re the real deal and this becomes a September preview… chances are our team will be very very different.

Re: Ok experts how do we beat the pies
We didn't seem to bother shutting down the Suns midfield (who are as good or better than many in the comp), they racked up the possessions as usual but we neutralized their ability to do anything with those possessions through some pretty unrelenting pressure so I'd suggest we're going to aim to do something similar. Force the pies to adapt to us rather than us adapt to them.

Throw a bunga bunga party in Colonwoods hotel all day Saturday . Make sure the paps are there for plenty of happy snaps . Watch social media go ballistic.
Enjoy the PR nightmare for Gil as he puts a positive spin on it . Then hopes it throws them off their game .
Of course that could be just normal pre-game routine for half their side

Re: Ok experts how do we beat the pies
I don't think we will beat the pies. Expect their seasoned defence to be too much for our young forwards and smart enough to counter Higgins and Butler. Pendlebury is virtually impossible to stop. We should win hit outs though.
While expecting to lose I also think that will be ok for the long run and give the younger stars experience against a hard, well coached, skillful, finals hardened side. Help the coaches with IP as well.
We will beat them the next time with JS and MK in the side.

Win contested ball and take risks.

Collingwood's strength is that they back themselves to win the contested ball and put themselves at risk if they don't win it. We need to be ready to take advantage of the situation when it arises, and not worry too much about them when they play risky footy.

Will Collingwood still be without their rucks?

Re: Ok experts how do we beat the pies
Win at the source. Collingwood like to get numbers around the ball and run forward in waves. Brisbane did a good job of wining contests which they were out numbered on the outside and move the ball forward. Our push forward at all costs with contested ball (ala Richmond like of 2017) is likely to help .
IF Collingwood with the contested ball then we will have issues as they run in waves better than any in the league.
Premierships not won in April so I expect us to play our style and see how it stands up to one of the top 4 teams in the league. Huge upside here in that if it works then big confidence tick (result aside) know the personnel in front of the ball will get better, as will the overall system the more we play.
If gets found out provides great feedback to the coaches and the group of what adjustments will be needed and then plenty of time to make them.
While like all supporters we will be focused on the result to me it is a no lose opportunity to test the system and take on board what comes of it.

Re: Ok experts how do we beat the pies
Exactly win the ball on the ground and come forward to defend the ball at the release point. Will mean we probably get extras around the ball, so we dont allow for that 10-15 metre handball and over lap run. Team defence in the back 80 metres so they have to pick there way through it like the past 4 teams couldnt.Otiman wrote: ↑Tue 11 Apr 2023 11:17am Win contested ball and take risks.

Slow down their movement from the back half
Windhager to Daicos
Ross run with DeGoey
Someone strong overhead to Elliott

Re: Ok experts how do we beat the pies
Well...we've tried kicking the same score.
That doesnt work.
We tried kicking fewer goals.
That doesnt work.
I declare we shall win if we kick more goals!
...waiting for a call from RTB for more tips.

Re: Ok experts how do we beat the pies
I'd imagine they'll probably play the same way they have in the first 4 rounds and back the "system" in.
I can't imagine any hard tags being used especially with Nick because you'd be a man short because Nick doesn't win his own ball and racks up his numbers from teammates trying to get the ball in his hands because he's a beautiful user of the ball. A tagger would be wasted on Nick and it robs you of some ball use the other way, I suspect it will be the Lyon signature of team defence against Nick.
Whatever the Lyon method is how we beat the Pies, can't imagine he's changing too much to suit one opponent.

Re: Ok experts how do we beat the pies
Just making their defence accountable will go a long way to slowing them down.
We are the bringers of pressure so I Imagine the sling shot and scores from turnover will win the game.
We are every chance of wining by maintaining the running and pressure we have delivered all year.
Collingwood don't like being made accountable and like to spread early and the hold a line formation like we do when moving the ball from half back.
It's going to be a hard fought slog.
