Rob Harvey had a coming out party against Melbourne at the G in late '89. Winmar played FF and was awesome. Even Ben Ingleton played well that day.

It was before I was born, but Big Carl's debut must be the best.

Mitchito is a gun. Who was the last undersized Sainter to hold down a key forward post? I know the answer, have to go back to the 60's. Would be amazing if Owens ends up anything close to the Doc
Yeah, it was. Carl and I are the same age and I was in the saints rooms before and after the game as well as grabbing some party pies at half time with all the other guests. Ian Drake, one to never show much emotion, was like a cat on a hot tin roof. We beat the Dees and Carl wasn't the only player, playing his first game. Ian Stewart was another and a ruck/forward whose name I forget, Jim someone, kicked 4 goals.

2023 looks a bit like 1963. :D :D

The thing I liked about Saturdays game was it was far from perfect. That's what has been encouraging about all the kids , they are doing allot of nice things similar to the encouraging signs I saw when Roo Lenny Bj Ball Dal Kosi ...etc.. came on the scene in early 2000s

Jim Wallis maybe?

I think Bob Murray also debuted.

Yeah, thanks mate. It was Jim Wallis. He was a ruckman from Quambatook and another Sainter whose career was cut short by a knee injury.

Bob Murray was a Sandringham boy recruited as a forward who became one of our greatest fullbacks. At just a tad over 6 foot, he wouldn't make the grade as a key defender these days. Back flanker maybe.

4 really good footballers.

Don't know about his 11th game, specifically, but Brad Hardie did poll 22 votes in his first 22 games in 1985 to win the Brownlow in his debut year!
Granted, he was 22yo when he came over from WA.

Indeed.

And even before, the '61 and '63 seasons, for instance, must have been exciting. Making the four. Winning all those games. Huge crowds at the Junction, frequently 35K +. Fantastic players, including Carl of course. And the away games up at Brunswick St., Fitzroy across from the Newry Hotel. I can only imagine! Punt Road. I had a Mobil Postcard of Carl as a kid. He looked unrecognizable as the fashions had changed so quickly between the early-mid 60s to the early '70s by the time I could understand what it is.

Rod Owen kicked 3 goals 1 in his first game in 1983.

It was in 87 that he really got going with 39 goals and started the first three games of 87 with 3, 3 and then 5 goals.

Peter Everitt had a pretty good first season. He kicked 3 goals 4 in only his second game.
In game 8 he had 30 disposals, 2 goals and 18 hit outs.

Plugga kicked 5 goals 4 in game 10 in 1983

In season 2, he ripped it up with 77 goals in 1984. The first 7 games (his 13-19th games) of 84 he kicked 36 goals!
So great game by Owens yes. But to get passed Plugga he will need to back it up a lot over the rest of the season.

Best StKilda debuts that I have been at, and both by older players, were Dean Greig and Milan Faletic with his 5 goals 5.

Big Carl was amazing in his first game at the Junction oval round 1 1963 against Melbourne. But 3 other debutantes also made spectacular debuts that day - Bob Murray (4 goals), Jim Wallis and a shy youngster from Tasmania called Ian Stewart.
I came away from the game singing Carl's praises like everyone else but predicted that I had seen a future Brownlow medalist in Stewart who was super impressive. I don't think there has ever been a day before or since where 4 debutants were judged by most as the 4 best players on the ground.

Was a kid back then, but I remember Big Carl being a bit of a game changer as a mobile tough young ruckman. He stood out as a big blond guy who played it hard, and a lot of young kids like me started following the Saints with more interest. Our young players are playing exciting footy, and I think young kids now will be watching the Saints more than they used to.

Brodie Atkinson in his first game as a 20 year old had 25 disposals and 2 Brownlow votes. He was dropped after his 2nd game and never played for the Saints again.

Never heard of him.

A quick check on the web later - the dude won a McGarey Medal in SA!

Eventually got an Adelaide Guernsey as a 27 yr old, played 5 games, gone again.

And Melbourne clobbered us on the return bout.

It was Bob Murray who kicked 4 goals, playing full forward. See my earlier post about the day 4 players made their debut and were probably judged our 4 best players.
The other three were Carl Ditterich, Jim Wallis and Ian Stewart. I t was a memorable day I will never forget.

Kicked 5 goals in his third match though. I knew he kicked a bag early in 1963.

" St Kilda Football Club pauses to remember former player Jim Wallis, who passed away late last month aged 80.
By Russell Holmesby on Jun 2, 2022, 4:38pm

Jim Wallis was part of a four player debut day which was probably St Kilda’s greatest ever influx of talent in one match.

Jim passed away on May 27 at the age of 80.

He began with the Saints in Round 1 1963 alongside Carl Ditterich, Bob Murray and Ian Stewart. Those three would each go on to win club best and fairests in glittering careers, with Stewart earning three Brownlow Medals.

Statistically Jim Wallis’s career would only amount to 39 games due to a knee injury which stopped him in his tracks early in his third season. He would undoubtedly have become a 10 year player, but sadly the treatment of knee injuries in those times was nowhere near advanced as what it is today. Around that time St Kilda had a particularly bad run with career ending knee injuries. Ross Oakley, Jim Guyatt, Bill Stephenson and Ray Cross were all denied long careers. A few years earlier, the 1957 Brownlow Medallist Brian Gleeson suffered a similar fate that forced him out at the age of just 22.
Jim Wallis played 39 games for St Kilda between 1963-1965.

Jim Wallis was a 193 cm and 89 kg ruckman whose safe, one grab marking had parallels to that of Tim Membrey today.

Jim was described by one reporter as being an “accurate though wobbly left foot kick”. Yet despite the awkward style he booted five goals in his third game and had another five goal haul later in the season.

In another parallel to Tim Membrey, Jim would often be stationed in defence in tight last quarters where his reading of the play and intercept marking would provide a steadying influence."
