Re: Can anyone make sense of what we have become?
Yes, it's early and I am not getting ahead of myself (50-year+ St K fans never do) but to date, it's 3 things for me:
1) The entire coaching group: it's not just Lyon, it's Lyon-Harvey-Hayes-Enright-Goddard - those guys are talking, you are listening (the directive is, apparently, do NOT forget to bring your notebook to team meetings, you MUST listen to and take careful note of what we want you to do or you do not play)
2) The list: what various media quarters were describing 5 weeks ago as a 'mess' of a list (Damian Barrett, Kane Cornes), unbalanced, one-paced, lacking A grade talent turns out not to be that bad after all - guys in form, confident, who understand their role (Brad Hill plays like he knows exactly what he's doing, because he does, has become the player we thought we were getting) - they are showing why we were the last team to beat Geelong last year. The list ain't that bad, and I never thought it was.
3) The unexpected 'finds': this time last year we didn't have Phillipou, Caminiti and Stocker. We did have Wood, Higgins, Owens, Ross, Hill and NWM - they have all either found something under this coaching group or brought something to the team that wasn't there before. You usually only 'find' one maybe two unexpected gold nuggets each season - guys you didn't expect it from (Wood), guys you've been waiting for (Hill) or new guys that just come in and impress (Hammer) - so far, all of these guys are bringing it.
Don't know how long this will last, but I am loving it.

Re: Can anyone make sense of what we have become?
I think most of saw and stated that players last year (and previously) were not giving what is referred to as 110% and often discussed the poor development of new players, both kids and pick-ups. Also we complained about players skill improvement looked pretty much non-existent - and it wasn't until we traded or gave away players that we saw how they had developed at other clubs. So with the new regime I am not shocked but pleasantly surprised just how much we have previously been 'ripped off'. RL and his coaching panel are doing the job we have always hoped for, and credence to them big time.

I reckon you're rightVortex wrote: ↑Sun 09 Apr 2023 7:43amLennylegs wrote: ↑Sun 09 Apr 2023 1:55am I can totally make sense of what's happening. We've been under sold and now we've got some people in charge who are bringing out our best.
This list is completely capable of doing things and we don't have anyone making excuses for us. I really do mean that last part. We're now a team who won't moan and complain about draft picks, lack of talent, McCartin before Petracca, blah blah blah
So glad we're back at a point as a football club where we're no longer willing to sit back and make excuses for ourselves.
Appreciate Vortex as a poster, but I reckon we all should be wary of those misery merchant Sainter supporters amongst us. There is absolutely every reason to believe.
We have no excuse not to be successful. We have everything at hand. Don't let the Vortexes of the world lead you otherwise. They're a huge reason why this club has been mostly left behind.

I would be extremely surprised if that were true. He hasn't seen a third of the list play yet.Teflon wrote: ↑Mon 10 Apr 2023 12:00amRoss said he’s nervous before most afl games cause it’s aflSaintPav wrote: ↑Sun 09 Apr 2023 8:27pm It is a long season and while I’m still extremely wary, I think expectations have now changed given the unearthed talent, Owens in particular.
Ross said he was very anxious before the game on Sat. It doesn’t sound like he’s a coach running experiments.
Not a prediction, but I’d be very disappointed if we couldn’t manage to win half our games from here which should see us making the 8.
He’s on record several times saying this year is an exploratory year
He knows exactly where this list isn’t at yet

plus one.Scollop wrote: ↑Mon 10 Apr 2023 1:04amLet's say we make top 8 this year...
Obviously the expectation is that we should go 1 better and make top 4 in the next two years afterwards right?
Hopefully Ross doesn't make the same mistakes again. Do not import the next Brett Peake or Dean Polo.
And...please, please please no 30 year olds... no matter how good they MAY have been with their former club

Re: Can anyone make sense of what we have become?
We are not top 4 ready - nowhere near it
Yes we’ve played some good footy but let’s keep it real
The list does have holes and lacks in star power - only the blind 1 eyed wouldn’t admit to that
We have also beaten sides who imo are clearly under done - Freo look woeful and Dogs just starting to wake up
Reserve judgement to Rd 15 on …
This team was 8-3 last year so we do the dead cat bounce better than most…
I’m not interested in fools Gold I’m after sustainable success
Take another deep Long drink from the draft we’ll this year (meant to be hood draft too) and we set ourselves up for it
Don’t care if we don’t make 8
