Round 2 only 8 disposals but not sure if he had a specific role to play. I remember him centering the ball into the corridor and hitting someone on the chest which was great. They should persist with him for the whole year. He has good speed. He's a midfielder and can play the small forward role like Gresham (and I prefer this flexibility instead of having too many specialist forward pockets in the same team).

I think Higgins role should come under the spotlight, mainly because we are 1 tall down and there's not enough crumbing opportunities for him, so he tends to try and take 1 on 1 marks in the goal square thinking he's 2m tall.
Totally agree. I believe with Gresham playing mostly forward having 3 small forwards is one too many. Higgins is irrelevant without King, he offers little forward pressure, can't take an over head mark and is a poor set shot on goal. Plus he sooks it up when he doesnt get the easy over the top hand balls running into goals. So for me he is the one who goes out to have an extra rotation through the midfield. Start Windhager forward and rotate him with Bytel and tell them to tackle to hurt, Essendon hate the physical stuff.

I'm wondering if Higgins is playing more of a defensive role due to the injury crisis and being asked to be one of those players that works up the ground to help create that wall and defend the middle of the ground. Certainly from watching the replay he's up around that part of the ground a lot. His tackling is up and he got a mention from Ross's presser today so you'd think that means Ross is happy with his game. The fact Gresh has kicked 2 goals in both games probably means he's taken Higgins normal offensive role.

strange times while in an injury crisis maybe.

Lyon and his coaching team are nothing if not consistent. They haven’t changed their minds re Windhager vs Bytel or Webster vs Paton.

I would susoect Paton will be the emergency again.

IMO this is as good a lineup as we can field ATM.

Paton out: interesting.

Gresham CHF again. Serves him right for not signing on. Keep it up and could be named CHB next week.

Jimmy Webster is in...

Emergencies are
Paton
Sharman
Bytel
Tom Campbell

Cooper got 12 touches up on the Gold Coast last wk, in an 82-pt loss.

While Highmore got 32 touches...

I think Highmore just got a lot of possessions as the ball was continually pumped into the GC forward half. I would have hated to be a forward at Sandy last week- the Sandy team looked like a country mob against an almost senior quality AFL team..Sharman was lucky to get 12 touches. I presume Webster got the nod over Paton due to being physically harder and stronger?

It’s a real mystery why Highmore isn’t listed an emergency in a super performing back 6 that saw Webster come back in and Paton return to the sub spot…
I mean there’s only 8 players listed already that can play defence + Paton as an emergency and heck even Coops the other emergency has played there too. Head scratcher

In an 82 point hiding defenders are going to see more of the ball than your forwards.
Very low quality game - not sure we can take much away from it tbh.

I don’t know that Paton is competing with Webster. Even coming in he played a bit more up the ground then where Webster would.

In rd1 Windhager come on for Webster who missed last week
Paton essentially came in to cover Bytel with Ben replacing Byrnes mid game.

Assuming Paton is listed as an emergency… it’s essentially Bytel and Windy who he is competing with it looks like

Injectors have Kaine Baldwin as an emergency.
Do they pull the trigger on Baldwin, seeing how the last Baldwin is before the courts in the US 🙆‍♂️🤠

I sense a tactical sub at half time if Paton is the emergency. He should be a lock for our defensive 6 (7) in my opinion.

Is that really surprising in an 82 point loss that an intercepting backman gets a lot of possessions while a marking forward does not?

I have not seen the game at all, but but the wriite up the ball will have been in our defensive (Highmore ) half a lot, and not so much in the forward (Sharman) half.

Now Highmore is stiff at present as he is too good for VFL level, but has a lot of players above him.

Sharman is trying to crack into our forward half, BUT he is not a key forward. He is more your "third -tall", and for "third tall" Lyon and assistants have gone for both of Phillipou and Owens who are both going well.

Key forward roles are being filled by Caminiti and Cordy. PLus Cordy is doing the 2nd ruck roll which Sharman cannot do.

So unless the coaches decide to play only two small forwards and not three (Gresh, Butler and Higgins), Sharman is unlikely get a look in.
