Re: Changes Rnd 3
I believe they will give Jimmy another weeks rest, a perferated ear drum and broken hand are both significant injuries. If Stringer plays I think Wilkie or Stocker can manage him and Langford.
I would look to use both Bytel & Windhager to fill Jacks role and adding one of the small forwards as the sub. Games are won and lost through the midfield and the Essendon mids all had solid games last week. As a group they actually covered more distance than we did, so our advantage of being able to out run/work the opposition will be nullified.

Good point, Webster could come in to HBF and Stocker and Windy into mids (one of them the Sub)

Webster listed as 1-2 weeks, Bytel TBC.
IF both out and not available - Windy in for Steele and sub ??? i see Peris was listed as an emergency last week?

Re: Changes Rnd 3
Butler gets a goal.
Stringer doesn't.
Higgins gets a good bounce when he has his opponent done.
Those would be nice changes.

After going to training this morning it appears Windhager, Webster and Bytel are all available for selection.

Re: Changes Rnd 3
Fascinating at the selection table this week, not so much with regards as to how Steely is covered, Windy obviously comes in off the sub and you'd think Bytel comes in as the sub possibly and these two are the inside cover for Steely.
Webster is the interesting one, does he replace Paton or Byrnes who had an stinker.
The bombers midfield could be a challenge for us so Paton might be considered more versatile than Jimmy if they want some more players to run through the midfield so it won't surprise me if Jimmy get's another week on the sidelines but hard to leave him out if he's good to go.

Speaking from my experience as a Sports Psychologist (non-existent) I am wary after Spud’s game last year. I hope there are no long emotional speeches by club legends before this one.
We cannot afford to run out flat footed.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

I don't know what occurred last year in the lead-up, but if the club was silly enough to expose the squad to MH issues, that's disgraceful.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Wed 29 Mar 2023 10:36am Speaking from my experience as a Sports Psychologist (non-existent) I am wary after Spud’s game last year. Need to keep their spirits up, upbeat, positive.
Don't overload them with MH which can be upsetting.
Don't let them listen to MH speeches

Re: Changes Rnd 3
Paton's game and his flexibility should be underrated, he's part of an outstanding defensive unit and is another running defender. Likewise Burns was outstanding on his wing against Fremantle, considered BOG by some of our Saintsational colleagues. Our tight defense, running backs and wingers are where our drive is coming from. Add Wood, Wanganeen, Hill and Sinclair to that list.Vortex wrote: ↑Wed 29 Mar 2023 9:44am Fascinating at the selection table this week, not so much with regards as to how Steely is covered, Windy obviously comes in off the sub and you'd think Bytel comes in as the sub possibly and these two are the inside cover for Steely.

Re: Changes Rnd 3
Assuming Bytel is fit, it would be a concern for his career if he isn't seen as a logical replacement for Steele as an inside mid.
Would like to see if he can make the grade.

I thought Paton looked like he took a step up last week- looked poised, used the ball well.Toy Saint wrote: ↑Wed 29 Mar 2023 10:00pmPaton's game and his flexibility should be underrated, he's part of an outstanding defensive unit and is another running defender. Re: Changes Rnd 3
I think we need to persist with Byrnes. He's 21, played 30 games and will form part of the next generation of youth. Rd1 he had 27 disposals. Round 2 only 8 disposals but not sure if he had a specific role to play. I remember him centering the ball into the corridor and hitting someone on the chest which was great. They should persist with him for the whole year. He has good speed. He's a midfielder and can play the small forward role like Gresham (and I prefer this flexibility instead of having too many specialist forward pockets in the same team).
I think Higgins role should come under the spotlight, mainly because we are 1 tall down and there's not enough crumbing opportunities for him, so he tends to try and take 1 on 1 marks in the goal square thinking he's 2m tall.

Re: Changes Rnd 3
I'm still maintaining my view that I'm not sure Bytel is going to make it. There's a huge gap for him to make up if he's to become capable of consistently delivering to Steely's level and on that point he's starting from a fair way back and doesn't have much more time to prove he's a keeper. He needs to play every game like it's a grand final.
Same Byrnes, he's put a target on his back that Lyon won't take his eyes off now, meaning he played an absolute ripper one week and then an absolute shocker the next. Unless he's got an injury excuse then he's broken Lyon's number one cardinal non negotiable rule.

He had 580m in R1
He had 70m R2
Lyon won't persist with that type of inconsistency.

Re: Changes Rnd 3
According to a trusted friend, he was sore, got through the week and couldn't turn it on, Ross and Bytel more than took care of business and Paton staked a claim to be moved to the bench.bakes wrote: ↑Thu 30 Mar 2023 8:33am I think we need to persist with Byrnes. I believe the reference to contributing meant he was able to run, but avoided the strains of contested possession.
I'll go out on a limb, that a good system, has provision for when a player is having a bad day and just got through the week, and he can contribute to the team structure but play a different role, occupying and controlling space.
Watching him do this, from level 2, like a junk yard dog, the week before, was exciting. A rest won't kill him, but I think he already had it. We will see.

Yeah I heard the sore excuse too, absolutely rested during last weeks game for sure so he's cherry ripe and no excuses then this week huh.CQ SAINT wrote: ↑Thu 30 Mar 2023 11:36amAccording to a trusted friend, he was sore, got through the week and couldn't turn it on, Ross and Bytel more than took care of business and Paton staked a claim to be moved to the bench.bakes wrote: ↑Thu 30 Mar 2023 8:33am I think we need to persist with Byrnes. While Im speculateing on Ross mentiin of Byrnes in his presser, I didn't see any excuses, just heard his impact was low but he contributed.
How do you think he will go, no idea or just not a fan?

Re: Changes Rnd 3
Haven't got a clue how he'll go because I had him on my list of delists before R1, (harsh I know but someone has to be on it), and then I was pleasantly surprised with his R1 performance, which I'm guessing absolutely now one saw coming except say his Mum, Yorkeys and Firey. It was such an uncharacteristic performance I got me thinking could he have been touched with Ross's magic wand and I was really happy for the fella, also made me think maybe magic really does happen.CQ SAINT wrote: ↑Thu 30 Mar 2023 1:22pmI can't excuse his performance, that is the coaches' job, they are the one scripting the roles.Vortex wrote: ↑Thu 30 Mar 2023 1:06pmYeah I heard the sore excuse too, absolutely rested during last weeks game for sure so he's cherry ripe and no excuses then this week huh.CQ SAINT wrote: ↑Thu 30 Mar 2023 11:36amAccording to a trusted friend, he was sore, got through the week and couldn't turn it on, Ross and Bytel more than took care of business and Paton staked a claim to be moved to the bench.bakes wrote: ↑Thu 30 Mar 2023 8:33am I think we need to persist with Byrnes. Then R2 happened, and for his sake I really hope he did have an injury excuse because one thing is for sure if he wasn't injured, then you can almost guarantee Ross stamped his papers early for breaking his one and only non negotiable.
He has limited tricks, in fact he has one, he is runner, his kicking is okish but not totally reliable, looks great when he pulls the trigger on the spectacular and it works, so if your one wood is running on the outside and you don't win too much of your own ball I'm guessing you wanna transcend your inner Forrest Gump every bloody week if you want to keep Ross happy.
He's on my pet project watch list on Saturday night.
